Abstract

This article examines the construction of visibility within peripheral creative economies through a case study of Batik Kei in the Kei Islands, Southeast Maluku. The study aims to understand how local creative actors establish cultural and economic presence through communicative strategies that are adaptive to social structures, geographic constraints, and local cultural values. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected via in-depth interviews with the business owners of D.E Batik Kei, marketing personnel, employees, local government representatives, and consumers. Findings reveal that although the enterprise has implemented integrated marketing communication principles—including direct marketing, sales promotion, personal selling, public relations, and advertising—the strategies remain suboptimal. Limited human resources and low media engagement hinder consistent visibility and restrict broader market penetration. This study contributes to the sociology of communication by reframing visibility as a product of symbolic negotiation rather than mere promotional activity. It advocates for culturally grounded communication strategies and stronger engagement with local actors to strengthen peripheral creative economies as integral components of the national economic ecosystem. As such, the study offers both conceptual and practical insights at the intersection of communication, local culture, and creative industries.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between educators and students in fostering creativity through an environment-based learning approach at Green Moluccas Nature School in Maluku. The focus lies in how social relations formed through interpersonal interaction can create a collaborative, open, and supportive learning space that enhances students' creative expression. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, comprising data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students’ creativity is significantly influenced by the quality of interpersonal communication, particularly in terms of openness, empathy, equality, positive attitude, and active support from educators. Dialogic transactional communication fosters deep emotional understanding, enabling teachers to guide students contextually in environmental practices such as waste processing. The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on integrating interpersonal communication into ecological pedagogy as a strategy to enhance creativity in island-based regions. This research contributes to the field of social sciences—especially the sociology of communication—by highlighting how interpersonal interaction functions not only as a medium of instruction but also as a transformative tool in socially and ecologically contextualized education.

Abstract

This article analyzes how digital disruption through social media reshapes forms of social collectivity in Angar Village, Maluku, highlighting the central role of rural youth in this transformation. Employing a qualitative approach, the study uses digital ethnography and participant observation, complemented by in-depth interviews with local youth and community figures. Findings reveal that social media not only enables new modes of individual identity expression but also accelerates a shift from traditional, value-based mechanical solidarity to a pattern of networked individualism. This disruption fosters fluid, temporary, and algorithm-driven interactions, yet remains emotionally entangled with local communal ties. Theoretically, the study contributes to the renewal of Durkheimian solidarity theory within the context of digital societies and broadens the scope of rural sociology in Indonesia’s peripheral regions. The novelty of this research lies in its contextualized examination of how youth in digitally connected yet geographically isolated communities negotiate identity and solidarity. It calls for a more adaptive sociological framework to grasp the evolving social dynamics of rural youth in the era of global connectivity, while also encouraging locally grounded digital sociology.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of self-disclosure and the formation of digital intimacy among emerging adults—young people aged 19–22—who use the Litmatch social application in Ambon, Indonesia. As a region rarely highlighted in digital sociology, Ambon presents a distinctive sociocultural landscape shaped by strong kinship values, religiosity, and social decorum. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and digital participant observation, the study reveals how Litmatch—as a semi-anonymous interaction space—enables users to explore identity and build intimacy online, free from the social expectations present in offline life. Findings indicate that practices of self-disclosure on this platform are shaped by tensions between traditional values and individual aspirations for expressive freedom. This research offers novelty by integrating the perspectives of identity sociology, media sociology, and youth studies within a culturally specific context that remains underexplored. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of viewing digital spaces as complex arenas for identity negotiation and calls for a more contextualized and culturally sensitive development of digital sociology in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines the strategic role of youth and women in the development of community-based ecotourism at Liang Beach, Maluku, as a form of grassroots social mobilization that integrates environmental advocacy and local cultural preservation. Employing a qualitative approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of local documents, the study explores the dynamic social roles of local actors in ecotourism practices. Findings reveal that youth and women are not merely facilitators of tourism activities but act as change agents who construct ecotourism spaces grounded in cultural values and community ecology. Their involvement reflects resistance to the dominance of external actors and signals the emergence of a new collective identity rooted in social solidarity and environmental sustainability. The novelty of this study lies in positioning Eastern Indonesia as a peripheral yet significant locus of social knowledge production, and in reframing ecotourism as a locally driven social practice rather than solely an economic or institutional project. It advances sociological perspectives on environment, gender, and community by offering a contextual and participatory approach to understanding shifting power relations, symbolic resistance, and cultural identity reconstruction through ecotourism. These findings contribute to developing socially and ecologically just tourism models within broader social and political discourses.

Abstract

This study explores how adolescents in Ambon construct self-identity through the internalization of Korean popular culture (K-Pop) while maintaining ties to their local social context. Employing a qualitative approach—including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and digital ethnography—this research investigates how global aspirations, manifested through K-Pop fandom, changes in appearance, and participation in fan communities, are transformed into meaningful emotional and social expressions in everyday life. The findings reveal that youth identity performance is not passive imitation but a conscious negotiation of global cultural values with local religious, communal, and social norms. The study’s novelty lies in its geographic focus on Eastern Indonesia—an underrepresented site in popular culture studies—and its integration of affective sociology and youth cultural agency to frame glocalization as both an emotional and performative process. This research offers a significant contribution to cultural and emotional sociology by illuminating the active role of youth in reshaping identity through global media flows, while also providing conceptual grounding for more inclusive educational and cultural policy that reflects the complex dynamics of youth expression in a globalized era.

Abstract

This study investigates how digital media—particularly TikTok and Korean dramas (K-Dramas)—shape affective aspirations and romantic desires among university students at Pattimura University in Ambon. The focus lies in exploring how young adults imagine and idealize romantic partners through media representations they routinely consume, and how these representations are mediated by local cultural contexts. Employing a qualitative interpretative approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and light netnographic observation of media interactions in Ambon. Data analysis uses thematic analysis to examine meaning-making processes, affective dynamics, and gender representations within popular culture. Findings reveal that romantic portrayals in K-Dramas and TikTok function not merely as entertainment, but as symbolic frameworks shaping relational aspirations and emotional values among youth. The study highlights ongoing negotiations between global romantic ideals and local identities in the postcolonial social setting of Eastern Indonesia. Its novelty lies in integrating theories of affective sociology and mediatization within an underexplored peripheral context, while introducing “affective aspirations” and “mediated desires” as conceptual tools for analyzing contemporary intimacy. This research contributes to cultural and affective sociology by demonstrating that love and intimacy are not purely personal experiences, but socially constructed through the symbolic economy of digital media and global cultural flows.

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of role play learning methods to the development of interpersonal communication competence among early childhood learners in peripheral regions of Indonesia, focusing on TK Ilwiaru Watumera Wakarleli in Southwest Maluku. Framed within participatory pedagogy, symbolic interactionism, and social reproduction theory, the study positions role play not merely as a learning activity but as a form of social practice that shapes children’s communicative habitus within their local cultural context. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of classroom activities. Findings reveal that role play significantly facilitates early socialization, strengthens children's capacity as reflective social actors, and fosters interactional dynamics reflecting the norms, values, and social structures of the local community. This research contributes novel insight by highlighting the transformative potential of symbolic play in early childhood education in Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) areas—not only as a medium for reproducing existing structures but also for initiating social change. The study advocates for context-based, culturally grounded early childhood curricula that support inclusive communication skills and align with broader efforts toward the decolonization of education in the social and political sciences.
