Abstract

Bovine rumen bacteria consist of diverse microorganisms essential for processing manure, compost, and liquid organic fertilizer, enhancing soil fertility and nutrient availability while suppressing pests and pathogens. These bacteria include cellulose-digesting species such as Bacteroides succinogenes, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, and Ruminococcus albus, which produce cellulase enzymes for organic matter decomposition. Morphologically, cellulolytic bacteria are categorized into coccus forms (Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Ruminococcus albus) and rod forms (Bacteroides succinogenes and Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens), with Gram-positive and Gram-negative cell walls. This study examined the growth and morphology of bovine rumen bacteria in fermented liquid over three weeks. Colony counts increased from 4.75 × 10⁶ CFU/mL in week 1 to 2.92 × 10⁷ CFU/mL in week 2 and 6.2 × 10⁸ CFU/mL in week 3. Colony morphologies included colors (pink, yellow, blue center), sizes (small, medium, large), shapes (circular, irregular), elevations (raised, convex, unbonated), surfaces (smooth, mucoid), and edges (regular, irregular). Predominant bacterial cell shapes were bacillus, with Gram-positive staining. These findings underscore the potential of bovine rumen bacteria in organic waste fermentation and nutrient cycling.

Abstract

The usage of devices in schools, especially for academic reason, has become more widespread as technological developments have advanced. The intensity of gadget usage is generally related to students' study discipline, which in turn impacts their academic performance. MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember is one such institution that lets students to utilize technology for educational reasons. This study aims to examine the profile of gadget usage intensity, study discipline, and biology learning outcomes among Grade X MIPA students at MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember. The research adopts a quantitative approach with a descriptive quantitative research design. This study employs survey and documentation methods. The sampling technique used is non-probability sampling in the form of total sampling, with a population and sample size of 93 students. A questionnaire was utilized to gather information regarding the intensity of gadget usage and students' study discipline based on their personal experiences. Documentation was used to collect transcript data of the biology learning outcomes of Grade X MIPA students at MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember. The study employed a closed questionnaire with a Likert scale. All questionnaire items used in this study were tested and proven valid and reliable. Based on the research findings, it was discovered that the average intensity of gadget usage among Grade X MIPA students at MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember was 40, categorized as high; the average study discipline was 63, categorized as moderate; and the average learning outcomes were 39, categorized as low.

Abstract

The rapid advancements in science and technology have transformed the educational landscape, presenting new challenges and opportunities for prospective educators. This study examines the demographic profile, technological gaps, and conceptual challenges faced by Chemistry Education students of the 2024 cohort at a higher education institution, especially in Universitas Negeri Medan. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining quantitative data analysis of 198 students with qualitative insights from surveys and interviews. Results indicate significant gender disparities, with female students forming the majority (26 Males and 172 Females), and highlight deficiencies in technological proficiency and conceptual understanding among students. The study concludes with actionable strategies, including targeted technological training, curriculum reform to incorporate project-based learning, and soft skills development, aimed at equipping students to excel as innovative and effective educators.

Abstract

In the context of higher education, the digital era and advancements in technology have revolutionized learning systems, necessitating an understanding of student preferences for online, offline, and hybrid methods. This study aims to investigate these preferences and the associated reasons behind them. Data were collected through a Google Form survey administered to 110 students of chemistry department, chemistry education study program, Universitas Negeri Medan, complemented by semi-structured interviews with a subset of participants. Results reveal that 9.1% of students prefer online learning due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness, 55.5% favor offline (face-to-face) learning for its effectiveness in understanding material and fostering interaction, and 35.5% opt for a combination of both methods, which is perceived as the optimal balance. The findings underscore the importance of adapting learning methods to enhance educational effectiveness, addressing challenges such as internet access, device limitations, and transportation costs.

Abstract

The Single Tuition Fee (UKT) system at Universitas Negeri Medan (Unimed) reflects a commendable initiative to promote equitable access to higher education by tailoring tuition fees to students' economic capacities. This study examines the implementation and impact of the UKT system in 2024, with a focus on its distribution across socioeconomic groups and students' perceptions of university services. Data collection involved a Google Form survey and interviews with students from various faculties, analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The findings highlight a concentration of students in lower-income UKT brackets, aligning with the system's inclusivity goals. However, opportunities for enhancement were identified, particularly regarding transparency in the UKT allocation process and the alignment of university services with students' expectations. This study underscores the importance of refining the system to foster fairness and satisfaction while maintaining Unimed’s commitment to accessible and high-quality education for all.

Abstract

The UTBK (Computer Based Written Exam) serves as a pivotal examination for Indonesian students seeking entry to state universities. This study analyzes tryout performance conducted by Laras Bimbel to evaluate participants' readiness for UTBK 2024. Employing a quantitative methodology, data were collected through offline tryouts integrated with digital platforms. Participants' scores, time management, and error patterns were examined to assess the distribution of competencies across sub-materials, particularly mathematical reasoning and literacy. Results reveal significant variations in performance, highlighting the need for tailored preparation strategies. This research underscores the importance of innovative educational interventions to address areas of difficulty, thereby enhancing students' overall exam preparedness.

Abstract

Understanding the diverse cognitive abilities of students is essential for improving teaching strategies, particularly for pre-service biology teachers. This study examines the learning styles and multiple intelligences of second-year students enrolled in the Tadris Biology program at UIN Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember during the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years. A descriptive quantitative research design was used, with data collected through structured questionnaires assessing learning styles and multiple intelligences. The study found that the majority of students exhibited a visual learning style (52%, n=72), followed by kinesthetic (25%, n=34) and auditory learners (23%, n=32). In terms of multiple intelligences, spatial-visual (17.4%, n=24) and logical-mathematical (16.7%, n=23) intelligences were the first and second most dominant, followed by musical (13.8%, n=19) and bodily-kinesthetic (13.8%, n=19) intelligences. These results suggest that the majority of pre-service biology education students rely on visual and kinesthetic modalities for learning, while their cognitive strengths are primarily in spatial-visual and logical-mathematical intelligences. This distribution highlights the need for instructional strategies that integrate visual representations, hands-on activities, and structured problem-solving tasks to support their dominant learning preferences.
