Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the effect of vitamin C and E on kidney microstructure of mouse exposed to monosodium glutamate for 30 days. This research used complete randomized design which consisted of 6 treatments and 5 replications. The control consisted of  K-, and K+ (castor oil 0.3 ml). The treatments were MSG 4 mg/g BW, P1 (only MSG), P2 (MSG plus vitamin C 0.26 mg/g BW), P3 (MSG plus vitamin E 0.026 mg/g BW) and P4 (MSG plus vitamin C and E). After treatments were completed, the mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation, and kidney tissue section was prepared by  the paraffin method and  stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin staining. Microstructure damage of kidneys showed a significant difference between control and treatments. In P1, the proximal tubule damage was 69.95%±5 and in P4 was 47.22%±3. In summary MSG can cause damage in the form of a narrowing of the lumen of the proximal tubules of the kidney. A combination of vitamins C and E can reduce the effect of MSG on the kidney.   Keywords: kidney, Monosodium glutamat (MSG), Vit C, Vit E.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of vitamin C and E on  testicular histology of mice following exposure to monosodium glutamate (MSG) for 30 days. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 6 treatments and 5 replications was used in this experiment. Mice were treated daily by oral gavage with 4 mg MSG (P1),  4 mg MSG + 0,26 mg  vitamin C (P2),  4 mg MSG + 0,026 vitamin E (P3), and  4 mg  MSG + 0,26 mg  vitamin C + 0,026 mg vitamin E (P4). All dosages (mg/g) were given based on body weight. Two control groups K- and K+ treated with water and castor oil respectively. The results showed that MSG decrease testis weight and its volume (P<0,05), MSG also decrease the diameter of seminiferous tubule and the number of spermatogenic cells. Vitamin C recovers testis weight (P<0,05), but cannot recover its volume, diameter of seminiferous tubules and the number  spermatogenic cells (P>0,05). Vitamin E increases the weight and volume of the testes and spermatogenic cells (P<0,05), but unable to recover diameter of the seminiferous tubules (P>0,05). The combination of vitamin C and E recover testis weight and its volume, seminiferous  tubule  diameter  and number  of  spermatogenic  cells (P<0,05). Abstract

The relationship between growth rate of Brachionus plicatilis O. F. Muller population and feeding that contain addition of local chicken manure (Gallus varius L.) and broiler chicken’s (Gallus domestica L.) in urea and triple superphosphat (TSP) was conducted on September 2012 in Animal Systematic Laboratory, Biology Department, Mathematics and Sains Faculty, Sumatera Utara University. This research used complete randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments chicken manure, that is M1 (300 mg/2 L local), M2 (400 mg/2 L local), M3 (300 mg/2 L broiler) and M4 (400/2 L broiler), with 6 times repeated and 8 times observation during 16 days. The result showed that the growth rate of B. plicatilis the highest on medium M4 is 8.492 indx2x10-3xday-1 and have the lowest on the medium M1 is 8.386 indx2x10-3xday-1. These showed that using broiler chicken’s manure is better than local chicken’s manure. Keywords : Brachionus plicatilis, growth rate, broiler chicken manure, local chicken manure

Abstract

The effect of mulberry leaf quality on the nutrition index of silk worm was studied. The aim is to determine the effect mulberry leaf (Morus multicaulis) on the nutrition index of silkworm. The experiment used completely randomized design (CRD) with 2 treatments. The first treatment the leaves were taken from Morus multicaulis that cultivated in soil with NPK, Urea and TSP fertilizer. The second the plant were not  fertilized at all. Nutrition index of silk worm was observed from instar III to instar V. Each treatment used 20 larvae. The result showed that leaf taken from a fertilized plant has significant nutrition index (p<0,05) on ECD (Efficiency Conversion of Digested Food), ECI (Efficiency Conversion of Ingested Food) in instar IV and V, and AD (Approximate Digesstibility) in instar III, IV and V. However, the GR (Growth Rate) and CR (Consumptio Rate) in instar III, IV and V showed no significant effect (p>0,05). Fertilizer only improves  ECD (Efficiency Conversion of Digested Food) in instar IV with 45.45%. ECI (Efficiency Conversion of  Ingested Food)  with III and IV  15.42% : 30.76%, and the value of AD in instar III, IV and V are 11.49%,  12.16% and 8.38% respectively. Keywords: Morus multicaulis, Bombyx mori L., fertilizer, nutrition index

Abstract

“Karyotype and Growth Analysis of Soybean (Glycine max L.) after Exposed by Ultraviolet light” has been done at Genetic and Molecular Biology Laboratory at Natural Scienes Faculty and the greenhouse at Agriculture Faculty Sumatera Utara University Medan. The objective was to investigate design karyotype and vegetative growth of soybean that induced by UV light. The experimental design was used complete factorial randomized with 2 factors. The first are Ultraviolet (UV) light 3 levels : 10, 20 and 30 Watt and the second is the time of UV exposure with 3 levels : 5, 10, and 15 minutes. Each treatment replicates 2 times and plant that not exposed by UV used as control. The karyotype was observed by squash method. The results showed that the intensity and duration of UV light have no effect on the number of chromosomes but the light has effect on the number of chromosome type. Statistical analysis showed that the increase in UV energy up to 30 Watt and time exposure of 15 minutes, caused the increase in height, number of leaves, number of flowers, the fresh and dry weight of the plant, and chlorophyll concentration compared to untreated plants. Keywords: karyotype, mutation, soybean, ultraviolet.
