Abstract

This article is aimed at describing the differences of tutoring process and the responses of tutees related to the tutors classified as peer and cross age The research underlying this article applies descriptive-qualitative method. The data were obtained from observation, document analysis and interview. The findings show that there are advantages and disadvantages of both models. Peer tutors were more familiar to the tutee. It built better communication and high motivation in the classes. Meanwhile, cross-age tutors tended to be respected by tutee that made them easier in organizing the classes. On the other hand, peer tutors looked less serious and were often ignored by tutees. Similarly, cross-age tutors faced difficulties in preserving their attittudes since they were taken as the models by their tutees.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan kedalaman variasi makna eksperiensial yang terdapat dalam penerjemahan interlingual: subtitle film Avatar dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia, (2) mendeskripsikan faktor kontekstual yang menyebabkan terjadinya variasi dari kedua subtitle tersebut, dan (3) menginterpretasi efek kontekstual dari kedalaman variasi makna eksperiensial dari kedua subtitle tersebut. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian adalah subtitle berbahasa Inggris dan terjemahannya dalam bahasa Indonesia yang diambil dari DVD film Avatar. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah semua klausa utama dalam subtitle. Variasi makna dianalisis dengan menggunakan sistem transitivitas. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa variasi secara umum antara teks bahasa sumber (Bahasa Inggris) dan teks bahasa sasaran (Bahasa Indonesia) sangat rendah dari segi keluasan makna eksperiensial. Faktor kontekstual yang menyebabkan variasi adalah konteks intertekstual dan konteks situasional. Kontekstual yang berdampak terhadap penonton bahasa target termasuk dalam aspek keterbacaan teks.Kata kunci: Makna Eksperiensial, penerjemahan, subtitle, Avatar.

Abstract

The demand for domestication and localization of children’s literature compels translators to not only translate the texts but also transadapt them. Significant problems arise when the texts have to fit the cultures and religions of the target users. This qualitative study attempts to address this issue. Gathering teachers of Taman Pendidikan Al Qur’an (TPQ) or Qur’an study club for Muslim children in the Greater Boyolali area of Indonesia, children’s literature translators, and TPQ students in a Focus Group Discussion, we investigated the strategies of transadapting fables in English into Bahasa Indonesia with Islamic values as the core teaching along with the impacts ensued. Through the FGD constructed based on the purification strategy by Klingberg (1986), translation as adaptation and selection by Gengshen (2003), children picturebook translation by Oittinen (2000), narrative connectedness by Christman (2004), proairetic decoding by Nikolajeva (2010), and skopos by Reiss and Vermeer (2014), paratextualization, insertion, and bleaching strategies are constructed. Paratextualization adds clickable religious comments on the digital versions of the fables. Insertion adds religious lessons within the text. Bleaching refines any expressions considered unfit for the target religious values. These strategies trigger an impact called drifting. To reveal the extent of faithfulness, we constructed a drifting-level assessment. This assessment enables translators to reveal whether a transadapted children’s literature is still on track, slipped, or out of track. The study finding is expected to fill up the theoretical absence of transadaptation strategies and drifting level assessment. Its practical nature also brings benefits for children’s literature translators and TPQ teachers.

Abstract

Competition between universities to gain market attention requires various strategies, including the activities of the institution's branding. University branding is obligatory to publicize their existence and values, which differ from competitors, whether in scientific values or other elements. However, sometimes stakeholders to not understand the "branding map" of the competitors surrounding campuses. This study aims to reveal the university's branding using the concept of archetypes written by Mark and Pearson. Twelve archetypes are commonly used for branding: the innocent, the explorer, the sage, the hero, the outlaw, the magician, the regular guy, the lover, the jester, the caregiver, the creator, and the ruler. The data in this research is in the form of text and pictures taken from logos, slogans, visions, and missions of 13 Islamic universities under the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The study shows that nine of the twelve archetypes appear in Islamic universities. The nine archetypes are the sage, the caregiver, the creator, the explorer, the hero, the innocent, the ruler, the regular guy, and the lover. Each Islamic University has multiple archetypes at once. Therefore, campus branding used in marketing and publication programs can use the most dominating archetypes.

Abstract

The necessity for a children’s picturebook to generate a proairetic decoding by the children influences translators to deliver the messages of the source text as explicit as possible. This condition leads the translators to implement amplifications aimed at detailing particular information. Though a proairetic reading is achieved through amplification, negative impacts follow the implementation. This qualitative experiential study involves nine children picturebook translators. Exchanging insights and translated texts in a focused group discussion (FGD) comprising of English to Indonesian and English to Javanese children picturebook translators, we found that a typology of amplification technique constructed specifically for children picturebook translation is required to provide a guideline for the translators when forced to apply amplification. The result of the translation data, supported by FGD, indicates that amplification is classifiable into three function-based types namely naturalizing, synchronizing, and stylizing amplifications. These amplifications, when applied, generate four impacts namely congruity losses, effect rendering, reading level deviation, and deviation on the purposes of the children’s picturebooks. These impacts deal with verbosity and thus requiring a further concern on verbosity level acceptance.

Abstract

Paideia philosophy urges education and anything derived or related to it to respond to the zeitgeist of an era. Thus, techniques to deliver any pedagogical materials should position the target users as the axis to disclose them more possibilities to comprehend the materials. One of the techniques is designing anthropomorphic narratives. Studies on this topic circumnavigate around educational domains. Perceiving this issue from the lens of literary adaptation is the gap left by the previous studies. We argue that narrating pedagogical materials anthropomorphically is better termed paideia adaptation. This study attempts to prove the existence of this adaptation type by utilizing qualitative method, indicating the narrative and language features of the adaptation. Implementing the theories of onto fiction by Couceiro-Bueno, ergodic literature by Aarseth, second degree of literature by Genette, anthropomorphism by Weemans and Prévost on a corpus of animated films and games, the findings indicate that paideia adaptation has four narrative features namely anthropomorphic narratives, pseudoreferentiality, metalepsis, and metafictionality. This adaptation also has distinctive language features namely thematization, proairetic decoding, and didacticization. The result discloses a new viewpoint in the study of adaptation.

Abstract

Celebrities are figures who get exposure in their lives. So when they make a mistake or something that tends not to meet the expectations of society, it will have an impact on their popularity and good name. To improve their image, celebrities use clarification to the public with a press conference. In the clarification, there are implicit aspects that are used to cover up the shortcomings of their mistakes. This research seeks to prove the use of clarification strategies in verbal aspects that play a role in supporting what celebrities say. As well as the use of bleaching, to create a religious image of celebrities to tend to cover up mistakes with visual aspects that they want to emphasize in order to create a holy impression for the viewer. This article analyzes two celebrity press conferences under the hook and qualitative research.  The findings reveal that Lexical Substitution, Elaboration of Information and Rearrangement of statement are used as a clarification strategy and bleaching through their fashion and verbal is existent. This study implies that clarification strategy and bleaching might apply on tendentious conversation not only on celebrities' clarification pers conference, but also fashion or gestures aspect that contain bleaching when required to hide a negative ambiance from them. Keywords: celebrities, clarification, utterances, bleaching, press-conference

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the implementation of inclusive class program at Islamic higher education in Surakarta, revealing supporting and constraining factors of program implementation, and describing the understanding, attitude, and efforts of the lecturers in inclusive class. This is descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were lecturers and students in inclusive class program. Data collection techniques are observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used the model developed by Miles and Hubermann (2014) consisting of data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the implementation of the inclusive class program has not been running perfectly, proven with the finding of several fundamental constraints becoming obstacles to the implementation of the program. Furthermore, several supporting factors to the program implementation were also found which could be used as the main foundation to improve the implementation. Furthermore, the understanding, attitude, and efforts of the lecturers regarding to the implementation of the inclusive class are very positive, as proven by the awareness and understanding regarding improving services for students with special needs. Several attempts were made to carry out the program properly by planning for the physical environment, teaching procedures, and learning materials using adaptive tools.
