Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of sexual harassment cloaked in religious legitimacy through an analysis of the film Walid (2025), a cinematic work that critiques the abuse of religious authority. The background of cases of sexual violence in Lombok, especially in Islamic boarding schools and educational institutions, shows the existence of unequal power relations and a culture of silence that worsens the situation of victims. Walid’s film depicts charismatic religious leaders who manipulate sacred teachings to establish absolute power and commit symbolic and sexual violence. The main objectives of this study are to: (a) identify the forms of sexual harassment that are justified in the name of religion, (b) analyze the representation of religious power in films as social criticism, and (c) provide social reflections to encourage the reform of the protection system in the religious environment. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing the theories of Power and Symbolic Relations (Michel Foucault), Symbolic Violence (Pierre Bourdieu), and Feminist Critical Theology. The findings of the study show that Walid is not only a fictional representation, but also a reflective means that expose the oppressive power structures in religious institutions, as well as invite the public to build critical awareness, fight for justice for victims, and reject all forms of violence that take refuge behind religious symbols.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the types of directive speech used by the main character in the short film "Ke Jogja". The research question focuses on the speech act that the main character performs towards his interlocutor. Qualitative methods have been used in this study and have led to the following observations. Firstly, a literature review that examines directive speech acts in films has been used to collect data. Data is gathered from conversations between the primary actors and their speech partners. Documentation techniques are then executed, followed by recording the movie script to use as a data source for literature review. The study revealed three categories of directive speech: asking (25%), telling (70%), and commanding. Telling was the most commonly used form of speech act in the film. The main character in the film frequently communicates his objectives to prevent misunderstandings arising from cultural and linguistic disparities. This study's results are anticipated to be valuable to a movie audience, as comprehension of a film's language patterns enhances viewers' appreciation of its objectives. On the contrary, studying speech acts may have real-life applications when observing the speech acts of speakers and conversational partners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing reading interest in Indonesia, as reflected in national literacy data and the rising availability of translated English novels that enrich Indonesian literary culture and promote cross-cultural understanding. Figurative language is a crucial element in novels, enhancing emotional depth and narrative style, but its translation poses challenges due to cultural and linguistic differences. This research examines the use of figurative language in Meg Rosoff’s Picture Me Gone and the techniques used to translate these expressions into Indonesian. Employing a mixed qualitative and quantitative method, the study identifies 73 figurative expressions in the novel. Similes appear 23 times (32%), metaphors 18 times (25%), idioms 12 times (16%), personifications 10 times (14%), hyperboles 8 times (11%), while onomatopoeia and oxymoron each appear once (1%). Guided by Peter Newmark’s translation theory, six translation techniques were identified. Literal translation is the most dominant, found in 39 cases (53%), followed by modulation in 18 cases (25%). Reduction and descriptive equivalent are each applied in 6 cases (8%), paraphrase in 3 cases (4%), and transposition in 1 case (1%). The study highlights the difficulties translators face in preserving meaning, tone, and cultural nuances in figurative language. To address these challenges, translators adapt their strategies to maintain both fidelity to the original and naturalness in the target language. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of figurative language translation in literary texts and offers practical insights for translators, students, and literature enthusiasts.

Abstract

MANPK MAN 2 Mataram is one of the flagship madrasah programs in Indonesia. As a superior program, the education pattern is implemented using a boarding school system at State Madrasahs with the strengthening of religious and Indonesian sciences. In teaching at MANPK MAN 2 Mataram, the skills emphasized are Islamic insights but also being able to speak English communicatively and also in writing. From the results of our observations as lecturers who want to assist students at the MAN 2 PK School, we see that the problem is that these students are still lacking in mastering English vocabulary and lack of communicative English training in class, only given lots of answering practice text questions and studying grammar so that mastery of the language for speaking or communication is still lacking. To improve English speaking skills, students must also be supported by innovative methods so that maximum achievement can be achieved. In this dedication, the author uses the Spying method. By using the SPY method in this service in class, students' skills in English conversation increase. Most students actively speak and do not feel afraid and embarrassed even though they are not optimal. This method also helps them learn new vocabulary and pronunciations. Based on interviews with teachers, it can be concluded that the SPY method can help teachers increase students' interest in English subjects.
