Journal of Noesantara Islamic Studies is dedicated to bringing together the latest and most important results and perspectives from field of Islamic studies, devoting to provide an intellectual niche of new Islamic trends in society and beyond. The Journal of Noesantara Islamic Studies is a highly selective journal; submissions must be both essential reading for a particular sub-field and of interest to the broader papers from academicians on theories, philosophy, conceptual paradigms, academic research, as well as religion practices. In particular, papers which consider the following general topics are invited with the expectation for lasting scientific and technological impact. We therefore anticipate that only a small proportion of submissions to the Journal of Noesantara Islamic Studies will be selected for publication. We feel that the rapidly growing Journal of Noesantara Islamic Studies community is looking for a journal with this profile, and one that together we can achieve. Submitted papers must be written in English for initial review stage by editors and further review process by minimum two international reviewers.

Abstract

This study examines the harmonization of religious and indigenous values within the Banua community in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. The research aims to explore how Islamic teachings are interpreted, practiced, and transmitted through adat (customary traditions) in everyday social life. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in interpretative phenomenological and hermeneutic perspectives, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving customary leaders, religious figures, ritual practitioners, and community members. The findings reveal that religious values and adat function as complementary systems rather than competing frameworks. Islamic moral principles are embedded within customary norms, rituals, and communal practices, enabling religion to remain culturally resonant and socially meaningful. Cultural rituals such as Puncak Rasul and Terbangan (Hadrah) play a crucial role as media for value integration and intergenerational transmission. The novelty of this study lies in its empirical demonstration of harmonization as a lived, dialogical process within an underrepresented indigenous community in Kalimantan. The study implies that culturally grounded religious practices can strengthen social cohesion, cultural resilience, and moral continuity in plural societies.

Abstract

The rise of global radicalism in recent decades has posed significant challenges to the integrity and peace of the Muslim community. In response to this, Islamic organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) have become pivotal in promoting Islam Wasatiyyah, or moderate Islam, as an antidote to extremism. NU’s unique position in Indonesia and its global influence present an opportunity to examine its role in counteracting radical ideologies. This study aims to explore the contributions of Nahdlatul Ulama in promoting Islam Wasatiyyah as a counter-narrative to the growing threat of global radicalism. It investigates how NU’s teachings and activities advocate for moderation, tolerance, and inclusivity in Islamic practices. This qualitative study employs a literature review and content analysis of key NU texts, official statements, and related theological works. Interviews with NU scholars and activists further enrich the understanding of NU’s strategies in promoting a moderate Islam. The findings suggest that NU’s emphasis on the middle path of Islam has provided a strong theological foundation against radical ideologies. Through its educational programs, interfaith dialogues, and advocacy for pluralism, NU has successfully advocated for Islam Wasatiyyah as a key component of peace-building efforts. Nahdlatul Ulama plays a significant role in fostering a moderate interpretation of Islam, thereby offering an effective counter-narrative to global radicalism. Its efforts are crucial in the global fight against extremism.

Abstract

The development of an ethical and moral–based learning culture is a core mission of Islamic elementary education, particularly at the upper-grade level where students experience significant cognitive and character formation. In many madrasah ibtidaiyah, learning practices still prioritize academic achievement, while ethical values and moral behavior are often taught implicitly and inconsistently. This condition necessitates a more systematic approach to embedding ethical and moral principles within everyday learning culture. This study aims to analyze the process of building an ethical and moral–based learning culture among Grade VI students at MI Darul Muhtadin, Talango District, Sumenep Regency, East Java, and to examine its influence on students’ learning attitudes and social behavior. This research employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers, school leaders, and students, as well as analysis of school documents. The data were analyzed thematically to identify strategies, patterns, and outcomes of moral and ethical habituation. The findings reveal that ethical and moral values were effectively fostered through teacher role modeling, routine religious and character-building activities, integrative instructional practices, and consistent enforcement of school norms. These efforts resulted in observable improvements in students’ discipline, respectfulness, responsibility, and cooperative learning behavior. Establishing an ethical and moral–based learning culture requires intentional integration of values into pedagogy, school routines, and institutional policies to support sustainable character development among students.

Abstract

The community of believers in the One Almighty God in Indonesia has undergone significant transformation, especially after the legal recognition through the Constitutional Court ruling in 2017. This transformation not only covers social, cultural, and economic aspects, but also involves changes in the structure of collective identity and negotiation of their position amidst the dominance of the majority religion. This article analyzes the transformation process through a sociological approach, referring to the theories of functionalism, social conflict, and symbolic interaction. The main focus includes identity dynamics, social interaction patterns, integration challenges, and the role of belief organizations in preserving local traditions while adapting to modern norms. This analysis also highlights how legal recognition has opened up space for believers to strengthen their position in society, although challenges such as social stigma and marginalization are still faced. This transformation, ultimately, reflects efforts to create social harmony and maintain diversity in a pluralistic Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics and civilization of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago, focusing on intercultural interactions that shaped the region's social and cultural structures. Islam, which arrived through trade and da'wah (Islamic preaching), played a significant role in shaping civilization in the Indonesian archipelago through the exchange of knowledge and technology, as well as the adaptation of local cultures. The significant contributions of Muslim scholars in mathematics, medicine, and philosophy also influenced the development of science in the Indonesian archipelago. Meanwhile, cultural interactions between Islam and local cultures resulted in acculturation that enriched the Indonesian archipelago's artistic and cultural heritage, such as performing arts and gamelan music. This study uses a qualitative approach using literature study methods and historical analysis to explore how Islamic civilization adapted and developed in the Indonesian archipelago, as well as how it influenced local social, legal, and cultural structures. In conclusion, Islamic civilization in the Indonesian archipelago was not limited to religious aspects but also encompassed the interconnected social, economic, and cultural spheres that shaped the identity of the Indonesian Muslim community.

Abstract

Inheritance in the Minangkabau community of West Sumatra represents a complex legal phenomenon that reflects the coexistence and tension between fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), adat (customary law), and state law. This study aims to analyze how these three normative systems interact, overlap, and negotiate authority in resolving inheritance disputes among Minangkabau people. Using a qualitative sociolegal approach, the research was conducted through indepth interviews, field observations, and document analysis of inheritance cases handled by both adat institutions and religious courts. The findings reveal that inheritance practices in Minangkabau are shaped by a hybrid legal culture: adat prioritizes matrilineal lineage and communal ownership, fiqh emphasizes individual entitlement based on Qur’anic prescriptions, while state law seeks harmonization through formal judicial mechanisms. In practice, local communities often employ adat principles for land and property distribution but rely on fiqhbased settlements when disputes escalate to formal courts. The study concludes that the coexistence of these systems demonstrates a dynamic legal pluralism, where social harmony is maintained through pragmatic compromise rather than rigid adherence to a single legal framework.

Abstract

Background: The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed the landscape of religious communication in Muslim societies, challenging long-established patterns of religious authority that have traditionally been male-dominated. In this context, women ulama increasingly utilize digital platforms to disseminate knowledge, engage audiences, and negotiate their religious legitimacy within both local and transnational Muslim communities. Objective: This study aims to examine how women ulama in the digital era redefine religious authority, reshape modes of da‘wah, and construct new forms of credibility and influence in Muslim communities. Method: The research employs a qualitative approach, combining digital ethnography, content analysis of selected social media platforms, and in-depth interviews with prominent women ulama actively engaged in online religious discourse. Results: The findings reveal that digital spaces enable women ulama to bypass conventional institutional barriers, articulate alternative religious narratives, and build authority through expertise, ethical engagement, and interactive communication with followers. However, their authority remains contested, as they often face gender-based resistance, online harassment, and challenges from traditional religious institutions. Conclusion: The study concludes that digital media does not merely extend existing religious authority but actively reconfigures it, positioning women ulama as significant agents in the evolving ecology of Islamic knowledge and leadership in the digital era.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has significantly influenced the learning patterns and characteristics of the digital generation, including in the context of Arabic language learning. Traditional learning approaches, which are still one-way and limited to conventional media, are considered inadequate to meet the learning needs of today's students. This situation drives the need for innovation through the development of Arabic language learning media integrated with technology. This study aims to design technology-based Arabic language learning media that are appropriate to the characteristics of the digital generation and to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of their use in the learning process. The method applied is research and development (R&D), including the stages of needs analysis, media design, product development, expert validation, and limited trials on students. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires, observations, and learning outcome tests, while data analysis used descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results of the study indicate that the technology-based Arabic language learning media developed received a very good rating from material and media experts. Furthermore, the implementation of this media has been proven to increase student motivation and learning achievement. These findings confirm that the integration of technology in Arabic language learning media can create a more interactive, engaging, and relevant learning process to meet the needs of the digital generation.

Abstract

This study explores the evolving role of Qur’anic interpretation (tafsir) within the context of modernity and its significance for contemporary Islamic thought. Modern intellectual, social, and ethical transformations have generated new questions regarding the authority, methodology, and relevance of classical exegetical traditions, making tafsir a crucial site of engagement between revelation and changing realities. The objective of this research is to examine how tafsir functions as an intellectual mediator that enables Islamic thought to respond to modern epistemological and societal challenges while maintaining continuity with the Qur’anic tradition. The study employs a qualitative research design based on textual and interpretive analysis of selected classical and contemporary tafsir works that explicitly engage with modern issues. Hermeneutical and conceptual frameworks are used to analyze interpretive patterns, methodological orientations, and thematic emphases. The findings reveal that contemporary tafsir demonstrates significant methodological diversity, with a growing emphasis on contextualization, ethical reasoning, and thematic interpretation. Tafsir emerges not as a static tradition but as a dynamic intellectual practice that actively shapes modern Islamic discourse. The study concludes that tafsir plays a central role in negotiating the relationship between Islam and modernity, serving as a bridge between sacred text and contemporary thought.

Abstract

Islamic education has long served as a central institution for transmitting religious knowledge, moral values, and collective norms within Muslim societies. In contemporary contexts marked by globalization, social diversity, and identity contestation, the role of Islamic education in shaping social identity has gained renewed scholarly attention. This study aims to examine how Islamic education contributes to the formation of religious identity, social belonging, and civic orientation in contemporary Muslim societies. The research employed a quantitative cross-sectional design involving students from Islamic educational institutions across diverse social settings. Data were collected using validated questionnaires measuring educational exposure, religious identity, ethical orientation, and social engagement, and were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings indicate that Islamic education significantly influences social identity formation by strengthening religious self-understanding, promoting shared moral values, and fostering a sense of communal belonging. Positive associations were also found between Islamic education and civic engagement, suggesting an integrative identity orientation rather than social withdrawal. The study concludes that Islamic education functions as a multidimensional socializing process that mediates between religious tradition and contemporary social realities.
