Abstract

Communication involves strategy of information exchange. There are many strategies. In this paper, it will be discussed types of strategy used by speaker and hearer in order to exchange information in Bird Box . Theory used as basics for analyzing data is speech act. Data were collected by observation. The steps were watching movie and reading the scripts, identifying the data, and classifying the data. Researcher also applies the procedure to analyze data; displaying, selecting, explaining, interpreting data and making conclusion. The results show that there are four strategies of information exchange that used by the main character when they do communication: direct speech act provoked by direct speech act, indirect speech act provoked by direct speech act, direct speech act provoked by indirect speech act, and indirect speech act provoked by indirect speech act.

Abstract

The objectives of this study as it is mentioned in the problem statements is to analyze (1) the chaotic conception of good and evil presented in Game of Thrones (TV series), and (2) the conception of good and evil constructed in Game of Thrones. The method used in this research is qualitative approach. The object of this study is several episodes of Game of Thrones from season one to season eight. In collecting data, the techniques applied by the researcher are listening, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The data analysis method is done by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. As a primary theory for the analysis, the researcher uses study of ethics by Peter Singer and Yaneer Bar-yam’s chaotic concepts. The results of the analysis shows that (1) the series presents chaotic conceptions of good and evil through the complex development of characters in Game of Thrones. (2) the series shows the construction of good and evil conception through four particular issues and cultural systems found in Game of Thrones, which are; how the culture enforce the law, the justice system, slavery, and trial by combat.

Abstract

This article presents the discourse markers used in speech. It applies qualitative research methodology while analyzes the discourse markers using discourse markers approach. Our aims are to analyze the types of discourse markers based on Biber’s theory and to analyze the functions of discourse markers based on Schiffrin’s theory that found in the speech entitled “We All Are Perfectly Imperfect” (2017). The result shows that there are ten types of discourse markers, five of which are linking adverbials, answer forms, stance adverbials, answer elicitors, and interjections. The linking adverbials dominates the types of discourse markers used by Muniba Mazari in her speech, while interjection is the least-used type. Furthermore, six discourse marker’s functions are found in this speech. Three of them are Marker of Connectives, Marker of Information and Management, Marker of Response. The most distribution of discourse markers’ function is marker of connectives and the fewest is marker of temporal adverb.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) the symptoms of schizophrenia in Jeff Nichols’s “Take Shelter” (2) the psychological condition of Curtis as schizophrenic reflected in Jeff Nichols’s “Take Shelter”.The study uses descriptive qualitative method to analyzed the film entitle “Take Shelter” directed by Jeff Nichols as the objective of the research. The method of collecting data includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The method of analyzing the data by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The data analyzed by using Abnormal psychology and Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis.The result of the study : (1) the symptoms of schizophrenia reflected in Jeff Nichols’s Take Shelter such as hallucination, delusion, disorganized behaviour, and several negative symptoms; (2) the psychological condition of Curtis as schizophrenic in form of feeling anxious due to the hallucination and delusion, disorganized behaviour, and stress and analyzed by using Sigmund Freud psychoanalysis.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze the process of personality changing of Jess in Ficarra's Focus (2015) movie. There are two problem statements that the researcher used in this research. (1) How is the personality of Jess reflected in Ficarra’s Focus?. (2) How is the process of personality changing of Jess in Ficarra’s Focus ?. The researcher uses qualitative method in this research. The data source is the movie of Ficcara’s FOCUS (2015) and the source of data is the script of movie.The method of collecting data in this research includes reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The method of analysing the data are done by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The theory and approach that the researcher used is the psychology of literature based on Alfred Adler Theory. As a result of this research, first Jess has a smart calmness and obedient personality, she also learns from the mistakes. Second, the process of personality changing is based on Alfred Adler individual theory. Jess changes to become superior and knows the purpose in her life.

Abstract

In literary works, the use of beautiful language is used by the author as efforts to enrich the impression, and expand the imagination of the readers. Sometimes, readers often encounter difficulties in understanding the meaning of those unliteral words. One of the keys to understanding the meaning of words is to understand figurative language. Knowing figurative language especially similes can make us able to understand the implicit or explicit meaning of literary works. In this study, the writers analyze the simile used in Bronte’s Jane Eyre. This qualitative study focuses on the simile type human, treats, and feelings as formulated by Reimer (2018). Reading the novel and labeling the data is the method of data collection then describing the data based on its semantic meaning is the method of data analysis. The research's results show that there are 29 utterances belong to similes type human treats, people, and feelings.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze fairy tales symbols presented in Sharon Maguire Godmothered movie (2020) and the semiotic analyzes of fairy tales symbols in Godmothered movie (2020). There are two problem statements that the researcher used in this research, first, what are the fairy tales symbols presented in Godmothered movie (2020)? Second, how are the fairy tales symbols revealed in Godmothered movie (2020)? The researcher used the qualitative method to examine the problem. The theory and approaches that the researcher used is Semiotic. This study also includes the procedures of collecting data and procedure of analyzing data. The result of this study, first, the fairy tales symbols shown through someone actions and dialogue, second, the meaning of the fairy tales signs can be analyzed by using triadic concept of Pierce’s semiotic theory. The type of symbols are more than one, depend on the symbols category type.

Abstract

This research discusses the language style used by the main character in Just Mercy movie (2019). The aims of this research are to explain the types of language style in Just Mercy movie (2019) and to explain the social factors which influence the main character use the language style. The researcher applied language style theory by Joos. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data are taken from the utterances of the main character in Just Mercy movie (2019). In collecting data, the techniques applied by the researcher are watching, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The data analysis method is done by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The result shows that the researcher has found all types of language style. The most dominant language style that used by the main characters is casual style. Holmes’ theory of social factors is also used in this research. The result shows that the factors participant, setting, topic, and function influence the use of language style.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) the schizophrenia of main character in Jeff Baena’s “Horse Girl” (2) the mental condition of Sarah as schizophrenic reflected in Jeff Baena’s “Horse Girl”. The study uses descriptive qualitative method to analyzed the film entitled “Horse Girl” directed by Jeff Baena’s as the objective of the research. The method of collecting data includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The method of analyzing the data by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The data analyzed by using Eugene Bleuler theory of schizophrenia and Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis. The result of the study : (1) the schizophrenia of main character reflected in Jeff Baena’s Horse Girl such as primary symptoms of schizophrenia in the form of association and ambivalence and secondary symptoms in the form of hallucination and delusions; (2) the mental condition of Sarah as schizophrenic in form of feeling generalized anxiety disorder due to the delusion, stress and mood disorder and analyzed by using Sigmund Freud psychoanalysis.

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) the type of delusion reflected in the main character reflected in Charlie Kaufman in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”, (2) the psychological condition of Jake as delusion’s sufferer reflected in Charlie Kaufman in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”. The study uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film entitled “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” directed by Charlie Kaufman as the objective research. The collecting data of the research method includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The analyzing data of the research method by used displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The researcher analyzes the data by using Abnormal Psychology and Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis. The result of the study : (1) the type of delusion reflected in the main character reflected in Charlie Kaufman in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” such as erotomanic delusion and grandiose delusion; (2) the psychological condition of Jake as delusion’s sufferer in form of feeling anxious due to hallucination, delusion, and stress by using Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis.
