Abstract

The fish ball processing industry has significant economic potential, but it also has environmental impacts due to the solid and liquid waste it produces. This study aims to evaluate the potential for implementing a cleaner production approach in the household-scale meatball processing industry in Harapan Village to improve sustainability and competitiveness for the local industry. The method used in data collection in this study was through observation and interviews with household-scale fish ball businesses. Based on the research, the fish ball processing industry in Harapan Village produces two types of waste: liquid waste consisting of fish washing water and fish meat washing water, and solid waste in the form of fish bones and scales. The cleaner production approach applies 5 principles: elimination (prevention), reduce (reduction), reuse (reuse), recycle (recycling), and recovery (recovery of valuable materials) which have not been implemented by business actors. Thus, the household-scale fish ball processing industry in Harapan Village still requires significant improvements in cleaner production.

Abstract

Population growth has increased the volume of household waste and has increased people's domestic activities as it is directly launched into waters. One of the major contributors to water pollution from domestic activities is the use of detergents, which contain chemical compounds such as surfactants and phosphates. Detergents contain active chemicals such as surfactants and phosphates which, while effective at removing dirt, can be bad for the environment. When these wastes enter rivers or lakes, they can damage the balance of aquatic ecosystems and disrupt the lives of living things in them. This article includes a review of the effects of active chemicals on surface water quality. A review of previous research shows that the presence of these wastes can reduce the physical, chemical and biological quality of water due to increased values of BOD, COD and nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates.

Abstract

The brackish water ecosystem is a transitional zone between freshwater and seawater, rich in biodiversity and possessing vital ecological functions. This study was conducted at Charlita Beach, North Gunungsitoli, using field observation methods with a qualitative approach. The results revealed the presence of Rhizophora mucronata mangroves, characteristic fauna such as silverside fish, mangrove crabs, and sea snails, as well as abiotic conditions including calm salty water and muddy substrates. Local tourism activities provide positive economic impacts but require proper management to avoid damaging the ecosystem. This study emphasizes the importance of protecting and sustainably managing brackish water ecosystems.

Abstract

Water quality is a crucial factor affecting ecosystem sustainability and the socio-economic impacts of aquatic resources. This study reviewed academic literature to assess the state of water quality in Indonesia, identify the main causes of pollution such as domestic, industrial and agricultural effluents, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing management. The findings show that a number of water bodies, including the Citarum River and Lake Limboto, have suffered significant quality degradation due to eutrophication and heavy metal pollution. Weak regulations, lack of community involvement, and limited institutions exacerbate this condition. Therefore, collaborative and innovative approaches involving government, communities and the private sector are needed to achieve adaptive and sustainable water management.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of using organic fertilizers on the level of primary productivity and biomass growth of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in aquaculture systems. Organic fertilizers play a role in increasing the fertility of aquaculture media by improving the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the environment. Consistent application of organic fertilizers can increase the availability of nutrients, improve the structure of the pond bottom, and stimulate the growth of phytoplankton and zooplankton which become natural food for tilapia, thereby increasing the primary productivity of waters. This increase in primary productivity directly supports the growth and increase in biomass of tilapia. Various studies have shown that the application of organic fertilizers, both in solid and liquid form, can increase the growth rate, survival rate, and biomass yield of tilapia, although its effectiveness depends on the dosage and environmental conditions. Therefore, the use of organic fertilizers in tilapia farming not only helps to preserve the aquatic ecosystem, but also increases the overall productivity and efficiency of the tilapia farming business.

Abstract

Water quality management in public waters is a crucial aspect of maintaining ecosystem balance and the sustainability of aquatic resources. This study examines key water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and organic matter content, as well as their impact on aquatic life. Data were collected through field surveys and laboratory analyses at various public water locations. Results indicated significant variations in water quality, largely influenced by anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and industry. The study recommends sustainable management strategies to preserve water quality and support aquatic ecosystem conservation.

Abstract

Estuaries are transitional ecosystems between freshwater and marine environments, characterized by high productivity and complex biodiversity. This study aims to analyze the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of estuarine ecosystems and identify the impact of anthropogenic activities on environmental quality and community structure. A descriptive quantitative method was applied through field observations and laboratory analysis across three estuarine zones (upstream, middle, and downstream). The results show environmental gradients, with increasing salinity and nutrient levels from upstream to downstream. Communities of phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrozoobenthos, and fish displayed distribution patterns influenced by local environmental conditions. Decreasing dissolved oxygen and rising nitrate and phosphate concentrations indicate anthropogenic pressures that may degrade ecosystem quality. Therefore, sustainable estuarine management is necessary to maintain ecological balance and ecosystem services.

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive literature review on the impact of physical of ponds on the growth and survival of dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus). By analyzing various studies and scientific articles, this research summarizes information on the optimal range as well as the negative effects of temperature, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels on the physiology and growth performance of dumbo catfish. The sources studied consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining the stability of physical variables within the limits acceptable to this species to improve efficiency in aquaculture. The synthesis also points out knowledge gaps and areas of research needed to better understand the complex interactions between the physical variables of pond waters and the biological reactions of dumbo catfish. The conclusion of this review emphasizes that proper management of the physical variables of pond waters is a key factor for success and sustainability in dumbo catfish aquaculture.

Abstract

Estuary waters are transitional ecosystems between marine and terrestrial environments that are highly productive but vulnerable to environmental degradation. productive but vulnerable to environmental damage, especially due to nutrient pollution from human activities. Literature studies in the last five years the last five years have shown that key nutrient elements such as nitrate, phosphate and ammonium play an important role in estuary ecosystem dynamics. High concentrations of nitrate and phosphate concentrations are associated with an increase in phytoplankton, but can also lead to potential eutrophication. can lead to potential eutrophication, Changes in currents due to nutrient inputs affect the composition of the plankton community in the estuary, river flows carry high nutrient loads from the land which accelerates the eutrophication process as well as changes in the trophic status of the waters. changes in the trophic status of the waters. This article aims to assess the influence of nutrients on estuary waters based on a literature review, and provide recommendations for sustainable ecosystem-based management.

Abstract

The study of stagnant freshwater ecosystems aims to identify and understand the characteristics of non-flowing aquatic environments such as rice fields, swamps, and ponds. This practicum was conducted in Hilimbowo Olora Village and involved observations of physical parameters (color, odor, substrate), biotic components (vegetation and fauna), as well as the identification of plant and animal species present. Observations showed that the water was clear and odorless, with a substrate composed of mud. The dominant vegetation included rice and water spinach, while the observed fauna consisted of panchax fish, golden apple snails, and freshwater crabs. This study highlights the importance of interactions between abiotic and biotic components in maintaining ecosystem balance. Additionally, the practicum provided students with hands-on experience in observing, analyzing, and classifying aquatic organisms based on morphological characteristics. Thus, this activity contributes to enhancing students’ understanding and ecological awareness of the importance of conserving aquatic ecosystems.
