Abstract

The existence of Balinese diaspora in East Java spreads across the districts and cities. Some developments that occurred when the Balinese formed diaspora in East Java, among others include implementing the model of religious activities to inculcate religious teachings such as dharma wacana. This paper aims to describe the structure, rhetorical pattern and linguistic characteristics of dharma wacana delivered in religious events in East Java, especially in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. The analysis suggested that the structure of dharma wacana of Balinese diaspora community consisted of an disclosure, content, and closure. The pattern also indicated that the preacher of dharma wacana had taken a variety of ways and measures for each section and had different communicative purposes as well as used different rhetorical functions. This analysis also suggested that there were some repetitions in pattern and measure such as the repetition of the proposition, quotations, arguments, and solicitation. Another rhetorical characteristic of the text of dharma wacana found in this study was that the preacher relied on references (citations) in the holy verses to justify the importance of the topic of dharma wacana. Linguistic characteristics of dharma wacana includes vocabulary of religious genre and code-mixing between subtle Bali language and Bahasa.

Abstract

This article analyses the importance of maintaining local wisdom for Balinese people in order to face various negative impacts of social changes brought about by globalisation. The symptom, which is basically felt by the Balinese today, is the fundamental socio-cultural change. The acceleration of the information coming along with the wave of globalization has been significantly experienced by the Balinese, both at the level of the “surface structure” (the attitudes and the pattern of behavior) and at the level of the “deep structure” (the value system, the life view, the philosophy, and the belief). The change is due to the culture contacts between countries in which there are dialectic fight between the contemporary values and those of the traditional where one tries to take the domination of another. Here, the hegemony and the neoliberal views are possibly coming and breaking all the aspects of life, including the values of the local culture ever obeyed firmly by the Balinese society. This condition leads to a spit and uncertain values situation because the people give more attention and respect to the modern values and marginalize the transcendental values. This is resulting in various violations of the moral values reflected by the feature, the style, and the life pattern of the society to occur. Therefore, reinforcement and inheritance of the Balinese local wisdom have to be conducted intensively to the Balinese younger generation.

The Indonesian government has implemented 2013 curriculum focusing on character education. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss the relations of power in the history of the contemporary Hindu religion in Bali. The concept of power relations refers to the concept of Power and Discourse of Michel Foucault, while the term “invented religion” is a development of Invented Tradition by Eric Hobsbawm. “Invented religion” in this study is defined as the practice of Hindu religion, which was invented, constructed, and officially manifested; and the religious practice which emerged in a relatively short time; and in a few years it has been regarded as an established religion. Based on the concept of Power and Discourse of Foucault, I argue that there are relations of power that shape and sustain the practice of “invented religion.” I will try to find the power relations in a God worshipping discourse in Samuantiga and Jagatnatha temples. There are two research questions that I raise for the argument, namely how and why these two discourses emerge and thrive in contemporary’s practice of Hinduism? The answer to both questions will be sought at the present Balinese-Hindu intellectual thought. Then, it is assessed using the Genealogy Method of Foucault. My conclusion is that the presence of the two discourses is only to harmonize Hinduism with Islam as the majority religion in Indonesia.
