Abstract

Complex plots filled with surprises are often found in literary works of psychological suspense, where, in the end, the reader’s perspective will be completely twisted. This research aims to elaborate on the feature of psychological suspense in Jennifer McMahon’s work, The Children on the Hill. This novel tells how Violet and Lizzy dig for information to find the truth about something in each different time zone. It is none other than the dark family secret and the truth about the real monster. The descriptive qualitative method is applied to explain the plot of The Children on the Hill in detail and thoroughly. Through the application of Wyatt and Saricks’ theory of genre fiction characteristics, several plots that give the effect of psychological suspense were identified. The story was complex in that the truth of the matter was jumbled as information overlapped. Another surprising element is where the incident depicts a mental state that seems to be trapped in a nightmare and feels like it is beyond rationale. Both characters have their own complicated and heart-breaking problems as they go deeper to discover the truth. These plots show compatibility with Wyatt and Saricks’ theory of psychological suspense.

Abstract

South Korea's cultural industry, known as the "Korean Wave" (Hallyu), has gained international popularity, particularly among younger generations, with its media attracting global attention. Prior studies have extensively investigated the pronunciation of English words by Koreans, although these studies have not yet approached it from a phonological perspective. This study seeks to examine the pronunciation of English by Korean artists, considering the widespread acquisition of English for many purposes globally. It aims to identify common errors made by native Korean speakers in their English pronunciation and its reasons, specifically from a phonological standpoint. Qualitative analysis was conducted on data acquired from YouTube. The findings indicate that Koreans encounter difficulties with some English phonemes due to limited exposure. In phonological perspective, errors commonly seen in Korean include phoneme substitution, assimilation, vowelization, epenthesis, monophthongization, and diphthongization, with the highest number of epenthesis. These errors can be classified according to phonological processes, specifically, those linked to the place and manner of articulation, where sounds are produced whether or not obstruents are involved. In addition, Koreans tend to enhance plosive sounds with tension and aspiration. These findings enhance comprehension of linguistic discrepancies and can bolster language education endeavors.

Abstract

The African society in the present era is vexed by horrendous altitudes of identity-crises. This marks the unyielding discriminatory and stereotypical outlooks that persist in marginalising African identities despite the various efforts that emerged to rehabilitate them in the post-colonial arena. This paper aimed to deconstruct the base of identity-crisis in the African context to establish the mainspring behind the crisis from a literary standpoint. In this regard, a literary text that mirrors the colonial setting of Africa has been chosen to be utilised as a case in point. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is a germane text for the paper and has been employed as a lens to probe the focal theme of the study. Furthermore, this study has relied on a qualitative research method to deconstruct the fountainhead of the African Identity-crisis. The data collected from the literary text has been textually analysed. The study, inter alia, finds that the contact between Africa and the West during the colonial period engendered identity-crisis that is still a problem in Africa despite the continent being no longer under colonial rule. This crisis is perpetuated by colonial remnants such as Western cultures and perceptions that are still predominant in Africa.

Abstract

The perception of women as weak individuals results in their oppression, violence, and injustice, which are the fundamental reasons for their fight for equality, justice, and the right to be treated equally to men. The issue of women being objectified and abused by men is highlighted in the novel The Handmaid's Tale. This study aims to identify gender-based oppression against women and its impact on their social and mental well-being in the novel The Handmaid's Tale, using a qualitative descriptive method and a close reading approach to analyze literary motifs. The primary data source is the novel itself. The study utilized secondary sources such as journal articles, books, and relevant internet sources to gather data. The findings suggest that women experience various forms of oppression, including sexual harassment, gender role enforcement, objectification, and tight control by men. The impacts of this oppression result in trauma, psychological damage, internalization to survive, and loss of identity. In conclusion, gender-based oppression causes severe psychological and social agony for women.

Abstract

This paper investigated the morpho-syntactic distribution of ‘’ni’’ in Central Yorùbá (hence, CY) dialect. Primary and secondary data were collected on CY dialects (Ifẹ̀, Ìjẹ̀ṣà, Èkìtì and Mọ̀bà) and subjected to syntactic analysis. Noam Chomsky’s Minimalist Program (MP) of generative grammar was adopted.  Two allomorphs of ni identified are: li and ri. The dialects operate ‘’ni’’, ‘’li’’ and ‘’ri’’ as focus markers. These also have their variants that perform predicate function. These are referred to as copula in this paper. Both copula and focus markers are in complementary distribution. ‘’Ni’’ and ‘’li’’ are in free variation in Èkitì and Mọ́bà unlike Ifẹ̀ and Ìjẹ̀ṣa where they are in complementary distribution. Mọ̀bà dialect operates both the focus marker ‘’ri’’ and its copula variant ‘’ri’’ while other CY dialects operate ‘’ri’’ only as a copula. A focus marker is optionally dropped when used with some question nouns (QNs) in the dialects. Three syntactic distributions identified with ‘’ni’’ and its variants are: focused interrogatives, focus constructions and copula constructions. CY dialects exhibit some common features with respect to how both focus markers and copula are operated.

Abstract

Humans are inherently social beings, relying on communication for their survival. Video clips serve as a significant medium for expression and interpersonal connection. They hold the power to influence the public through visual narratives that complement lyrical content. Viewers often experience a direct emotional connection with the message conveyed in a video clip. In the case of Maher Zain's "The Chosen One," directed by Lena Khan, the narrative depicts the daily interactions of a Muslim individual within American society, predominantly comprised of non-Muslims. The video begins and ends with a textual reference to the inspiration drawn from Prophet Muhammad SAW, setting the thematic tone. This research endeavours to dissect the denotative, connotative, and mythological layers embedded within "The Chosen One" video clip. Music videos are complex constructs woven with various signs and symbol systems, combining visual and linguistic elements to encode messages. In this study, semiotic analysis, employing Roland Barthes' methodology, is utilized to uncover explicit meanings within the video clip. Barthes' framework distinguishes between denotation and connotation, with the latter delving into the realm of ideology or 'myth,' elucidating prevalent societal values. The findings of this research unveil the transmission of Islamic Shariah da'wah messages to the audience, emphasizing the integral role of Shariah in Islam. Shariah encompasses divine laws governing human relationships with the divine and with fellow beings, serving as a guiding framework for ethical conduct in daily life

Abstract

Tous Les Mêmes is a popular song in the album Racine Carrée by Stromae, listened all around Belgium and France. The song was written in French and showed a complex unhealthy relationship within a man and a woman. Song as a popular discourse is a strategic medium to deliver messages and influence its listeners. Tous Les Mêmes is believed to advocate gender equality to the surface of the society. However, a critical discourse analysis of the song Tous Les Mêmes has not been conducted despite its potential. Hereby, this study aims to examine the song Tous Les Mêmes, utilizing Fairclough’s three dimensional framework to uncover the hidden ideologies of how it adresses gender inequality through  gender construction, stereotype, and power dynamics within the lyrics. It also uncovers whether the song is align with gender equality principles and advocating gender equality awareness. In addition, the ideology in the discourse is contrasted with the perspective of women in gender equality and the historical analysis of gender itself. Moreover, this study finds that the song Tous Les Mêmes is ambivalent since it presents both the address of gender inequality through gender consttruction, stereotype, and power dynamics, as well as advocating a hope for less rigid society that upholds gender equality principles. In conclusion, the song focuses on addressing a woman’s perspective in an unhealthy relationship but can also address the need of gender equality within society

Abstract

The basic rule in communicating is to respect the interlocutor so that the process of communication can run smoothly. Then, the concept of impoliteness by Culpeper (1996) appears and raises new views. Rather than protecting the face of the interlocutor, the concept of impoliteness is used to attack. In communication, impoliteness should be avoided because of its potential to cause conflict. Uniquely, impoliteness is used in the entertainment sector, such as in The Simpsons Movie. With various impoliteness strategies combined with varied implementations, impoliteness that has a negative impression becomes something entertaining. This research aims to 1) Explain the use of impoliteness strategies and 2) explain its function in The Simpsons Movie. The theories used are Culpeper (1996) and (2011), while the method is descriptive qualitative. The detailed findings are bald-on-record 14%, positive impoliteness 42%, negative impoliteness 32%, sarcasm 8%, and withhold politeness 4%, which each strategy has its uniqueness. From this study, it is found that there are various implementations, combinations of delivery, and functions of impoliteness. The use of the impoliteness function plays an important role. The utilization of affective, coercive, and entertainment functions provokes the emotions of the interlocutor and audience to make the movie interesting.
