Abstract

Navigation safety in inland waterway and ferry transportation is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly fluctuations in river water levels. Real-time water-level information is essential for supporting decision-making in determining safe, comfortable, and efficient navigation routes while optimizing fuel consumption and maintaining schedule reliability. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the JSN-SR04T ultrasonic sensor integrated into an Internet of Things (IoT)-based water-level monitoring system to support navigation safety. The proposed system employs an ESP32 microcontroller as the central data-processing unit and wireless communication interface through a Wi-Fi network. The JSN-SR04T sensor measures variations in river water levels in real time, while the measurement results are transmitted and displayed on a mobile device, enabling users to monitor water-level conditions remotely. The research methodology comprised system design, hardware and software implementation, and sensor performance evaluation. Sensor accuracy was assessed by comparing the ultrasonic sensor measurements with reference measurements obtained manually using a measuring ruler. Ten measurement trials were conducted at different water-level conditions. The results demonstrate that the developed system can continuously monitor water levels in real time with stable performance. The JSN-SR04T sensor achieved an average measurement accuracy of 98.67%, with a measurement error of less than 1.5%. These findings indicate that the proposed IoT-based monitoring system provides reliable real-time water-level information and has strong potential as a decision-support tool for inland navigation safety, route optimization, fuel-efficiency considerations, and mitigation of accident risks associated with changing river conditions.

Abstract

Load imbalance in a three-phase four-wire system can increase neutral current, conductor heating, and reduce utilization of distribution equipment. This study aims to: (1) determine the level of current imbalance and compare measured neutral current with the theoretical resultant; (2) calculate the apparent power associated with neutral current and its percentage relative to transformer capacity; and (3) determine load-balancing priorities based on electrical indicators. A quantitative descriptive case-study approach was applied using secondary data from the PI0483 Distribution Substation on the Merapi Feeder in Indralaya. The 100 kVA transformer supplies two circuits, with R-S-T phase currents of 26-15-16 A for Circuit I and 71-85-38 A for Circuit II. The results show imbalance levels of 24.56% and 27.49%, respectively. Measured neutral currents were 13 A and 47 A, while theoretical values were 10.54 A and 41.80 A. At an average phase-to-neutral voltage of 234 V, the apparent power associated with neutral current was 12.25 kVA based on calculated currents and 14.04 kVA based on measured currents, equivalent to 12.25%-14.04% of transformer capacity. Circuit II is prioritized for load balancing because of its higher imbalance, neutral current, phase-current range, and neutral-current apparent power. These findings highlight the importance of load redistribution and monitoring.

Abstract

Off-grid renewable generation systems require a supply that is not only energy-sufficient, but also stable to source variability. This study quantified the short-term operational complementarity between photovoltaic (PV) and picohydro and evaluated the adequacy of supply to load using hourly experimental data. The system consists of two PV modules of 50 Wp each and a picohydro DC generator with a nominal capacity of 200 W with a head of 4.53 m. Measurements were taken on 10–12 July 2025 at 09.00–15.00 (n=21), including irradiation, PV power and efficiency, water discharge, turbine power, generator power and efficiency, and load power. The temperature of the PV module was not analyzed because it was not measured during the experiment. Analyses included descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk test, Pearson/Spearman correlation, linear regression, Friedman, Wilcoxon pairs, coefficient of variation (CV), trapezoidal energy integration, and load-supply adequacy ratio (LSAR). Results showed that irradiation was strongly related to PV power (r=0.998; R²=0.996; p<0.001), while water discharge was strongly related to generator power (r=0.927; R²=0.858; p<0.001). Hybridization lowered PV power CV by 33.54–53.12% and the decrease was significant (p=0.0024; rank-biserial=0.680). Hybrid energy reached 511.12; 445,42; and 436.84 Wh with an LSAR of 1.41; 1,22; and 1.21. Despite the surplus daytime energy, four of the 21 points showed generating power under load so storage remained necessary. The results showed picohydro served as an operational buffer that dampened PV fluctuations and improved supply adequacy. The findings were limited to daylight testing and did not yet represent 24-hour operation as the battery contribution was not analyzed separately.

Abstract

The utilization of solar energy as a renewable energy source requires a reliable energy storage system because its availability depends on solar irradiation intensity. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are widely used as an energy storage medium due to their long cycle life, high safety, and stable voltage characteristics. This study aims to analyze the performance and efficiency of a 200 Ah LiFePO4 battery in a Solar Power Generation (PLTS) system equipped with 420 Wp solar panels, a 24 V system voltage, and a 1.2 kW hybrid off-grid inverter. The research was conducted experimentally through battery charging and discharging tests by observing voltage, current, power, energy, State of Charge (SoC), Depth of Discharge (DoD), and operating duration. The results showed that the charging process lasted for 3 hours, with the SoC increasing from 23% to 90%. The energy supplied to the system during the charging process was 1,376.18 Wh, while the energy stored in the battery was 841.30 Wh, resulting in a charging efficiency of 94%. During the discharging process, the test lasted for 4 hours with a battery efficiency of 75%, while the inverter output voltage remained relatively stable in the range of 217–218 V AC. These results indicate that the LiFePO4 battery demonstrated good performance and reliability as an energy storage medium for a 420 Wp, 24 V solar power system and has the potential to support more efficient and sustainable utilization of solar energy.
