Abstract

Kaffir lime peel extract (Citrus hystrix DC.) contains flavonoids and alkaloids still rarely used as medicine; however, its toxicity is lack of the research until now. The research aimed to determine the effects of toxicity in the extracts by Brine Shrimp Lethality test (BSLT). The extraction used maceration and infusion. The former used ethanol of 70% with the thick extract of 3.81 mg and the letter used aquadest with the dried extract of 2.77 mg. The screening-was conducted by observing the color change in the extract and obtained the toxicity effects at the concentration of 1 ppm, 3 ppm, 5 ppm, 7 ppm, and 9 ppm by obtaining LC50 values for both the ethanol extract of 0.98 ppm and water extract of 1.20 ppm. The results showed that the water and ethanol extracts of kaffir lime peel had toxic properties.

Abstract

Abstract

The plants of Asteraceae family have secondary metabolite compounds, namely flavonoids, saponins, tannins, essential oils, polyphenols, and terpenoids. The research aimed to compare saponin content on stems and leaves of Asteraceae family plants using gravimetry methods. Besides, it compares saponin content using colorimetry methods based on different solvents. The research used literature review methods. The data search was done through the database using a search engine such as Google Scholar and PubMed. By gravimetry method, Vernonia amygdalina plant contained the highest saponin content of 7.92±0.46% on the leaf; on the stem, Helianthus Annuus L. plant carried the highest saponin content of 7.74±2.80%. Meanwhile, by colorimetry method, the ethyl acetate extract of Hypochaeris radicata L. plant contained the highest saponin on the leaf showing the rate of 16. 67±0.01 mg DE/100 g.

Abstract

Skin infections are one of the health problems that often occur in tropical countries which can be caused by several microorganisms such as bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi. One of the plants that can be used to treat skin infections caused by bacteria is the Chinese ketepeng leaf (Cassia alata L.), which contains antibacterial compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Chinese ketepeng (Cassia alata L.) against several bacteria that cause skin infections. Chinese ketepeng leaf simplicia was extracted by maceration method and then evaporated to obtain a thick extract. Then an antibacterial screening test was carried out, testing the value of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Kill Concentration (KBM) with variations in the concentration of each test of 0.5%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0, 8%, 1.6%, 3.2%, 6.4%, and 12.8%, and the antibacterial activity test with varying concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20% against several bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Propionibacterium acnes. Based on the results, the MIC values for Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa were 1.6%, and Propionibacterium acnes was 0.4%. The MBC value for Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Propionibacterium acnes is 3.2%, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is 6.4%. And the antibacterial activity test obtained the largest diameter of the inhibition zone at the optimum concentration of 20% on the test bacteria. Based on this research, the ethanolic extract of the leaves of the Chinese ketepeng (Cassia alata L.) has potential as an antibacterial.

Yhe purpose of this study, we wanted to find out how the use and the process and the application of traditional medicine regarding its types, morphology, and its properties in Makassar society. Furthermore, as well as to get the suitability of scientific data by community use. The research method used was a descriptive survey with a qualitative approach, a combination method of purposive sampling and snowball sampling was used in determining the sample, the data was collected by direct observation and in-depth interviews. The results of research that have been carried out obtained about 47 types of plants, the part of the plant that used often by the community is leaves. And there are also the rhizomes, bark, fruit skin, stems, fruit, tubers, seeds, and herbs. Moreover, the processing of traditional medicine was boiled, brewed, pounded, squeezed, and without processing, while the application of use is by drinking, rubbing on the affected area, smearing, patching, and consume immediately. Based on data from various literature, some medicinal plants that have been used by society have scientific evidence as to their activities. The people of Makassar city use traditional medicinal plants in the treatment of non-infectious diseases and also there is scientific evidence on some plants that supports the use of traditional medicines by society.
