Abstract

Chemistry learning requires students not only to understand abstract concepts but also to engage in scientific activities that form the foundation of science process skills; therefore, instructional innovations that support concept visualization and foster inquiry are essential. In this context, the present study aims to analyze research trends on the use of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) chemistry comic media to enhance students’ science process skills during the period 2016–2025. This study employed a descriptive–analytical method using a bibliometric approach by examining 1,000 Google Scholar–indexed documents with the assistance of Publish or Perish and Dimensions AI to identify publication patterns, dominant keywords, and the most influential journal sources. The findings indicate a significant increase in publications since 2022, with both print and digital comics emerging as effective media for visualizing chemical concepts and supporting scientific work within PjBL. These findings align with Bruner’s constructivism and Paivio’s Dual Coding Theory, which emphasize the importance of visual representation and authentic learning experiences. The study concludes that integrating chemistry comics with PjBL has strong theoretical and empirical legitimacy as an approach capable of strengthening students’ science process skills. Practically, the results suggest the need for more systematic implementation of comics and PjBL in science curricula to support creative, contextual, and scientifically literate learning

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of gender on academic achievement and career aspirations among secondary school students in Bauchi Metropolis, Bauchi State. The objectives were to determine the career aspirations of male and female students, examine their perceptions regarding career choices, assess the relationship between gender and career aspirations, and identify the influence of gender stereotypes on academic achievement and career decisions. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised students from ten public senior secondary schools, while a sample of 306 respondents was selected using sampling techniques. Data were collected using a structured close-ended questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics involving Pearson Product Moment Correlation at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed a significant relationship between gender and career aspirations, with gender stereotypes influencing students’ academic achievement and occupational preferences. Male students showed stronger inclination toward STEM-related careers, while female students preferred caregiving and social service professions. The study concludes that gender remains a key determinant of academic and career outcomes among secondary school students in Bauchi Metropolis. The study recommends the strengthening of school-based career guidance services and the training of teachers as career mentors to support students in making informed, stereotype-free career decisions

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of counselling services on the academic performance of students in public senior secondary schools in Plateau State, Nigeria. The research was driven by the increasing recognition of counselling as a crucial intervention for addressing students’ academic, psychological, and social challenges, thereby fostering better educational outcomes. Specifically, the study investigated the influence of four key categories of counselling services; preventive, crisis, rehabilitative, and referral on students’ academic performance. Using a descriptive survey research design, the researcher collected data from a sample of 370 students selected through random sampling from fifteen public senior secondary schools in Plateau State. Out of these, 353 valid responses were analyzed using both descriptive statistics and inferential techniques, including multiple regression analysis, to determine the strength and significance of the relationships between counselling services and academic performance. The hypothesis testing revealed that all four categories of counselling services had a statistically significant positive effect on students’ academic performance (p < 0.05). Specifically, referral counselling services exhibited the strongest influence with a standardized beta coefficient (β) of 0.45 (p < 0.01), indicating that increased access to referral services could substantially improve academic outcomes. Rehabilitative counselling followed with a β of 0.32 (p < 0.01), suggesting that rehabilitative support plays a vital role in enhancing academic success. Crisis counselling also demonstrated a significant impact with a β of 0.28 (p < 0.05), while preventive counselling showed a positive but comparatively modest effect (β = 0.21, p < 0.05). The results suggest that targeted interventions, especially referral and rehabilitative services, are instrumental in addressing students’ individual needs and promoting academic performance. The study concludes that the effective implementation of well-structured counselling programs, supported by qualified counsellors and adequate resources, is essential for improving educational outcomes. The study therefore recommends that government and educational authorities prioritize the expansion and strengthening of counselling services in secondary schools. This includes employing trained personnel, providing necessary facilities, and increasing awareness among students about the availability and benefits of counselling, thereby fostering not only improved academic performance but also supporting students’ overall psychological and social well-being

Abstract

Bariq Shafiee (1931–2016) is among the founders of modern poetry in Afghanistan and one of the most influential figures of Dari Persian poetry in the twentieth century. The publication of 'Stak' in 1963 is considered the first independent modern Dari Persian poetry collection in Afghanistan and a turning point in contemporary Afghan literary history. Drawing upon Cyrus Shamisa's layered stylistics theory and employing a descriptive-analytical and statistical methodology, this study undertakes a comprehensive and in-depth examination of Bariq Shafiee's stylistic features across five layers: phonological, lexical, syntactic, rhetorical, and ideological. The statistical population comprises 25 poems from the 'Stak' collection, selected through purposive sampling. Findings reveal that, at the phonological layer, 92% of poems are composed in classical prosodic metres, with the poet's innovation concentrated primarily in rhyme and refrain schemes (64%). At the lexical layer, 34% of vocabulary belongs to the semantic domain of 'fire and explosion,' 26% to 'revolution and struggle,' and 20% to 'binary oppositions.' At the syntactic layer, repetition stands out as the most prominent stylistic marker, appearing 58 times across 25 poems (mean 2.32 per poem). At the rhetorical layer, metaphor accounts for the highest frequency at 27%. At the ideological layer, left-leaning anti-establishment ideology with emphasis on class justice forms the central core of the poet's worldview. This study demonstrates that all five layers in Bariq Shafiee's poetry exhibit organic and purposeful coherence, collectively serving to articulate a revolutionary ideology and create a fiery, dynamic poetic atmosphere
