Abstract

Background: Forensic dentistry is still a growing field in Pakistan. The lack of scientific evidence on the subject can lead to difficulties in situations where age assessment plays a significant role in areas such as criminal and civil proceedings. In large-scale disasters such as earthquakes and accidents, correct investigation of chronological age is less difficult if there is evidence for a specific group of people. Objectives: The purpose of this scoping review was to screen the scientific literature and to find the studies that have been performed with different age estimation methods that have been applied to the Pakistani population over the years. Methodology: It was carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines by searching the following online databases: PubMed/Medline, Scielo,Lilacs,Sciencedirect,Open grey Base, and OATD. A total of 1771 articles were found out. Results: A total of 17 studies remained for full text reading. Out of the 17 studies, eight were excluded because of their study design and two were out of topic. One study was added by expert opinion and a total of eight articles were included in this scoping review including Demirjian’s method, Nolla, Willem’s, Kohler’s, Bang and Ramm, Cameriere,Lamendin’s and Kvaal’s method. Conclusion: The clinical implications of this study are relevant to forensic odontology and clinical dentistry. Overestimation and underestimation of dental age using different methods determines the difference between chronological age time and estimated dental age.

Abstract

A traumatic ulcer is a lesion on oral soft tissues caused by trauma. Treatment with triamcinolone acetonide is effective, although prolonged use may result in adverse effects. As an alternative, black cumin and mangosteen peel, which contain thymoquinone and xanthones, can promote collagen formation during the wound healing process. This study aims to determine the effect of a gel containing a combination of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) and mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) extracts on the formation of collagen in the healing of traumatic ulcers in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). A randomized post test only controlled group design method was conducted using 40 Wistar rats with 2 observation times (days 6 and 12). The mice were divided into 5 groups: control groups administered with base gel (K-) and triamcinolone acetonide 0,1% (K+), treatment groups administered with 40% black cumin (P1), 15% mangosteen peel (P2), and a combination of 20% black cumin and 10% mangosteen peel extract gel (P3). Collagen was analyzed using Masson's trichrome staining, followed by statistical analysis with Independent t-Test and One-Way ANOVA. The results showed that the combination gel group had a higher average collagen area on days 6 and 12 compared to the other groups. These findings indicate that the combination gel of black cumin and mangosteen peel extracts promotes collagen formation in the healing of traumatic ulcers in Wistar rats.

Abstract

The tongue is one of the soft tissues in the oral cavity with a large surface area that can serve as a reservoir for pathogenic microorganisms associated with various oral diseases. Despite its important role in maintaining oral health, tongue cleaning is often neglected as part of daily oral hygiene practices. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of tongue-cleaning behavior between health and non-health students and to identify factors associated with this behavior. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design involving 360 students from Diponegoro University, consisting of 180 health students and 180 non-health students, in their 6th–8th semesters who were actively participating in selected academic activities, using a consecutive sampling method. Data were collected using a validated online questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square test to assess differences in tongue-cleaning behavior between groups and associated influencing factors. The results showed that the prevalence of tongue-cleaning behavior was significantly higher among health students (72.2%) than among non-health students (52.8%) (p < 0.001). The main factors associated with not performing tongue cleaning were discomfort during tongue cleaning and lack of knowledge regarding the importance of tongue cleaning. Among non-health students, lack of knowledge was identified as the predominant factor, whereas discomfort during tongue cleaning was more frequently reported among health students. In conclusion, health students demonstrated significantly better tongue-cleaning behavior than non-health students. Knowledge and comfort-related factors were found to influence tongue-cleaning practices among university students. Improving awareness regarding the importance of tongue cleaning may help promote better oral hygiene behavior.

Abstract

Fixed orthodontics may compromise the patient’s oral health and reduce salivary pH, thereby increasing the risk of dental caries. One way of increasing pH of saliva is by using natural ingredients such as basil leaf as a mouthwash. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of duration in rinsing 4% basil leaf extract (Ocimum africanum Lour.) on saliva pH of fixed orthodontic users. This study used a quasi-experimental pre test-post test control group design with 30 respondents from Diponegoro University’s Faculty of Medicine. Saliva samples were obtained for pH measurements before and after rinsing. The samples were divided into 6 groups, namely the treatment group rinsing with 4% basil leaf extract solution and the control group rinsing with distilled water for a duration of 1 minute, 2 minutes, and 3 minutes. The results were analysed using One-Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc tests. One-Way ANOVA results showed a significant difference with a value of p=0.000 (p<0.05) in salivary pH between the treatment group and control group. LSD post hoc tests showed that the treatment group rinsing 4% basil leaf extract with a duration of 1 minutes did not significantly increase pH, but rinsing durations of 2 minutes and 3 minutes had effectively increased pH. The conclusion of this study is that rinsing with 4% basil leaf extract for 2 minutes or longer effectively increases salivary pH in users of fixed orthodontics to reach neutral to alkaline levels.

Abstract

Stem cells play a crucial role in regenerative medicine, contributing to tissue repair, maintaining homeostasis, and regulating the cellular environment. Among various sources, stem cells derived from human dental pulp are particularly promising due to their accessibility, ethical acceptability, and broad differentiation potential. They can be obtained from permanent and deciduous teeth, including tissues normally discarded, and preserved through cryopreservation, facilitating storage and clinical use. Dental pulp stem cells exhibit multilineage differentiation potential, giving rise to odontogenic, osteogenic, chondrogenic, adipogenic, and neurogenic cell lineages. This enables applications in dental tissue regeneration, nerve repair, blood vessel formation, and restoration of musculoskeletal and pancreatic tissues. Despite more than two decades of intensive research, routine clinical implementation remains limited by biological barriers, methodological heterogeneity, insufficient standardization, regulatory challenges, and incomplete GMP-oriented manufacturing and biobanking frameworks. Unlike previous reviews that primarily summarize the biological properties and regenerative applications of DPSCs, this review integrates biological evidence with translational, manufacturing, regulatory, biobanking, and system-level perspectives in order to identify the major barriers preventing routine clinical implementation. Furthermore, it highlights regenerative veterinary medicine within the One Health framework as a complementary translational platform that may facilitate technology maturation, improve manufacturing and regulatory readiness, and support broader implementation of DPSC-based therapies in human medicine. The major challenge is no longer the biological potential of DPSCs but the coordinated integration of  biological, technological, manufacturing, regulatory, and clinical processes required for successful clinical translation.
