Abstract

To achieve the goal of effective communication, participants in a conversation must adhere to the cooperative principle. This study aims to examine the maxims of cooperative principle applied by the characters in an animated film that depicts differences in the characters' life backgrounds. The chosen film provides a rich context for exploring how language functions in characters’ interactions across cultural differences, thus this could be interesting to analyze in this topic.  This study employed a qualitative method. The data were obtained through observation and note-taking techniques. The observation method involved watching the Elemental movie on Disney+ Hotstar. The note-taking technique involved manually transcribing the script and categorizing the utterances, in accordance with Grice's (1975) theory of cooperative principle and Halliday and Hasan's (1985) context of situation. The discussion revealed that all four maxims of cooperative principle were found in the characters' utterances in the film. There were 42 maxims found in total, divided into four categories: 8 quantity maxims, 20 quality maxims, 7 relation maxims, and 7 manner maxims. A speaker still fulfills the maxim of manner, even if the utterance conveyed is not that brief, because the speaker is still in shock from what they have just experienced. The most frequently used maxim is quality, which indicates that the characters adhere to the truthfulness of information, whereas the least utilized maxims are relation and manner, which could be due to the diverse perspectives from each character's life backgrounds. This study shows that Elemental demonstrates clarity in communication is not only about grammatical accuracy; it involves emotional awareness and intentional expression. It enhances the nurtures mutual understanding across the differences among the Elemental characters and a good character development.

Abstract

The effective expression of arguments in academic writing is largely shaped by rhetorical strategies, particularly hedges and boosters, which aid in managing certainty and engagement. This study employs a qualitative design with a corpus-based approach, utilizing 144 abstracts from bachelor's theses, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations in Indonesian language education. The abstracts were extracted, converted to text format, and organized into three corpora based on academic level. Using AntConc 4.1.4, softening and strengthening words were identified based on Hyland's (2005) grammatical classification and Hyland's (1998) pragmatic framework. The analysis included the identification of lexical words, calculation of their frequency, and interpretation of their use at various academic levels. To ensure validity, selected examples were analyzed qualitatively to reveal patterns of metadiscursive strategy use by students when presenting scientific claims. The findings indicate undergraduate and master's students primarily use hedges, particularly modal verbs like "can", "could", and "may" to express cautious claims, while doctoral students more frequently use boosters, especially lexical verbs such as "prove", "show", and "assert", reflecting greater assertiveness and confidence. Pragmatic analysis reveals that both hedges and boosters serve mainly accuracy- and writer-oriented functions, with limited reader-oriented use. These results suggest a rhetorical shift from cautious to assertive claims in line with academic maturity. The study highlights fostering students’ awareness of rhetorical strategies for effective scientific communication.

Abstract

Both the speaker and the interlocutor are aware that there are rules governing their actions, language use, and interpretation of the actions and utterances of the interlocutor. Each participant in the speech act is responsible for their actions and deviations from linguistic rules in the linguistic interaction. The purpose of this study is to describe violations of the principles of conversational cooperation and implicature found in the Spongebob Squarepants animated film episode Cinta Tetangga. The research method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive research method. This study was conducted by observing and then analyzing excerpts from the main character's conversations that contain violations of cooperation and implicatures found in the film. The results of this study four maxims were violated: the maxim of quantity with 5 instances of violation, the maxim of quality with 2 instances of violation, the maxim of relevance with 6 instances of violation, and the maxim of manner with 2 instances of violation. In addition to cooperation violations, implications were found regarding the violation of the four maxims. The implicature of the maxim of quantity includes providing information, expressing objection, informing, requesting assistance, and advising. The implicature of quality includes knowing the data and feeling afraid. The implicature of relevance includes diverting the conversation, following the data, refusing to assist, and informing about the data. Finally, the implicature of the maxim of manner includes covering up ignorance and covering up something.

Abstract

In modern marketing, advertisements act not only as promotional tools but also as cultural texts rich in symbolic meaning. This study analyzes how KFC’s Christmas-themed advertisements employ semiotic signs to convey messages of warmth, celebration, and consumer engagement. Using a qualitative descriptive method with an observational approach, the research examines both verbal elements such as slogans and greetings and non-verbal components like imagery, color, and festive symbols. The analysis draws on Saussure’s (1983) theory of signifier and signified, Barthes’ (1972) concept of cultural myths, and Wierzbicka’s (1996) interpretations of color symbolism. Findings reveal that KFC effectively integrates textual and visual signs, including images of a fried chicken Christmas tree, red festive backgrounds, seasonal icons, and warm greetings to evoke emotional responses. These signs work together to associate the brand with traditional holiday values such as joy, togetherness, and generosity. By embedding its product within a culturally resonant and emotionally charged framework, KFC enhances the persuasive power of its advertisements. This study highlights the significance of analyzing both verbal and non-verbal elements to fully understand how meaning is constructed in advertising. It contributes to semiotic and marketing literature by illustrating how advertisements function as multidimensional texts that connect commercial aims with cultural narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the existence of Korean language in public spaces in Bandung City through a Linguistic Landscape approach. Korean language is increasingly found in various public sectors, particularly in the culinary, beauty, non-formal education, and banking sectors. Data was collected through photographic documentation of signage in eight districts, which was then analyzed based on spatial distribution, language combination forms (monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual), and their socio-cultural functions. The findings reveal that Korean is not only used as a communication tool but also as a symbol of identity and cultural capital in public spaces. The patterns of combining Korean with Indonesian and English reflect marketing strategies, modernity, and symbolic values influenced by globalization and Korean popular culture. These findings confirm that the public spaces of Bandung serve as an arena for interaction between local and global values, reflecting the sociolinguistic dynamics of contemporary urban society.

Abstract

Language plays a crucial role in shaping political perception, especially when used strategically through rhetorical devices. Previous studies have often focused on the structural aspects of political language, but many tend to overlook how rhetoric is emotionally received and interpreted by audiences with different ideological backgrounds. This study aims to bridge that gap by examining how Donald Trump’s speeches apply rhetorical appeals of pathos, ethos, and logos, and how these appeals generate different public reactions. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach that focuses on interpreting meaning and persuasive strategies rather than measuring them numerically. Five major campaign and presidential speeches delivered between 2015 and 2021 were purposively chosen based on their rhetorical importance and audience impact. The data were collected from speech transcripts, audience reactions, and online comments, then analyzed using Herrick’s (2015) rhetorical theory and Garrett’s (2010) language attitude theory. The analysis went through three stages: data reduction, classification of rhetorical appeals, and interpretation of audience responses. The data were examined manually through careful reading and interpretation to maintain consistency and ensure the credibility and replicability of the research. The findings show that emotionally charged expressions trigger strong emotional and behavioral responses from Trump’s supporters, while also provoking skepticism and opposition from his critics. Ethos-based statements strengthen perceived credibility and loyalty even without factual evidence, and logos-based arguments simplify complex political issues into clear and relatable messages that shape public perception. In conclusion, Trump’s rhetorical strategies work not only as persuasive tools but also as means of identity building and ideological polarization. By combining theoretical perspectives and real audience responses, this study highlights political rhetoric as both a linguistic force and a sociocultural influence.

Abstract

This study investigates linguistic politeness issues in communication between children aged 6–12 years and their parents in Ngarap-ngarap Village, Wonogiri, employing Geoffrey Leech’s pragmatic framework. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and observations of 12 families to identify forms of politeness, causes of violations, and their impacts on family relationships. Findings indicate that children predominantly use boso kromo inggil, reflecting Javanese cultural norms, but violations occur due to peer influence, adolescent emotions, and digital media exposure, particularly breaching the maxims of approbation and agreement. Politeness fosters emotional closeness and family harmony, whereas violations cause temporary emotional tension. Linguistic factors (diction, speech acts), social factors (peer influence, Javanese culture), and technology shape these issues. The study underscores the need for linguistic politeness education integrating unggah-ungguh and digital literacy to strengthen family bonds and preserve cultural values.

Abstract

The film Farha (2021) tells the story of a deep emotional relationship between a father and his daughter against the background of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian settlements, in a major event that gripped and became a dark memory of the Palestinian people known as the Nakba. Farha's movie provides rich interpretative potential related to identity formation in the psychoanalytic realm. This research aims to reveal the emotional relationship between Farha and her father, in forming the objectivity structure of the main character through Lacan's miror stage concept. The research method was descriptive qualitative, employing Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic approach. Data were collected through repeated viewings of the film, noting key scenes, dialogue, gestures, and symbols. Data were then analyzed by grouping the scenes into the Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real domains, in accordance with Lacan's theory. The results of this study show that the father figure in the film functions double: as a mirror of ideal identity and ego (the realm of the imaginary), as a representative of symbolic norms and laws (the realm of the symbolic), and as a source of existential wounds in traumatic experiences (the realm of the Real). This finding implies that cinematic works such as Farha's film are effective as a reflective field to understand individual psychological dynamics shaped by family, symbolic and trauma forces, and supports the development of interdisciplinary studies based on humanities and psychoanalysis.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the most dominant characteristics of romanticism in a collection of Madurese song lyrics uploaded to Fajar Syahid's YouTube channel. This study was motivated by the limited research on the aesthetic and emotional values in regional songs, especially Madurese songs. The focus of the study is on the three most dominant characteristics of romanticism, namely melancholy or gloom, sentimentality, and individualism. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a romanticism approach. The data sources were 15 Madurese song lyrics selected through a reduction technique and categorized based on six characteristics of romanticism, namely return to nature, gloom or melancholy, primitivism, sentimentality, individualism, and exoticism. The analysis was carried out by identifying, interpreting, and describing lyrics that reflect the characteristics of romanticism. The results of the study show 42 instances of romanticism, including melancholy (14), sentimentality (15), individualism (7), return to nature (1), exoticism (2), and primitivism (3). These findings show that the most dominant characteristics are melancholy, sentimentality, and individualism. Melancholy is depicted through expressions of deep sadness and loss; sentimentality through outbursts of love and excessive longing; and individualism through characters who tend to be reclusive and bottle up their feelings. The results of the study confirm that Madurese song lyrics not only serve as entertainment, but also represent literary value and emotional depth that are relevant to be studied as part of the local literary heritage based on regional culture.
