Abstract

The ethical landscape of modern business practices is increasingly influenced by historical narratives, particularly those derived from religious texts. This study examines the reinterpretation of prophetic stories in shaping contemporary business ethics within the Islamic world. The primary aim is to explore how these narratives can inspire ethical decision-making among Muslim entrepreneurs in the 21st century. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with Islamic scholars and business leaders and document analysis of prophetic teachings and relevant literature. The findings reveal that key ethical principles such as honesty, justice, and accountability, exemplified in prophetic stories, are highly applicable in today’s business environment. Participants emphasized the importance of these values in navigating modern ethical dilemmas and fostering a culture of integrity within their organizations. This research highlights the potential of prophetic teachings to guide ethical business practices and instill a sense of responsibility among the youth. By integrating these historical narratives into contemporary education and training, this study aims to contribute to the development of a framework for ethical business conduct rooted in Islamic values.

Abstract

Islamic trade has historically contributed to the global economic landscape, fostering trust, ethical practices, and a commitment to communal welfare. Today, these principles are foundational to the rapidly expanding halal economy, a market that transcends Muslim-majority regions and appeals to a global consumer base seeking ethical and sustainable products. This study aims to explore the role of Islamic trade history in shaping a cohesive global halal economic network within the digital era, focusing on how historical values can be integrated into modern digital practices. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through document analysis, focusing on both historical records and contemporary halal market data. The findings show that principles of ethical transparency and communal benefit rooted in Islamic trade are essential for addressing modern digital marketplace challenges, such as product authenticity and consumer trust. Implementing digital tools, including blockchain and standardized certification, strengthens halal market integrity and enhances consumer confidence globally. The study highlights the importance of adopting these historically grounded principles to support sustainable growth and ethical practices in the halal economy.

Abstract

The current discourse on sustainable development is often dominated by the technocratic and secular Western paradigm, while the historical contributions of non-Western civilizations, especially Islam, have received less academic attention. This article aims to explore the values and historical practices in classical Islamic civilization that reflect the principles of sustainable development, emphasizing the ecosocial dimension of history as the main analytical approach. The method used is qualitative research with a historical-thematic approach, through a literature study of primary and secondary sources from three major Islamic civilization cities: Baghdad, Córdoba, and Timbuktu. The analytical techniques used include data reduction, thematic categorization, and hermeneutic interpretation of texts and social-ecological practices. The results show that classical Islamic civilization has applied the principles of social justice, ecological balance, and spiritual responsibility in urban governance, agricultural systems, water management, and social institutions such as waqf. The intellectual contributions of Muslim figures in the fields of science, agriculture, and architecture also laid the foundation for a holistic development framework. This research confirms that maqāṣid al-sharī'ah values have high relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and can be an alternative to today's development paradigm that is more ethical and contextual. The findings are expected to enrich the development discourse with a history- and value-based Islamic perspective.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought fundamental changes in the practice of Islamic da'wah, especially through the shift in the medium of khutbah from physical space to digital platforms. Digital sermons are now not only a means of delivering religious messages, but also an instrument of establishing the authority, identity and solidarity of Muslims on a global scale. This research aims to: (1) trace the evolution of khutbah from the classical period to the digital era, (2) analyze the role of digital khutbah in expanding the reach of global Islamic da'wah, and (3) assess the relevance of digital khutbah in maintaining religious authority in the midst of the information age. This research uses a qualitative approach with historical-critical methods and thematic analysis, based on a study of 50 digital sermons from international da'wah figures disseminated through platforms such as YouTube and podcasts. The results show that digital khutbahs retain their classic moral and educative functions, but evolve in the context of visualization, interactivity and global audience response. Dominant themes include tawhid, ummah solidarity and digital ethics. In addition, this study found that digital khutbahs contribute to the democratization of religious authority, where credibility is determined more by digital connectivity and participation than traditional authority structures. Thus, digital khutbah is an adaptive and relevant medium of da'wah in responding to the challenges of Muslims in the era of information globalization.

Abstract

Mosques have a central position in the history of Islamic civilization as multifunctional institutions that not only act as places of worship, but also as centers of education, social, economic, and government. However, the times, especially in the context of modern urbanization, have led to a significant transformation of these functions. This study aims to describe and analyze the changes in the social function of the mosque from the time of the Prophet to the modern urban era, identify the factors that influence it, and offer strategies for revitalizing the mosque's function as a center of civilization. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with multiple case study design and thematic analysis and historical comparative methods. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis from four representative mosques in various eras and regions. The results show that the social function of mosques has experienced fragmentation due to changes in social and political structures. Nevertheless, mosques still have great potential as centers of social transformation, if supported by participatory governance, program digitalization, and community orientation. The findings show the importance of reintegrating the mosque's function as a spiritual and social public space that is adaptive to the dynamics of contemporary urban society. This study contributes to the conceptual and practical development of mosque management based on history and the needs of the times.

Abstract

The long journey of Islamic civilization shows that the transmission of knowledge did not only take place in the Middle East, but also included a trajectory from Andalusia to the Islamic East, including the archipelago. Andalusia as the intellectual center of Islam in the West played an important role in producing monumental works in the fields of philosophy, Sufism, and Islamic law which later influenced the mindset and religious practices in other regions. This research aims to identify and analyze the process of intellectual transfer from Andalusia to Nusantara through the network of scholars, classical works, and Islamic educational institutions. Using a historical qualitative approach and hermeneutic analysis techniques, this research traces the intellectual traces of Andalusian figures and the transformation of their ideas in the local context of the archipelago through manuscripts, scholarly sanads, and cultural adaptations. Data were collected through literature study, manuscript analysis, and network mapping of scholars. The results showed that the process of knowledge transfer took place through transnational intellectual pathways involving civilization nodes such as Cairo, Baghdad, and Delhi, before reaching scholarly centers in the archipelago such as Aceh and Java. The main ideas of thinkers such as Ibn Rushd and Ibn Arabi were localized in the form of poetry, suluk, and yellow books. Islam Nusantara thus proves to be a synthesis of global intellectual traditions and local culture, confirming its strategic position in the world's Islamic civilization.

Abstract

Growing global economic inequality has raised concerns over the failure of the conventional economic system to create social justice. In this context, Islamic teachings offer an alternative approach that emphasizes wealth distribution, social solidarity, and moral balance as an integral part of the economic system. This research aims to (1) explore the values of social justice in Islamic civilization; (2) analyze the relevance and implementability of these principles in responding to global economic inequality; and (3) provide recommendations for Islamic-based redistributive policies. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method and thematic analysis of Islamic primary sources as well as academic literature and current global data. The results show that values such as al-'adl, maslahah, and ukhuwwah have a fundamental role in building social justice structures. Instruments such as zakat and waqf have proven effective as sustainable wealth redistribution mechanisms, even when compared to conventional fiscal policies. Furthermore, Islamic teachings are able to provide a normative and practical basis for formulating a more ethical and humane global economic system. This study concludes that the integration of Islamic values in global socio-economic policies can be a significant contribution in efforts to tackle economic inequality in a structural and sustainable manner.
