Abstract

Background: The dental profession faces a significant risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) contamination, highlighting the crucial role dentists play in controlling HBV cross-contamination. Objectives: To delve into various aspects related to HBV infection control among dentists including assessment of knowledge, examination of preventive measures, and exploration of attitudes. Methodology: In this observational cross-sectional study, a total of 100 dentists were interviewed regarding their knowledge, practice, and attitude towards HBV-positive patients in Sulaimaniyah city, Iraq between January 2024 to 2025. Data collection was carried out using google forms and later was inserted into Microsoft excel and IBM SPSS for analysis. Results: Majority of participants were aged 36-40 years (36%), married (51%), held a Master's degree (42%), had their own clinic (79%), being vaccinated for HBV (87%), received 3 doses of vaccination (61%), checked for antibodies after vaccination (55%), and had 2-7 years in practice (34%). There were a significant association between knowledge, attitude and practice (p=0.000), as 50% exhibited good knowledge, 2% had good attitude, and 20% has good practice. Overall, the majority of individuals had fair to good levels of knowledge, while attitudes and practices toward oral health varied, with a significant portion demonstrating poor levels. Also, a significant association (p<0.05) between knowledge and each of gender, age and qualification were seen, while attitude was significantly related to marital status only (p=0.032), and practice had no significant association with either variable. Conclusion: The strong association between knowledge, attitude and practice has important implications for healthcare policies and interventions. It suggests that improving dentists' knowledge about HBV may positively influence their attitudes towards HBV-positive patients and lead to better practices in terms of patient care and infection control measures.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion or action. Effective diabetes management relies heavily on self-management practices, such as dietary control, physical activity, treatment adherence, and blood glucose monitoring. However, the success of a client's self-management is also influenced by family support and the family's role in carrying out family health tasks—which include recognizing health problems, making decisions, caring for family members, modifying the environment, and utilizing healthcare facilities. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between family health tasks and self-management among diabetes mellitus clients at the Maesan Community Health Center (Puskesmas) in Bondowoso Regency. Methods: This study employed a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 742 individuals with diabetes mellitus, with a sample of 193 respondents selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Research instruments included a family health tasks questionnaire (20 items) and a self-management questionnaire (35 items), both of which had undergone validity and reliability testing. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman’s Rho correlation test. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents fell into the "good" category for family health tasks (56.5%) and the "fair" category for self-management (54.4%). The Spearman’s Rho test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.612, indicating a positive relationship of moderate strength between family health tasks and self-management among diabetes mellitus clients. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between family health tasks and self-management in diabetes mellitus clients. The better the execution of family health tasks, the better the client's self-management. This study highlights the importance of optimizing the family's role in supporting successful self-management for individuals with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition characterized by stomach acid backflow into the oesophagus. The backflow of stomach acid can inflame the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as burning sensations, food reflux, difficulty swallowing, and chest pain. This condition occurs when the muscular ring between the esophagus and stomach fails to function properly, allowing stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus. During pregnancy, hormonal changes and increased stomach pressure can exacerbate symptoms. Dietary habits play a crucial role in managing GERD symptoms. This article explores the association between dietary habits and GERD symptoms during pregnancy, in Kashmir highlighting common triggers and potential alleviating foods. A balanced diet and healthy eating habits can help manage GERD symptoms, and pregnant women should work with their healthcare provider to develop a personalized plan.

Abstract

The date (Phoenix dactylifera) has been part of people's diets for thousands of years throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, where it was not only a significant source of food but also a representation of food security, perseverance, and God's grace. With the rise of modern nutritional science, dates are increasingly seen as functional foods because of their high content of dietary fibre and natural sugars as well as an array of minerals and bioactive components. This paper will provide an interdisciplinary analysis of the effects of dates on digestive comfort and cardiovascular welfare using both contemporary research in nutrition and religious texts (i.e., the Qur'an and Hadith). Using clearly specified headings that are appropriate for journal articles and providing extensive elaboration on each topic, this study illustrates how the teachings of Islam and the scientific community have converged to support dates' health benefits. This study concludes that dates exemplify a holistic approach to nutrition, integrating the spiritual, cultural, and physical aspects of human health.

Abstract

Spina bifida, a neural tube defect arising from incomplete closure of the developing spinal column, is the most common congenital anomaly of the central nervous system and a leading cause of lifelong physical disability. Despite decades of investigation, its pathogenesis remains incompletely characterized; however, substantial progress has been made in defining its genetic determinants and the molecular pathways governing neural tube development and closure. Parallel advances in clinical management have transformed patient care, with treatment evolving from conventional postnatal surgical repair to fetoscopic and open intrauterine correction, now regarded as a standard-of-care option for eligible candidates. In this review, we synthesize current knowledge of the classification, embryology, genetics, and epidemiology of spina bifida; examine its pathophysiology and associated complications; and survey established and evolving treatment approaches. We conclude by highlighting the CuRe Trial, the first FDA-approved clinical trial of stem cell therapy administered at the time of intrauterine repair, whose recently published phase 1 results suggest a potential paradigm shift in the management of this condition.

Abstract

University co-curricular programmes have been instrumental in encouraging the development of students especially in health behavior, psychological well-being and leadership skills. However, empirical research studies have not extensively covered the effects of short-term residential programmes aimed at nurturing citizenship and leadership skills among university students in Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a week-long residential training programme in citizenship and leadership on health behaviors, psychological factors and leadership skills among students. An exploratory sequential mixed method approach consisting of quasi experimental pretest/posttest design and interpretive phenomenology was used among students of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Lagos State University of Education, Oto/Ijanikin. Two hundred and fifty-three students were assessed. Significant improvements were observed among the students’ health behaviors, t(252) = -8.47, p<0.05; psychological factors, t(252) = -10.26, p<0.05; and leadership achievements, t(252) = -11.08, p<0.05. Scores were generally better in posttests than in pre-tests for all variables studied. Theme analysis shows enhanced self-control, leadership efficacy, health awareness, team work, and psychological strength to be the primary impacts of the program. This research proves that short-term programs of citizenship and leadership training at universities can have positive impact on the behavioral, psychological and leadership capabilities of students
