Abstract

In the digital era, social media platforms offer expansive opportunities for language learning beyond the traditional classroom. Among these, TikTok emerges as a dynamic tool that fosters authentic language use through short video creation and interactive engagement. Grounded in sociocultural theory and social constructivism, this paper explores the potential of TikTok as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) resource to support Learning Beyond the Classroom (LBC) for junior high EFL students. While existing studies acknowledge the positive influence of social media on English learning, limited attention has been given to the implementation of TikTok in fostering speaking skills outside formal learning environments. Addressing this gap, the study proposes a pedagogical framework integrating TikTok-based speaking materials, including a speaking worksheet and a detailed lesson plan aligned with the curriculum and learner context. The design aims to bridge in-class instruction with out-of-class practice, enhancing learner autonomy and communicative competence. The paper further discusses the theoretical underpinnings, design process, practical applications, and potential challenges of using TikTok for EFL instruction, offering actionable insights for language educators seeking to expand the scope of language learning beyond classroom boundaries.

Abstract

This essay explores the need for a more inclusive cultural representation in English language teaching (ELT) materials in Indonesia, particularly for high school students. Drawing from personal experience and supported by relevant theories and studies, I question the dominant focus on English-speaking countries’ cultures in textbooks, despite the fact that most English communication today occurs among non-native speakers, especially within the ASEAN region. Using Byram’s (1997) Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) framework, I analyze how language and culture are deeply connected and argue for the inclusion of ASEAN cultures in ELT to better reflect learners' real communication needs. A textbook analysis based on research by Setyono and Widodo (2019) reveals a lack of ASEAN cultural content and limited opportunities for learners to critically engage with different cultural perspectives. The paper ends with practical recommendations for improving textbook content and teacher development, so learners can develop not just language skills but also the intercultural competence necessary for today's global and regional communication contexts.

Abstract

This paper explores the importance of implementing critical literacy in teaching and learning activities for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners in Indonesia, especially in today’s digital world where misinformation spreads easily. The highlights three major benefits of critical literacy: enhancing student’s critical awareness, enabling deeper examination of texts within social and cultural contexts, and recognizing the crucial role of teacher readiness in its application. Although there are challenges—like students coming from different backgrounds and limited support for teachers—the paper suggests that with the right strategies and support, both students and teachers can benefit from bringing critical literacy into the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of self-disclosure and social media addiction on social anxiety in emerging adult users of Instagram's close friends feature among students in Semarang, in accordance with the formulation of the problem which aims to determine whether the two independent variables have a significant effect on the dependent variable. This study uses a quantitative method and a sample of 176 students, the study collected data through an online questionnaire (google form) with a Likert scale and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results show that social media addiction has a significant effect on social anxiety (p <0.05, coefficient 0.5138), while self-disclosure does not have a significant effect, with the majority of respondents in the moderate category to the third variable. This study proves that social media addiction has an important role in increasing social anxiety in emerging adults in the digital era, contributing to understanding the psychological dynamics of social media users.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation between interpersonal intelligence and English language skills of students of the Pharmacy Department of SMK Yadika Palu. The approach used was quantitative with a correlation method, involving a sample of 30 class XI Pharmacy students selected by purposive sampling. The instruments used in this research consisted of a questionnaire to measure students' interpersonal intelligence and a speaking test to assess English speaking ability. The data were analysed through several stages, including the normality test and Pearson Product-Moment correlation test processed using SPSS version 26 for Windows. The results of the normality test showed that the data were normally distributed, and the Pearson correlation test showed a significant and positive correlation between interpersonal intelligence and English-speaking ability, with a correlation coefficient of 0.776 and a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This correlation is categorised as a high correlation. In addition, 60.3% of the variance in English-speaking ability can be explained by the interpersonal intelligence variable. These findings indicate that the higher the level of interpersonal intelligence possessed by students, the better their English speaking ability.

Abstract

Grammar mastery is considered an important foundation in constructing proper and communicative sentences. Based on that, this study aimed to find out whether there is a correlation between students' mastery of grammar and their speaking ability. This research used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 31 grade X students who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that there was a high correlation between students' grammar mastery and their speaking ability. The significance value of 0.000 is below the significance level of 0.05, and the correlation coefficient (r) value of 0.776 is greater than the r table value, which is 0.3550. This means the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. It is shown that the higher the students' mastery of grammar, the better their speaking ability. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students’ speaking skills of the tenth-grade students at MAN 2 Palu in the academic year 2024/2025.

Abstract

The use of crossword puzzles has been widely used in paper-based forms; in this study, the use of crossword puzzles is integrated with digital technology. This form offers more interactive and engaging alternatives than traditional paper-based formats. This research was conducted at MAN 2 Palu. The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of the use of online Crossword Puzzles as a tool for learning vocabulary in the tenth-grade students of MAN 2 Palu. This research applied a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. There were two classes: Experimental class (XE), which was taught by online Crossword Puzzles, and the control class, which was taught by the conventional method. The total number of students was 35 in each class. The instrument used in this research was a test in the form of multiple choice, translation, matching words and a cloze test. The test was divided into pre-test and post-test to investigate the students’ vocabulary mastery in the experimental and control classes before and after treatment. The result of the research showed that the use of online Crossword Puzzles improved students' vocabulary mastery significantly. It can be seen that the result of the T-test (16.370) was higher than the T-table (2.032). Based on the data analysis, it can be confirmed that H0 is rejected, and Ha is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of online Crossword Puzzles is effective as a vocabulary learning tool for the tenth-grade students of MAN 2 Palu.

Abstract

This article is a literature review that connects three hot topics in politeness research: cross-cultural pragmatics, online discourse, and computational approaches. The core article draws on Nurjaleka et al. (2021), who discussed how Japanese and Javanese speakers perceive politeness differently. They found that Japanese speakers emphasize honorifics and Javanese speakers emphasize indirectness. However, this study was based on survey data rather than discourse analysis. Kavanagh (2016), on the other hand, demonstrated how bloggers in American and Japanese communities use emoticons to convey kindness and establish supportive identities in online interactions. However, the findings were limited to a small sample and specific to one platform. In contrast, a computer study by Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil et al. (2013) actually broadened the field of politeness research by automatically identifying signals in millions of communications, including modal verbs, greetings, and expressions of thanks. Recent studies have shown how machine learning can enhance politeness classification while also revealing cultural subtleties (e.g., Priya, Firdaus, & Ekbal, 2024; Aljanaideh et al., 2025). When paired with existing studies, it shows distinct gaps and complementary strengths. In short, online research emphasizes multimodal identity construction, computational work enables scalability, and cross-cultural studies provide a cultural foundation. Future research is expected to fully encompass all these perspectives. Keywords: literature review, politeness, identity, online discourse, cross-cultural pragmatics, computational linguistics

Abstract

Internet-based technologies have greatly changed the field of education, especially in Indonesian higher education. Some schools have chosen a hybrid approach by integrating online learning, which gradually enhances the adoption of blended learning in the classroom. This study investigates how the EFL pre-service teachers in Indonesia perceive their experience as a teacher who uses a blended learning strategy in their teaching practicum program. The participants were some pre-service teachers from Islamic State Colleges in Indonesia who implemented blended learning strategy in their teaching practicum programs. The research design used in this study is a qualitative study, and the data collection method is a semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis in accordance with the TPACK as the theoretical framework by Koehler and Mishra. The findings indicated that the online learning component of blended learning facilitated both pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy improvement and their flexibility in choosing the teaching platforms, teaching time and place depending on their needs. However, the pre-service teachers faced challenges such as technical problems, limited resources, and face-to-face teaching preference. Considering the complexity of blended teaching practice, the scope of this study is very limited. Therefore, future research may need to explore how pre-service teachers' technical, pedagogical, and subject expertise interact with their teaching experiences.
