Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the consumption patterns of farming households in Tongke-Tongke Village, Sinjai Regency. A quantitative approach utilizing a survey method was employed. Primary data were collected via questionnaires from 55 farmer respondents selected using Slovin's formula. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the influence of income (X1), head-of-household education (X2), number of family dependents (X3), consumer preferences (X4), commodity prices (X5), and environmental factors (X6) on consumption patterns (Y). The results indicate that, collectively, all independent variables significantly influence consumption patterns. Individually, income, family size, consumer preferences, and commodity prices exert a positive and significant influence. Conversely, the head-of-household's education and environmental factors do not show a significant influence. These findings suggest that the consumption patterns of farmers in Tongke-Tongke Village are determined more by economic factors (income, prices) and demographic factors (number of dependents) than by social factors (education) or environmental factors.

Abstract

Climate change has become a major challenge for red chili farmers, altering seasonal patterns, increasing pest and disease attacks, and affecting farm income. This study aimed to analyze farmers' perceptions of climate change, identify economic constraints, and examine adaptation strategies used to maintain farm income. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed in Tanjung Lor Village, Paiton District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java. Three red chili farmers were selected through purposive sampling as main informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive analysis model with source triangulation to ensure validity. The findings indicate that farmers perceive climate change as increasingly unpredictable seasonal and weather patterns. The main economic constraints include rising production costs, limited capital, crop failure risks, and unstable chili prices. Farmers have implemented various adaptation strategies to reduce climate-related risks and sustain farm income. These include technical measures such as adjusting planting schedules and using pest-resistant varieties, as well as economic strategies such as diversifying crops and seeking market information. The findings highlight the importance of combining technical and economic adaptation strategies to support the sustainability of red chili farming under changing climate conditions.

Abstract

This study analyzes the labor management model in a layer poultry enterprise in Kaluppang Village, Maiwa District, Enrekang Regency, focusing on labor utilization patterns, compensation systems, and factors influencing local labor participation. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through interviews, observations, and documentation involving 30 farm workers. The findings indicate that the enterprise implements a mixed labor model consisting of 70% permanent workers and 30% contract workers. The labor composition is dominated by workers from Mamasa Regency, West Sulawesi (80%), while local workers account for only 20%. The low participation of local workers is influenced by perceptions that poultry farm work is physically demanding, dirty, and less prestigious, as well as the availability of alternative livelihoods. The compensation system for permanent workers includes wages based on the number of chickens managed, rice allowances, meal allowances, and the right to manage proceeds from chicken manure sales. The study recommends improving local workers' skills and enhancing the incentive system.

Abstract

Bird's eye chili is highly perishable, making channel structure and intermediary performance crucial for maintaining distribution and value sharing among actors. This study analyzes the marketing channel of UD Sumber Tani Abadi, Mojokerto, by integrating marketing margin, farmer's share, and short-run operational feasibility. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed through a census of 90 partner farmers, one marketing intermediary, and one retailer, involving 92 participants in the observed channel. Primary data were obtained through interviews, questionnaires, observation, and business records. The identified channel was farmers → marketing intermediary → retailer → final consumers. The intermediary margin was Rp10,000/kg, farmer's share reached 73.33%, and the short-run operational R/C ratio was 1.14. These indicators demonstrate positive internal channel performance; however, they do not establish that this channel is more efficient than alternative channels, as no comparative channel was observed. Cash payment, a relatively short channel, and repeated trading relationships supported continuity, whereas price volatility and farmer dependence on a single buyer remained important risks. The findings highlight the need for market diversification, more transparent price arrangements, stronger farmer organization, and longer-period monitoring of prices and operating costs.

Abstract

Agro-industrial and livestock residues are potential organic-fertilizer feedstocks, but their composition must be screened before experimental composting. This study developed a theoretical formulation of filter aid, seaweed-processing residue, and cattle manure using a linear mixture model and mass-balance calculations based on existing laboratory characterization data. Under a screening scenario targeting an initial C/N ratio of 24 and an equal share of seaweed residue and cattle manure, the candidate proportion was 0.278:0.361:0.361 (approximately 1:1.30:1.30). The mixture was projected to contain 17.19% organic carbon, 0.85% nitrogen, a C/N ratio of 24.00, 281.71 ppm available Fe, 14,010.74 ppm total Fe, and an estimated pH of 5.76. These values fall within the screening limits used for the available parameters, but they do not demonstrate compliance of a finished organic-fertilizer product because P, K, moisture, heavy metals, maturity, and other required parameters were not evaluated. The study therefore provides a proof-of-concept formulation and identifies total Fe and raw-material variability as critical issues for subsequent composting, laboratory validation, and plant testing.

Abstract

Shallot collectors consolidate supply, handle postharvest activities, and connect farmers with markets, yet their firm-level financial performance is rarely measured. This study analyzes the operating process and financial performance of all 12 active shallot collectors in Tambaksari Hamlet, Mojokerto, using a descriptive quantitative approach supported by qualitative data and a census design. Data were obtained through observation, structured interviews, factual questionnaires, and documentation. Cost-based profitability was measured using Return on Operating Cost (ROOC), while operating efficiency was assessed using the Revenue-Cost (R/C) ratio. Activities comprised purchasing, sorting, drying or storage, packaging, and distribution. After standardizing net profit as gross revenue minus total cost, mean ROOC was 31.79% (12.21-51.41%) and mean R/C was 1.32 (1.12-1.51). ROOC showed substantial dispersion (CV 49.23%), whereas by-product income contributed only 0.99% of aggregate gross revenue. The findings support tighter stage-based cost records, better inventory handling, and systematic use of intermarket price information.
