Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the influence of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) on culinary tourism interest in Myeongdong, Seoul, focusing on the “K-drama food pilgrimage” phenomenon and its evolution during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Methodology: A qualitative descriptive approach was applied using literature review and secondary data analysis. Data sources include academic publications, Korea Tourism Organization reports, and documented culinary tourism trends in Myeongdong. Results: Findings show that Hallyu significantly increased international tourists’ interest in Korean cuisine, particularly through media-driven food experiences. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a severe decline in culinary tourism, with an 85% drop in international visitors and a 31% increase in shop vacancies in Q3 2020, while also accelerating digital transformation and business innovation among food entrepreneurs. Conclusions: The Korean Wave plays a central role in shaping culinary tourism demand in Myeongdong and demonstrates resilience through adaptation and digitalization during crisis conditions.Limitations: This study relies on secondary data and lacks primary empirical validation from tourists or business actors, which may limit contextual depth.Contributions: This research contributes to culinary tourism literature by explaining the intersection of cultural soft power and crisis-driven digital adaptation in a global tourism destination.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines how the Kupang City Tourism Office formulated strategy to increase Local Own-Source Revenue (LO-SR) or Pendapatan Asli Daerah (PAD) during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifies the internal and external barriers encountered in that process.Methodology: A qualitative case study design was applied, combining semi-structured interviews with five key informants from the Tourism Office and Regional Revenue Office with secondary documentary data, analysed through SWOT-based IFAS and EFAS matrices. Results: Kupang City tourism was positioned in Quadrant I (IFAS = 2.31; EFAS = 1.96), indicating that an aggressive, growth-oriented (S-O) strategy is appropriate, centred on integrated destination management, certified human resource development, and cultural heritage optimisation; however, PAD contributions during the pandemic derived mainly from hotel, restaurant, and entertainment taxes rather than destination retribution. Conclusions: Strategy formulation was sound in direction but structurally disconnected from direct PAD generation, while budget constraints, human resource deficits, low community awareness, and Cyclone Seroja compounded the pandemic’s impact.Limitations: The single-city scope, small government-only informant pool, and subjective SWOT weighting restrict the generalisability of findings to other secondary cities in Eastern Indonesia.Contributions: The study extends destination-level SWOT applications in Eastern Indonesia by linking strategic positioning explicitly to fiscal outcomes, offering local governments an evidence-based framework for aligning tourism strategy formulation with revenue mobilisation objectives under crisis conditions, and for distinguishing programme activity from measurable fiscal return.

Abstract

Purpose: This study documents and analyzes the tourism potential of Sukasantai Farmstay, an agritourism enterprise located at the foot of Mount Gede in Sukamaju Village, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, that combines accommodation, organic farming, livestock management, and nature-based recreation within a sustainability-oriented farm-to-table model. The research assesses the destination across five dimensions of the tourism attraction development framework and examines its impact on the surrounding community.Methodology: A qualitative case study design was used, combining in-depth interviews with the co-owner, garden manager, kitchen staff, and four visiting guests, together with two days of direct field observation and secondary document review. Results: Sukasantai demonstrates strong potential across all five criteria, supported by diverse natural attractions, a broad activity portfolio, quality accommodation with digital detox features, authentic farm-produced goods, and multi-modal transportation access. Community impact is evidenced through fair local employment and pandemic-resilient farm sales. Conclusions: Sukasantai constitutes a well-developed agritourism destination with meaningful community and educational value.Limitations: The study relies on a single field visit and a small informant sample.Contributions: This research offers the first systematic academic documentation of Sukasantai using an established tourism attraction framework, contributing empirical insight into organic farming-based hospitality models in rural West Java.

Abstract

Purpose: This research describes the dynamics of the tourism sector in Bali Province, focusing on the factors driving tourism development, the challenges the sector faces, and the opportunities available for sustainable tourism growth. Methodology: A qualitative approach based on systematic literature review was employed, drawing on secondary data from academic articles, government reports, and news publications relevant to Bali’s tourism dynamics. Results: Cultural richness, natural beauty, and ongoing infrastructure development emerge as the primary drivers of tourism growth in Bali. Development is nevertheless constrained by environmental degradation from uncontrolled construction, over-reliance on international visitor demand that produces systemic vulnerability, and difficulty managing tourist behavior and overtourism in popular destinations. Two major opportunities are identified: sustainable tourism practices centered on environmental conservation and community empowerment, and the adoption of digital technologies for destination management, marketing, and visitor services. Conclusions: Bali’s tourism sector must balance economic growth with environmental sustainability and cultural preservation, with market diversification, sustainable governance, and digital innovation identified as priority strategies. Limitations: The study is descriptive and does not statistically test relationships among the driving factors, challenges, and opportunities identified, and proposed sustainability and digitalization measures have not been empirically validated in Bali-specific settings.Contributions: This research provides a structured analytical synthesis of Bali’s current tourism dynamics, contributing evidence-based policy insight for sustainable tourism governance in an internationally significant destination.

Abstract

Purpose: This study analyzes the cultural adaptation process of the local community in Canggu toward the presence of digital nomads based on Young Yun Kim’s Cultural Adaptation Theory. Existing studies on digital nomads have largely emphasized economic transformation, lifestyle changes, and tourism development, while the cultural adaptation experiences of local communities remain underexplored.Research Methodology: A qualitative approach was applied through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected using snowball sampling, and data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Results: The findings identify three stages of cultural adaptation. In the stress phase, the community experienced language barriers, cultural differences, environmental changes, traffic congestion, and increased living costs. In the adaptation phase, residents improved English skills, developed cross-cultural understanding, and adjusted services and economic activities to digital nomads’ needs. In the growth phase, the community gained economic opportunities, enhanced intercultural communication skills, and strengthened confidence in Balinese cultural identity. Conclusions: Digital nomad presence creates a dynamic adaptation process that generates economic opportunities while supporting the preservation of local cultural identity.Limitations: This study focuses only on the local community perspective in Canggu and does not include digital nomads’ perspectives or broader historical-cultural analysis.Contributions: This study extends cultural adaptation literature by applying Young Yun Kim’s framework to the emerging context of digital nomad tourism. It provides a local community perspective on negotiating cultural change and offers insights for sustainable destination management that balances tourism growth and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the implementation of collaborative governance in Community-Based Tourism (CBT) development in Mainland Klungkung, Bali, and formulate a collaborative governance model to support sustainable tourism development.Research Methodology: A qualitative case study was conducted in Banjar Sangging, Kamasan Village, and Banjar Tihingan, Tihingan Village. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis involving government, village authorities, Pokdarwis, community leaders, tourism businesses, academics, and creative industry practitioners. Data were analyzed using Emerson and Nabatchi’s Collaborative Governance Regime framework. Results: The findings show that collaborative governance involves multiple stakeholders through cultural preservation, destination promotion, community empowerment, tourism awareness, and capacity-building activities. However, collaboration remains fragmented due to limited coordination, institutionalization, funding, human resources, promotional capacity, and integrated tourism management. Creative industries, particularly Kamasan classical painting and Tihingan gong craftsmanship, contribute significantly to cultural preservation and local economic development but require stronger institutional and market support. Conclusions: The study proposes the Collaborative Community Tourism Governance Model (CCTGM), integrating collaborative governance, CBT, community empowerment, cultural preservation, creative industry development, and Tri Hita Karana.Limitations: The study focuses on two cultural tourism communities in Mainland Klungkung, limiting broader generalization.Contributions: This study contributes a Collaborative Community Tourism Governance Model (CCTGM) by integrating collaborative governance, community empowerment, cultural preservation, creative industries, and Tri Hita Karana for sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the current conditions and identify the development needs of adventure tourism at Lubana Sengkol Outbound, South Tangerang, based on the Attraction, Accessibility, Amenities, Ancillary Services (4A) components.Research Methodology: An exploratory qualitative approach was used. Data were collected through observation, in-depth semi-structured interviews, documentation, and a literature review involving 15 purposively selected informants, consisting of the owner, manager, outbound facilitators, marketing and reservation staff, and visitors. Data were analyzed through data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Results: The activities at Lubana Sengkol Outbound reflect five core adventure tourism dimensions: physical activity, natural environment, challenge, risk and danger, and thrill and excitement. The activity portfolio is predominantly characterized by group-based soft adventure. The Attraction component is characterized by diverse and adaptable activities that can be adjusted to participant characteristics. Development gaps remain in sanitation and shelter facilities, access to large vehicles and internal paths, directional signs, and digital reservation and promotion systems. Conclusions: Development needs include updating group activity packages, improving sanitation and shelter facilities, managing access, adding directional signs, and strengthening digital reservation systems and promotion.Limitations: This study focuses on one destination, and its qualitative design does not establish causal relationships between the 4A conditions and changes in visitor numbers.Contributions: This study provides an integrated analytical application of adventure tourism dimensions and the 4A framework by linking activity characteristics with destination conditions and development needs in a group-based, outbound setting.
