Abstract

Plunging ranula is a mucous extravasation pseudocyst which arises from the sublingual gland and crosses the mylohyoid line into the neck, usually appear in conjunction with oral ranula. To evaluate that the early diagnosis and proper surgical procedure can decreased recurrences rate. A 25 year old man visited Department of Oral Surgery Hasan Sadikin Hospital because of a fluctuant swelling of the left submandibular region and swelling of floor of the mouth. A sonography revealed there was a cystic mass at left submandible and not related to left parotis gland and thyroid. There was enlargment of multiple gland at left neck. The clinical diagnosis was plunging ranula. This case was treated with marsupialization and extirpation of the mass included removal of sublingual salivary gland. Postoperatively, one week after surgery the swelling was reduced and there was no more pain and paresthesia. Many patients have experienced recurrence and sometimes larger lesions have occurred. Excision of the ranula with the associated sublingual salivary gland is the most accepted method with low recurrence rate. It is a case of a 25 year old male presented with plunging ranula with both the oral and submandibular component and its removal by combined intraoral and ekstraoral approach has been reported with no recurrence after a follow up of one mounth.Keyword: Plunging ranula, sublingual gland, mucous extravasation

Abstract

AbstractThe treatment of oral candidiasis commonly used antifungal drug synthesis, but it has some effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache. The leaves of red betel (Piper crocatum) have several compounds which act as antifungals such as alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Kill Concentration (MBC) Piper crocatum leaves with a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% to the growth of Candida albicans. This study is a laboratory experimental which is designed by posttest only control group using the extract of leaves of Piper crocatum. The leaves are extracted by maceration method using 96% of ethanol. The extraction results obtained diluted to be a concentration of 25%, 50%, and 75%. The extract has been tested phytochemical, were tested for antifungal activity using dilution method with Standard Plate Count (SPC) in SDA media. The result of one-way ANOVA analysis showed that the extract of Piper crocatum leaves affected the growth of C. Albicans with p = 0.00 (p0.05). 25%of the extract concentration can inhibit the growth of C. albicans From the results of this study concluded that the extract of Piper crocatum leaves affected the growth of C. Albicans with MIC at a concentration of 25% and MBC at 100% concentration of the extract of Piper crocatum.Keyword: Red bettle (Piper crocatum), Candida albicans, antifungal, dilution method.

Abstract

Adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment are increasingly motivated by esthetic considerations. The majority of these patients reject wearing labial fixed appliances and are looking instead to more esthetic treatment options, including lingual orthodontics and Invisalign appliances. Since Align Technology introduced the Invisalign appliance in 1999 in an extensive public campaign, the appliance has gained tremendous attention from adult patients and dental professionals. The transparency of the Invisalign appliance enhances its esthetic appeal for those adult patients who are averse to wearing conventional labial fixed orthodontic appliances. Although guidelines about the types of malocclusions that this technique can treat exist, few clinical studies have assessed the effectiveness of the appliance. A few recent studies have outlined some of the limitations associated with this technique that clinicians should recognize early before choosing treatment options.Keyword: Invisalign device, conventional labial fixed ortodonthics, aesthetics

Abstract

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. It is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease in which the cytotoxic CD8+ T cells trigger apoptosis of the basal cells of the oral epithelium. Linear Gingival Erythema (LGE) is a progressive disease described in HIV-positive patients and is considered to be an early stage of necrotizing periodontitis. Objective of this case report is to help clinicians to recognize and distinguish OLP lesions from other lesions that have similar appearance such as LGE and give a proper treatment for the oral lesions. We reported a case on a 49-year-old female that was referred to Oral Medicine Department from Periodontology Department with the diagnosis of ANUG and differential diagnosis of Linear Gingival Erythema. On clinical examination, we found Wickhams striae on buccal mucosa and the edge of the lesion. The patients was then diagnosed with Oral Lichen Planus. The patient was treated with sistemic and topical corticosteroid. After 8 weeks of treatment the patient was fully recovered. OLP is seen clinically as reticular, papular, plaque-like, erosive, atrophic or bullous types. Intraorally, the buccal mucosa, tongue and the gingiva are commonly involved although other sites may be rarely affected. Erosive or atrophic types that usually affect the gingiva usually show concomitant reticular form. LGE is limited to the soft tissue of periodontium and characteristically appears as an erythematous linear band that extends approximately 2 3mm from the free gingival margin. OLP lesions may have similarity with other oral lesions such as LGE. It is important for clinicians to recognize the lesions and choosing the proper treatment for the diseasesKeyword: Oral Lichen Planus, Linear Gingival Erythema, HIV, Corticosteroid

Abstract

Candida albicans (C. albicans) is the main agent in pathogenesis of oral candidiasis, and also the cigarette smoke is one of predisposing factors of C. Albicans virulence, mainly in biofilm formation that it the role as the initiator of adhesiononoral mucosal. This research aimed to identify the effect of Cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on biofilm formation of C. albicans. Candida albicans was sensitized with CSC kretek and non-kretek that shown the increase of biofilm formation (p0,05) compared control, specifically in 24 hour. Its related with massa of biofilm formation that seem by microscope (400x) and also CSC non kretek better than CSC kretek in biofilm formation of C. albicans, mainly in 24 and 48 hours, that provisional, in 12 hours were the most dominant biofilm figuration of C. albicans sensitized by CSC kretek, although it intensity is lower than 24 hours. The research was concluded that CSC can be trigger to enhancement of biofilm formation of C. albicans in 24 hours and also CSC non kretek better than CSC kretek.Keyword: Candida albicans, Cigarrete smoke condensate, Biofilm

Abstract

Parents dental knowledge and awareness are the basis of the formation for supporting or unsupportive habits for the childrens dental growth. Bad oral habit is a normal condition in the beginning of childrens life, but it should be informed that this may continue exceeding the normal stage of growth and result in abnormality in the dento facial structure, such as malocclusion. It is highly suggested that parents to be alert in preventing malocclusion caused by the continuing bad oral habit. This study, therefore, aims to identify the correlation between parents dental knowledge and the malocclusion condition on children with bad oral habit. Data are treated with correlation analysis with 100 samples of children at the age of 8 to 10 years old with bad oral habits who visit the dental clinic at Public Health Center District of Pancoran (Puskesmas Kecamatan Pancoran). Samples are drawn using the accidental purposive sampling technique from oral clinical observations and questionnaire handed to the parents. Statistic test used in this study is bivariat analysis with chi square test. The results show that the majority of the parents have an adequate knowledge (46%) on oral bad habits and malocclusion. Most of the children suffer from severe malocclusion (71%), while the rest are free from the condition. It can be concluded from the findings that there is no correlation between parents knowledge and awareness on their childrens bad oral habits and the malocclusion condition. Keywords: dental knowledge, malocclusion, bad oral habits

Abstract

A post that has fractured in a root canal can be a major problem in the endodontic retreatment. In such a situation the risk of root fracture or perforation during removal of the post remnant may be high. This case describe about solving the problem of fracture-post, removing the broken post in the canal, and retreatment of tooth. A 50 year old male patient came in to Department of Conservative Dentistry - Airlangga University with a chief complains fractured post-crown at maxillary central incisor. 2 years ago root canal treatment was performed. This post-crown fractured twice. These fractured posts can be loosened by using a ultrasonically with diamond-coated tip at the cement interface. The tip breaks up the luting cement with counter-clockwise motion and the irrigant washes it away, and this in turn helps removal with diamond-coated which is used to cut down along the cement. There are many factors that influence successful post removal such as operator judgment, training, experience, and utilizing the best technologies and techniques. Care must be taken to check the edges of the tip, sharpening them when necessary. Occasionally the edges can flare out, with resultant danger of excessive removal of dentin and increased risk of weakening the root or even perforation. Removal of the post leads to the risk of complications associated with the forming of ledges, perforations and fracture of the tooth root. For safe removal of the posts it is necessary to know and use appropriate armamentarium and suitable techniques.Keyword: removal of metal endodontic post, endodontic retreatment, ultrasonics
