This research goal is for showing the meaning of pragmatic, implicature, assumption, and also the strategy of speech acts that emerge from the use of the color symbol in the lyrics. By using a qualitative approach to pragmatic discourse analysis, this research uses Yule’s context theory, Grice’s implicature, Leech’s principles of politeness, Searle's speech acts, and Karttunen's assumptions in analyzing data in the form of official lyrics. The results of this research show that “Mejikuhibiniu” functions as an emotional marker that represents a shift in relationships from happiness into betrayal and emotional breakdown. In addition, found implicatures of jealousy and manipulation, assumptions of exclusive relationships, speech acts expressive based on emotion intentions, also strategy of color metaphor that smooth and sharpen the critic speaker to the conflict of love. Thus, this study confirms that the changes of symbols and culture in popular music show pragmatic dynamics that influence the social growth and psychologic modern speaker. Abstract

Using Searle’s (1979) Speech Acts framework and Elwood’s (2004) Semantic formulas, this study investigates how condolences are expressed differently in four grief-related scenarios by both British and Indonesian. The data were collected through a Discourse Completion task (DCT) completed by 10 Indonesian participants and 10 British participants. The finding shows that while Indonesian participants rely most on religious expression and future-oriented remarks, British predominantly employ expressions of sympathy and offer assistance. Both groups demonstrate similarities in using personal questions and empathetic comments. However, the variation occurs based on closeness of the relationship. This result highlights the cultural sensitivity of condolence expressions and the importance of understanding cross cultural communicative strategies in emotionally charged interactions.

Abstract

This study examines the use of politeness strategies in Laufey’s utterances in two podcast interviews, Q with Tom Power and Royal Court with Brittany Broski, based on Leech’s Politeness Principle (1983). Grounded in pragmatic analysis, this research examines how politeness functions not only as a linguistic norm but also as a strategic resource for self-presentation in public digital discourse. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, 80 utterances were analyzed, revealing 87 realizations of politeness maxims. The findings show that four of Leech’s six maxims are employed, namely modesty (47 instances), approbation (19), agreement (12), and tact (9). The dominance of the modesty maxim indicates a consistent tendency to minimize self-praise, even when discussing professional achievements. Drawing on Goffman’s framework of self-presentation, these strategies function as forms of impression management, enabling the construction of a controlled, approachable, and professional public persona. This study highlights politeness as a strategic linguistic resource in shaping self-presentation within contemporary podcast discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of social media in improving digital literacy practices among parents in the digital era. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to gain a deeper understanding of parents’ experiences, perceptions, and habits in using social media. The research subjects consisted of parents actively using social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that social media significantly contributes to improving parents’ digital literacy by increasing their ability to use digital features, access information, and understand digital security and privacy. Social media also serves as an informal learning medium through online communities and parenting groups that facilitate knowledge sharing and interaction. However, several challenges remain, including difficulties in distinguishing valid information from misinformation and limited technological understanding among some parents. Family support, especially from children, also contributes positively to improving parents’ digital skills. Therefore, continuous education and guidance are needed to ensure parents use social media wisely, safely, and effectively.

Abstract

The development of social media in the digital era has transformed patterns of social interaction, especially among Generation Z who have grown up with digital technology. TikTok, as a short-video-based platform, functions not only as an entertainment medium but also as a space for emotional expression and symbolic communication. One emerging form of interaction is reposting activity, which refers to resharing content perceived as relevant to users’ personal emotional conditions. This study aims to analyze digital interaction patterns through TikTok reposting and their relationship with Generation Z’s emotional conditions. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving five Generation Z informants who are active TikTok users. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by source triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that reposting is not merely a content-sharing activity but carries deeper psychological meaning. It functions as indirect self-expression, emotional regulation, and a form of social validation seeking within digital spaces. Reposted content reflects users’ emotional states such as sadness, anxiety, psychological pressure, as well as positive emotions. This activity generates psychological effects including emotional relief, social connectedness, and emotional fluctuations influenced by responses received from other users in social media environments.

Abstract

Trauma is often represented in films through memory, emotional distance, and fragmented storytelling rather than direct explanation. This study aims to analyze how trauma is represented through fragmented memory in Charlotte Wells' Aftersun (2022) by using Cathy Caruth's trauma theory. The study applies a qualitative descriptive method with a film studies approach. The primary data source is Aftersun (2022), while the data consists of scenes, dialogues, visual elements, and cinematic techniques related to trauma representation. The data were collected through repeated viewing, note-taking, and scene selection. The analysis focuses on Caruth's concepts of unclaimed experience, belatedness, and repetition. The findings show that trauma in Aftersun (2022) is represented through fragmented memories that gradually reveal emotional meaning. Through the use of camcorder footage, silence, visual repetition, spatial separation, and fragmented editing, the film portrays trauma as an unresolved experience that cannot be fully understood when it occurs. The study also finds that Sophie reconstructs her understanding of her father through retrospective interpretation, allowing traumatic meaning to emerge over time. Therefore, Aftersun (2022) represents trauma not through direct narrative explanation but through fragmented memory and cinematic form.

Abstract

This article examines Alex Rose's self-actualisation journey in Adam Brooks's film The Life List (2025) through Scott Barry Kaufman's contemporary theory of human needs. The study focuses on how Alex's internal conflicts create tensions between security needs and growth needs, and how her development later moves toward transcendence. Using a qualitative film analysis and close reading method, the data were taken from selected dialogues, scenes, subtitles, and narrative events that reveal Alex's psychological development. The analysis shows that Alex's dependence on her mother, fear of leaving her comfort zone, identity crisis after learning the truth about her biological father, disappointment with Johnny, and conflict with Garrett function as turning points in her movement toward self-understanding. These conflicts reveal unstable security needs, especially safety, connection, and self-esteem, while gradually opening the possibility of growth through exploration, love, and purpose. The article further finds that Alex's journey does not end in personal fulfilment. Her growth develops toward transcendence when she shares her mother's messages with her brothers, reconciles with Samuel, accepts grief, and forms a broader community of love and meaning. The film therefore represents self-actualisation as a dynamic, relational, and non-linear process rather than a final achievement.

Abstract

Within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), clause complex relations play an important role in organizing information and constructing meaning in discourse. While previous studies have primarily focused on identifying and classifying clause complex patterns, limited attention has been given to how such grammatical choices reflect communicative purposes in news reporting. Therefore, this study investigates the clause complex structures employed in CNN and Reuters news reports concerning the trade agreement between Indonesia and the United States. Specifically, the study aims to identify interdependency relations and logical-semantic relations, compare the clause complex patterns used by both news organizations, and explain how these patterns reflect different journalistic communication strategies. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzed two online news reports through Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) clause complex framework. The findings revealed that hypotaxis was the dominant interdependency relation, occurring 34 times in CNN and 10 times in Reuters, while enhancement and projection: locution were the most frequent logical-semantic relations, each occurring 19 times. The results suggest that both news organizations employed clause complex structures to contextualize events and support source attribution. However, CNN utilized more hypotactic constructions and contextual explanations, indicating a tendency toward explanatory reporting, whereas Reuters emphasized concise reporting through direct presentation of facts and official statements. These findings demonstrate that clause complex relations function not only as grammatical resources but also as strategic communicative tools through which journalists organize information and shape audience interpretation. The study contributes to clause complex research by extending the analysis from structural description to the examination of communicative functions in international news discourse. This study contributes to media discourse studies by demonstrating that clause complex relations function not only as grammatical resources but also as strategic communicative tools that shape audience interpretation in economic news reporting.

Abstract

News discourse employs various grammatical features to organize information, establish textual cohesion, and convey meaning effectively. This study aims to identify and compare the grammatical features used in two news articles discussing Indonesia–United States trade relations published by The Jakarta Post and Reuters. The analysis focuses on four grammatical features, namely derivational forms, connecting relationships, expletive it and there, and descriptive adjectives. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using document analysis. The data consisted of grammatical features identified in the selected news articles, which were analyzed based on theories proposed by Yule and Bauer for derivational forms, Halliday and Hasan for connecting relationships, Quirk et al. for expletive constructions, and Greenbaum and Nelson for descriptive adjectives. The findings revealed that derivational forms were the most frequently used grammatical feature in both articles, followed by descriptive adjectives and connecting relationships, while expletive constructions occurred only rarely. The Reuters article contained a slightly higher frequency of grammatical features than The Jakarta Post article, indicating a greater use of lexical and structural complexity. The results suggest that grammatical features contribute significantly to the clarity, cohesion, and effectiveness of news discourse. This study provides insights into how different news media employ grammatical resources to present economic and political information and contributes to the broader understanding of language use in contemporary journalistic writing.
