Abstract

Abstract: English Teachers’ Identity in Pesantren: A Narrative Inquiry Study. Objective: Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) is recognized as an educational institution in Indonesia. In educational environment, Teachers have an important role for the successful in the teaching-learning process. They should construct their professionalism and identity in facing the development of education. There are numerous research studies on teacher identity. But, there is still a lack of research on teacher identity in Pesantren. Therefore, this research study aims to explore how English teachers in Pesantrnen construct their identities. Method: This research is a narrative study that involves six English teacher in Pesantren. The data were elaborated into three themes, the novice teacher, the professional learning journey to be professional teachers, and professional teachers. Finding: The examination of their construction identities revealed from the teachers’ experiences to know how teachers in Pesantren understand themselves through experiences. Conclusion: Understanding teachers’ experience will give best implications to the English teachers’ identity which in turn will contribute to construct their identity. Keywords: pesantren, english teachers, teachers’ identity.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202423

Abstract

Correlation of Vocabulary Proficiency and Learninng Styles with Reading Comprehension of Prospective English Teachers: A Case of Universitas Lampung. Objectives: To analyze the correlation of vocabulary proficiency (X1) and reading achievement (Y); second, to investigate the correlation between learning styles (X2) and reading achievement (Y); and to analyze the composite correlation between X1, X2 and Y. Methods: Simple random technique was used, 80 students were chosen, out of 120, based on the total sample, i.e., all students taking reading comprehension and vocabulary. A questionaire was used to measure  learning styles, and two sets of tests were used, to measure vocabulary and reading achievement. Findings: There was a correlation between students’ vocabulary proficiency (X1) and reading achievement (Y), r = 0.532; there was a correlation between learning styles (X2) and reading achievement (Y), r = 0.784; finally, there was a correlation between X1, X2 and Y, r = 0.823. Conclusion: Vocabulary proficiency and learning styles play important roles in improving reading achievement.Keywords: vocabulary proficiency, learning styles, comprehension.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i3.202203

Abstract

Correlation Between Self-Efficacy and Motivation of English Teachers, Towards Students’ Achievement in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Objectives: This study was a correlational study that aimed to find out the correlations among three variables namely teacher self-efficacy, teacher motivation, and students’ achievement. Methods: The teacher self-efficacy scale (TSES) and English teacher motivation scale (ETMS) were distributed to 70 English teachers of junior high schools in Yogyakarta, and students’ average scores were collected as the students’ achievement. Findings: This research showed there were a significant correlation and contribution between teacher self efficacy and teacher’s motivation to students’ achievement. Conclusion: The higher the teacher’s self-efficacy, the higher the teacher’s motivation and the better the students’ achievement. Therefore, increasing teacher self-efficacy is very crucial because it relates to many educational outcomes such as teacher motivation and students’ achievement. Keywords: teacher self-efficacy, motivation, students’ achievement DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v11.i1.202107

Abstract

Teaching Indonesian for Foreigners Online: Pre-service English teachers Constraints. Objectives: Thus, the research aimed to know the constraints of teaching Indonesian for foreigners online. Methods: The researcher employed qualitative research. The research sample was  20 pre-service teachers who taught Indonesian for foreigners in online mode. The total foreigners were about twenty.The research used semi-structured interview to gather the data. Then, to analyze the data, several stages were done namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Findings: The result showed that in the pre-activity, the teacher did not know how to master the online application. Besides, the teacher was nervous to teach foreigners because the teacher was not usual to teach foreigner with different cultural background. In main activity, the teacher found that students were bored and also lack of Indonesian skill, like grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. In the post-activity, the teacher did not know how to do online assessment for teaching indonesian. Conclusion: In short, the teachers’ constratins were existed in the teaching Indonesian for foreigners in online mode. Abstract

The Correlations among English Teachers’ TPACK, TISE, ITOE, and Teaching Implementation. Objectives: This research is correlational research that aimed to find out the correlations among Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), Technology Integration Self-Efficacy (TISE), Instructional Technology Outcome Expectation (ITOE), and Teaching Implementation. Methods: TPACK-EFL Survey and Motivation of Technology Integration in Education Scale Questionnaires were distributed to 60 students of the English language teacher professional education program at Sriwijaya University in the academic year 2018/2019. Findings: The findings of this research showed that the students have a high understanding level of TPACK, high level of TISE, high level of ITOE, and good in teaching implementation, and there are positive significant correlations among TPACK, TISE, ITOE, and teaching implementation. Conclusion: Not only the technical equipment but also the qualified teachers who understand how to advance the ICT are very needed. Abstract

English Teachers’ Perception of Higher Order Thinking Skills Viewed from Importance and Complexity. Objectives: This study aims at exploring the Vocational High School English teachers’ perception of its importance as well as its complexity of teaching HOTS. Methods: A mix-method approach of data collection and analysis was applied in this study. The data were obtained from 40 VHS teachers, the members of the English teacher association of Wonosobo regency, Central Java, Indonesia by using one set of close-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Findings: The result indicates 1) VHS English teachers have  a very high perception of the importance of teaching HOTS for their students; 2) a high perception of the complexity of applying HOTS resulted from the students’ unreadiness and teachers’ lack of competence in integrating HOT in English class. Conclusion: A very positive perception of the importance of teaching HOTS among VHS teachers. It is in constrast with the high perception of the complexity of applying HOTS.
