Abstract

The aims of this research are to analyze the utterances which is containing implicatures used in a movie entitled The House With A Clock in Its Walls (2018) and its functions. In this research, the researcher try to analyze types of implicaturesused in The House with A Clock in Its Walls (2018). Then, in the second problem statement, the researcher analyze the functions of implicatures that found in the movie entitled The House with A Clock in Its Walls (2018). This research is categorized as qualitative research. As the result, the researcher concludes that the types of implicatures and the functions are founded in the movie entitled The House with A Clock in Its Walls (2018). The result shows that there are four types of implicatures. They are generalized conversational implicature, scalar implicature, particularized conversational implicature, and conventional implicature. There are also some functions of implicatures found in doing this research. They areassertives, directives, commissives, and expressives.

Abstract

This study aims to find the difference of components of meaning on lexemes that mean ‘look’ in English. Through semantics study, the analysis employs Nida’s componential analysis of meaning to figure out the distinguished features among lexemes. This is a qualitative research which includes the step of data collection by looking in the lexemes which have meaning “look” form four dictionaries. The data analysis includes filtering the lexemes from dictionaries and analyzing the components of meaning in each lexeme by adding semantic notations to semantic features in each lexeme. The result shows that there are fifteen lexemes which have meaning “look” in English, namely “see, look, watch, stare, gaze, glance, glare, glimpse, gape, behold, peer, peep, peek, blink and wink.” The differences in components of meaning are determined by several semantic features such as the device of seeing (whether using direct eyes or not), the way of seeing, the object and the involved feeling through the process of seeing.

Abstract

This article presents the research result of teaching-learning in the lecture of Poetry Analysis towards the students of English Literature at Faculty of Language and Literature in Universitas Sains Al-Qur’an (UNSIQ). This article aims at analyzing grammatical mistakes in the Poetry Analysis class by taking the students’ final paper as the samples of main data. This study uses qualitative methodology. The collected data steps are identifying, classifying and selecting the main data which contain of grammatical mistakes. The analyzing data techniques are exposing and explaining the selected data. The theories applied in this study are related to some sources about correct and incorrect structures and arrangement of sentences in English. The results of this study show that some of the students made mistakes in arranging sentences especially in English parts of speech such as pronoun, noun and verb.

Abstract

Posters played an important role in the legislative campaign in Wonosobo district 2019. Legislative candidates tried to influence voters by creating posters that contain interesting photos and writings. This is what encourage researcher to conduct research on the functions of languages ​​that exist in the poster. The researcher used qualitative research. Data were collected through observation. The result is that there are two types of language in the poster. The first is the language that gives information and the second is language that informs and influences voters to do something.

Abstract

This article presents the study result of womanism reflected in digital poetry. This study applies qualitative research methodology. In collecting the data, the researcher compiled the digital poems related to the issue of womanism and attempted to collect the poems by searching on internet. The methods of analyzing are displaying the identified poems, explaining the displayed poems and interpreting the explained poems with womanism theory. The findings of the study show that womanism is reflected in many ways based on the expression written in the digital poems. Womanism revealed in the digital poems is the forms of confronting marginalization towards woman, promoting appreciation towards woman in domestic relationship and male-womanist voice.

Abstract

Politeness has an important role in javanesse society. The norm of politeness stands in the highest level of javanesse society. There are many unwritten norms which people apply it in their daily life, especially in a conversation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe and explain the use of politeness in javanesse daily conversation and understanding the politeness used in relation with the background culture and situation when the conversation happened. It can be found in this study that javanesse politeness use indirect speech, especially when people accept an offer. In relation with Leech’s maxim, Javanesse people tend to use the maxim of modesty. In this case they will minimize the prise to self, especially whan they are talking about what they have and what they do.

Abstract

Voluntary Program is one of the excellencies program in English department of Pancasakti University Tegal that brings international volunteers to join the teaching learning process and achieve the goals of the program. This study aims at figuring out the needs of students in developing the materials of cross cultural understanding. It was conducted at the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training Pancasakti University in the even semester of the academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected from a questionnaire, classroom observation, and focus group discussions. The results of this study present the students’ perceptions on the teaching and learning process of cross cultural understanding classes attended, the problems encountered and its alternative solutions, and the materials of cross cultural understanding needed in the classes in order to increase students’ intercultural competence. To conclude, this program is sufficiently beneficial for increasing students’ motivation in learning English and to have intercultural competence by learning the cross cultural understanding.

Abstract

This study aims at analysing the emergence of Javanese’s belief and attitudes in the existence of gembel children among the residence of Dieng Plateau Area. This study focuses on two villages to be observed, Dieng Village (Eastern Dieng) that belongs to Wonosobo Regency and Dieng Kulon Village that belongs to Banjarnegara Regency. The researcher conducts in-depth interview, observation and also documentation toward the stake holders (residents, traditional leader, gembel children). The result is that the existence of them (gembel children) are very important to the residents, they also have the great attitudes toward them (gembel children). Some believes also emerge among the residents of these two villages as a result of their existence (gembel children).

Abstract

Many factors can affect the way people communicate. One of them is gender. Compared to the men, women tend to use many language variations. Understanding the language variation used by women is important, so that its language function. In this research, the writers analyze the women's language features used by female characters in "Hidden Figures" movie script written by A. Schroeder and T. Melfi together with its functions. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The research’s results show that female characters in “Hidden Figures” movie use 28% lexical hedges (28 expressions), 2% tag question (2 expressions), 4% rising intonation on declaratives (4 expressions), 3% empty adjective (3 expressions), 36% intensifiers (35 expression), 1% hypercorrect grammar (1 expression), 17% superpolite forms (17 expressions), 4% avoidance of strong swear word (4 expressions), and 5% emphatic stress (5 expressions). Intensifier features is the most dominant in women language features realized in “Hidden Figures” movie script. Whereas the function of the language used by women here are referential functions, emotive functions and conative functions.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze rivalrous thinking and its effect towards athletes’ behaviors in Janus Metz’s Borg vs McEnroe (2017). Researcher uses the qualitative descriptive design to examine the problem. The theory applied in this thesis is Adler’s individual psychology and rivalry approaches. The data collected from movie’s English subtitle by reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting relevant data. The results of the study are; first,the rivalrous thinking is raised by the rivals who involve in the rivalry and also the goal which becomes the object that those rivals are fighting over. Second, the rivalrous thinking affects the behaviors of Borg and McEnroe, then it comes to the conclusion in what type of personality they have.
