Abstract

The Bali Arts Festival, locally known as Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB), is an annual colossal festival of performing arts intended to preserve and explore cultural arts, as can be observed from the variety of programs performed, the number of artists involved and the number of viewers. This study analyzes how the public space at the Bali Arts Centre is managed not only to perform a professional and high-quality festival but also to make artists, entrepreneurs and viewers feel comfortable in enjoying it. The data were obtained through interviews, library research, and observation of the 2023 PKB and analyzed using the theory of public space proposed by Gottdiener and Lefebvre. The study concludes that the government has realized that improving the public space and the Arts Centre supporting facilities proves that public space management is as important as the arts curatorial process to present the quality of the PKB and public viewing experiences.

Abstract

The Bali Provincial Government collaborates with desa adat (customary village) to enhance their strength and resilience, notably through the enactment of Province of Bali Regulation Number 4 of 2019. However, excessive regulatory impact may diverge from this goal. This study explores the ideological framework shaping interactions between desa adat and the government post-regulation. Using a qualitative methodology, data were collected through literature review, observations, and in-depth interviews. The findings draw on theories of hegemony, ideology, discourse, and the power of knowledge. Hidden ideologies of power, capital, and religion influence these interactions. The regulation's uniform framework on diverse desa adat leads to resistance and inefficiency, reflecting hegemonic control and the use of ideology and knowledge to legitimize power. This article contributes to developing legislation that empowers the desa adat while maintaining their unique characteristics.

Abstract

This article attempts to look deeper into the Udayana School of Kajian Budaya compared to the spell of British Cultural Studies to understand both modes and critical discourses in debate. It hopes to widen the horizon on the plurality of cultural studies versions existing beyond Britain, the United States and Europe; specifically the Udayana School of Kajian Budaya in Bali and broadly in Indonesia. Hence, the authors conducted a literature search to compile relevant publications, interviewed Kajian Budaya lecturers and alumni, and employed critical interpretive analysis to the data. The study indicates formation of the British and the Udayana School variants were influenced by critical theory of the Frankfurt School and postmodernism ideas of French and American thinkers, which critiqued institutions of modernity, capitalist society, positivism in scientific inquiry, ‘classical’ enlightenment thought, and the culture industry. However, the Udayana School of Kajian Budaya exhibits distinctiveness in its study areas, approach and paradigm.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively review Bali tourism-related literature from 1979 to 2022. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining bibliometric techniques and a literature review. The analysis includes 128 international publication records from the Scopus database that contain the keywords "tourism in Bali." The study categorizes research trends in Bali tourism into four primary categories: research sites, research methods, research scopes, and tourism-related components. However, the study is limited by its reliance on a single database, Scopus. These findings can serve as hypotheses for future investigations. This study is anticipated to provide a valuable resource for scholars and researchers interested in studying Bali tourism, representing the first and most current review of the literature on the evolution of tourism studies in Bali over the past four decades.

Abstract

This article defines the various layers and identity labels of the Balinese society. Much of their indigenous customs have been linked with Hinduism, and many would regard the two to be inseparable. This article, however, attempts to separate the indigenous elements of ancestral worship from the Vedic or Hindu understanding of societal divisions in order to properly study the two and how they influence one another. The history of the island has enforced the rigid caste system, but the application of Hindu philosophy serves an idealized definition of caste. In such a way, the Hindu or Vedic belief does provide much relief for Balinese society. However, they are still defined by their patrilineal heritage, and are bound to ancestral worship as per their indigenous religion. Fueled by the contemporary socio-political landscape of Bali, there is a need to properly define what Balinese identity actually is.

Abstract

This research examines Mahabharata epic puppet (wayang) comics, created by three renowned comic artists: R. A. Kosasih, Teguh Santosa, and Gun Gun, who respectively have Sundanese, Javanese, and Balinese cultural backgrounds, through the lens of Indonesian identity articulation. The comics of wayang which translates ‘puppet’, are a distinctive genre that employs panels to depict puppetry tales. While being influenced by foreign cultures such as American comic art and the Indian Mahabharata epic, these artists intentionally incorporate Indonesian elements into their works. This is evident from 1955 to the present. This research used a critical qualitative descriptive approach to investigate the articulation of the identity discourse within the cultural realm of comics. The comic works of the artists are analysed through articulation and hegemony theory. The research concludes that the artists’ works establish a cultural connection and relate cultural comic art to Indonesian readers. This not only constructs Indonesian identity but also promotes cultural diversity.

Abstract

The contemporary history of Balinese performing arts is characterized by the inception of the renowned puppeteer Wayan Nardayana’s monumental puppet show, popularly known as puppet or wayang Cenk Blonk, derived from the name of their punakawan characters (servants to the main hero) who are comical, intelligent, critical, and possessed of a broad range of social knowledge. The emergence of the Cenk Blonk puppeteer since the early 1990s has led to a significant expansion of the wayang performance in Bali, from rural older adult to urban youth audiences. This article examines the popularity of puppeteer Nardayana, focusing on his ability to incorporate rhetoric into his performances. The data was taken from the dialogue texts of his performances and examined with rhetoric theory. The study demonstrates that puppeteer Nardayana’s popularity is attributed to his ability to present stories in a refreshing, original, critical, and entertaining style without sacrificing the traditional puppetry principles. This study contributes to appreciating the revitalization of traditional art in a globalized era.

Abstract

The spatial arrangement of the Tenganan Dauh Tukad (TDT) settlement is perceived as the acculturation of Bali Aga (Old Bali) and Java Hindu Kingdom of Majapahit traditions. Accordingly, this study identifies the concepts, values, and philosophy behind residential space arrangement. Thus, this study enacted an interpretative approach. Data analysis was performed qualitatively in residential settings, i.e., culture, behavior, and spatial. This study demonstrated that the geometric construction of residential space in the TDT was formed in three manners. First, it blended the existing philosophy of harmony between the macrocosm and microcosm concepts. Second, the spatial arrangement of the TDT settlement adhered to the inward-oriented concept, with the village road as the central axis of village orientation. Third, cultural acculturation between the Bali Aga and Majapahit caused alterations in the settlement’s spatial orientation. This article contributes as a reference in creating traditional residential spaces that must consider socio-cultural aspects dynamically.

Abstract

Bali's economic landscape, intricately interwoven with tourism, integrates cultural-urban agriculture via the Subak system. Subak is an organization owned by the farmers in Bali that specifically regulates water management. The government has selected several Subak in urban area to become dynamic agricultural centers named Subak Lestari. The research explores farmer perspectives on urban agriculture tourism and offering insights for future sustainable urban agriculture and cultural tourism. This qualitative study is involving 23 farmers of Subak Lestari management and reflecting scores in technical (4.01), socio-cultural (3.87), economic (4.29), and environmental (4.32) aspects. These assessments underscore confidence in Subak Lestari's potential to catalyze a development in tourism-centric urban agriculture. Farmers seriously support positions of Subak Lestari as a potent force in reshaping urban agriculture. The study advocates for stakeholders to foster a sustainable fusion of traditional agriculture and tourism to safeguard agricultural spaces and ensuring urban farmers existence.
