Abstract

Everyone has their own style of language when interacting or communicating with other people. There are many variations of language styles, making people often use a mixture of two languages ​​in their communication. This in sociolinguistics is also known as Code Mixing. This incident also occurred in the YouTube video Catatan Najwa with Maudy Ayunda. The code mixing in this video is used to make it easier to convey messages to the audience. The aim of this study is to determine the kind of code-mixing using Hoffman's theory, namely intrasentential code-mixing, intralexical code mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation on the youtube video Catatan Najwa with Maudy Ayunda. A qualitative descriptive is employed in this study with content analysis as an approach. The results showed that speakers used the types of code-mixing according to the theory by Hoffman, intra-sentential code-mixing with 73% data, intra-lexical code-mixing with 22% data, and involving a change of pronunciation is 5% data.

Abstract

Novel is a form of literary work that is presented realistically and complexly. In a novel, there are two constituent elements, namely extrinsic and intrinsic elements. Extrinsic elements in the novel are support that indirectly affects the content of the novel. Meanwhile, the intrinsic elements contained in a novel include themes, characters and characterizations, plot, setting, point of view, moral value, language style. The purpose of this study is to analyze main character’s personality in Kitchen novel by Banana Yoshimoto. This research used qualitative descriptive methods to gain a deep understanding of main character’s personality in Kitchen novel by Banana Yoshimoto. The data were analyzed using personality theory stated by Sigmun Freud. From the results of data analysis, the researcher found three major system with three Id, two ego, and two superego contained in the main character’s personality.

Abstract

The main goal of this research is intended to find the differences and similarities between English and Indonesian noun phrases. The problem to study is to know the patterns of English and Indonesian Noun Phrases. However, it will be detected the similarities and differences between the two languages. The patterns of English and Indonesian Noun Phrases are analyzed by using combination English and Indonesian Noun Phrases. The data, the writer uses contrastive analysis method to determine their similarities and differences; the source of the research; understanding English grammar, vocabulary, basic English usage, introduction to linguistic; and Tata Bahasa Praktis Bahasa Indonesia and syntaxes all data collected above are analyzed by contrastive analysis. The result of the data analysis reveals that there are differences between English and Indonesian Noun Phrases; namely; adjective as modifier; possessive adjective or possessive noun as modifier; participate as modifier, noun as modifier and adverb as modifier. Meanwhile, there are three kinds of similarities that is 1) the similarities of Head-Modifier; the similarities of Modifier-Head and the similarities of Modifier-Head-Modifier, 2) the similarities element forming noun phrases, namely prepositional phrases, adverbs, numerals, noun, demonstrative adjective, indefinite adjective and non-finite clause, 3) the similarities in order of element forming noun phrases; namely the order of determiner and the order of modifier. By knowing the differences and the similarities above; it is expected that the teacher can explain the noun phrases both English and Indonesian well.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the learning styles of first semester EFL students at Unirow Tuban. The questionnaire consisted of 30 questions related to learning styles, which were categorized into three main categories: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. This study was a type of descriptive with qualitative approach. It was conducted online through Google Form questionnaire. The purpose of the current study is to identify learning style and analyze how it will influence capacity to carry out academic tasks. The participants of this research were 13 students of first semester in PGRI Ronggolawe University Tuban. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of the first semester EFL students at Unirow Tuban had a preference for visual and auditory learning styles, while a smaller proportion of students had a preference for kinesthetic learning styles. Furthermore, the study found that there were significant differences in learning styles preferences between male and female students and also because they come from different region that created diversities. Overall, the results of this study provide valuable insights into the learning styles of first semester EFL students at Unirow Tuban, which can help educators design and implement effective teaching strategies to cater to students' preferred learning styles and enhance their learning outcomes.

Abstract

In the process of learning English, students have to master vocabularies. However, the students have some problems when learning vocabularies. To cope with the students’ problems, the learning process applied game-based learning. The objective of the study entitled “The Implementation of Using Digital Games in Atarashii Smart Center” were to describe the Implementation of digital game in teaching vocabularies and to find the students’ responses toward the implementation of digital game. The subject of this study was the students in Atarashii smart center who joined English class. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. To gets the data, the researcher employed observation, questionnaire and interview. The researcher used percentage of respondents to get responses. The implementation of digital game in teaching learning process is easy to implemented, but there are some difficulties from the students. Students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary were (1) Most of student found difficulties to memorize and choose the appropriate meaning, (2) Students start to burdened when they have to memorize the vocabulary in limited time, (3) Also still confused in using vocabulary. But students’ responses still show positive results. The students enjoy and enthusiasm to use digital game in their learning process. After finding the difficulties, using digital game to learn vocabulary showed a positive effect. The result showed that learning vocabulary using digital game is better than traditional learning. From the total respondents 42% of the students strongly agree and 18% of the students agree that digital game helped the students to master vocabulary. In conclusion, Digital game clearly has the potential to lead the way into better learning outcomes for young learners, particularly in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe writing strategies applied by the fourth semester students of English language education program of PGRI Ronggolawe University Tuban in their argumentative writing. It includes 1) kinds of writing strategies applied by the students in their argumentative writing 2) the application of those kinds of strategies. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was five students who got the highest score in their previous writing subject. The researcher modified SILL questionnaires based on (Oxford, 1996) to observe their writing strategy, which covers six categorizes of strategies namely cognitive, metacognitive, memory, compensation, affective, and social strategy. The data from the questionnaire and the interview were analyzed descriptively. The result of this study indicated that all students applied all kinds of writing strategies. Compensation strategy became the most dominant strategy used by the students, followed by metacognitive strategy, memory strategy, cognitive strategy, affective strategy and social strategy. The students had different way to apply writing strategies. It depended on their condition and their needs while writing a text.
