Abstract

Abstract Radio communication plays a vital role in engine room operations, where accurate delivery of technical information is essential for ship safety and efficiency. However, engine cadets often experience communication anxiety when reporting machinery conditions through radio systems, particularly under operational pressure. This study aims to examine the effect of communication anxiety on radio communication accuracy among engine cadets, with self-efficacy serving as a mediating variable. This study employed a quantitative explanatory research design involving approximately 100 engine cadets. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to measure communication anxiety and self-efficacy, as well as performance-based assessments of radio communication accuracy conducted through simulated normal and emergency engine room scenarios. The data were analyzed using mediation analysis through regression procedures. The findings reveal that communication anxiety has a significant negative effect on self-efficacy and radio communication accuracy. Self-efficacy demonstrates a significant positive influence on communication accuracy and partially mediates the relationship between communication anxiety and communication accuracy. These results indicate that psychological readiness plays a crucial role in technical radio communication performance among engine cadets. This study contributes to maritime education by emphasizing the importance of integrating psychological factors, particularly self-efficacy development, into engine cadets’ radio communication training to enhance accuracy and operational safety. Abstract

This study investigates the structural mechanisms of socioeconomic dominance and gender dynamics in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. While previous research focuses heavily on macro-thematic or general feminist readings, there is a lack of systematic inquiry into how microtextual elements actively build and subvert these power structures. To fill this research gap, this study applies Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotic theory by analyzing the relationships between representamen, object, and interpretant across icons, indices, and symbols to decode physical assets, nominal values, and social behaviors within the text. Using a qualitative design based on document analysis and close reading, twenty key extracts were examined following the qualitative interactive framework of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal that quantifiable assets and elite landscapes, such as annual incomes and the Pemberley estate, operate as potent indexical signs that establish and legitimize class stratification. Concurrently, Regency social conventions and patriarchal inheritance laws function as rigid symbolic signs designed to enforce female submission. However, the semiotic interplay ultimately uncovers a powerful counter-narrative of resistance, where the heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, actively subverts these codes. By demanding to be treated as a rational creature, she activates the female gaze as a counter-power that validates female autonomy and dismantles patriarchal hegemony. This study concludes that operationalizing formal triadic semiotics can reveal deep, hidden ideological meanings about gender, wealth, and systemic control within classic realist literature.

Abstract

Abstract

In Maritime English classrooms, first-year cadets often encounter difficulties in adjusting from general English vocabulary to specialized maritime terminology. Although they possess basic English proficiency, many cadets are not yet familiar with maritime-specific terms whose meanings differ from everyday usage. Consequently, they must relearn and internalize new lexical items as part of their professional language development. This situation highlights the need for classroom support to facilitate terminology transition in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts. This study aims to examine the types of interactional scaffolding employed by a lecturer in Maritime English classrooms and to explore how such scaffolding supports first-year deck cadets in developing maritime terminology. This research adopted a descriptive qualitative design involving one lecturer and first-year deck cadets at PIP Makassar. Data were collected through classroom video recordings and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the lecturer employed various scaffolding strategies, including contextual framing, elicitation, repetition, clarification, and guided correction. These strategies were effective in assisting cadets to recognize differences between general English and maritime terminology and to gradually replace familiar vocabulary with appropriate maritime terms. The scaffolding process encouraged active participation and supported the development of lexical awareness in specialized maritime contexts.Interview findings further indicate that cadets perceived scaffolding strategies as supportive and helpful in enhancing their confidence and independent terminology use. The study concludes that interactional scaffolding plays a significant role in facilitating maritime terminology development in early-stage Maritime English classrooms.
