Abstract

This study aims to describe the function of illocutionary acts conveyed by speakers to their interlocutors in communication, reviewed from a pragmatic perspective, particularly illocutionary acts. This study uses a qualitative approach because the research data consists of conversations between characters in the form of dialogues. The source of data in this study is the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck (The Sinking of the Van Der Wijck) directed by Sunil Soraya. The data collection technique uses the observation and note-taking methods. The data analysis technique uses the matching method. The findings on speech functions were analyzed using Leech's theory. According to Leech's theory, illocutionary speech acts are divided into four types, which were used as data, totaling 38 data points. These 38 data points were divided into 5 competitive data points, 13 convivial data points, 14 collaborative data points, and 6 conflictive data points. In addition, the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck teaches us that true love knows no boundaries of religion, race, and culture. However, in pursuing love, one must uphold good values in life and uphold the dignity of oneself and one's family.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and digital media, translating educational animation subtitles across cultures is crucial for effectively delivering messages to children in different languages. This study aims to examine the use of representative illocutionary acts and politeness strategies in the dialogue of the Arabic animated series Siraj and its Indonesian subtitle translation. The urgency of the research lies in the lack of pragmatic studies that combine Searle's speech theory and Leech's principle of Politeness in the context of translating children's animation, especially from Arabic to Indonesian. Using a descriptive qualitative method, Siraj's dialogue data were analyzed to identify the types of representative actions (e.g., statements, descriptions, reports) and the utilization of the six maxims of Politeness (wisdom, generosity, appreciation, humility, agreement, and sympathy). The results of the study show that all speech in Siraj's dialogue is representative of illocution, and the translation of the subtitles maintains the illocution's function without shifting its meaning. In addition, every principle of Politeness in the original dialogue—such as subtle instruction, agreeing with opinions, praise, being humble, and empathetic—is consistently reflected in the translation. These findings confirm the importance of pragmatic sensitivity in subtitle translation, ensuring that educational messages and moral values remain intact for cross-cultural audiences. Theoretically, this study enriches cross-linguistic pragmatic research in audiovisual translation, while, practically, it encourages translators to attend to aspects of speech and Politeness in subtitles to enhance translation quality.

Abstract

This study investigated blending as a word-formation process in Sundanese TikTok content to examine how morphological creativity reflects local identity, humor, and digital sociolinguistic practices. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, and data were collected from two Sundanese TikTok accounts and analyzed using Kemmer’s (2003) typology. 14 blended forms were identified, most of which were constructed through clipping and recombination of root words. The findings indicate that blending functions not only as a strategy for lexical economy but also as a medium for cultural expression, social commentary, and identity construction. In comparison with previous studies on English and Indonesian blending, the results demonstrate that Sundanese blends exhibit localized innovation within a global digital environment. It is concluded that blending represents a productive and expressive morphological strategy that contributes to the vitality of regional languages in online communication. Further research is recommended to examine blending practices across wider platforms and linguistic communities

Abstract

This study aims to examine the toponymy of street names in Sesela Village, Gunungsari District, West Lombok Regency, by analyzing their forms, meanings, and cultural values. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnolinguistic approach. Data were obtained through observation, interviews with community and traditional leaders, and historical document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using an ethnosemantic approach and cultural interpretation. The results of the study show that the toponymy of street names in Sesela Village consists of only two categories, namely naming based on social figures and historical events. The novelty of this study lies in the finding that street naming is completely dominated by social and historical memory, without involving geographical or natural aspects, thus confirming the function of toponymy as a medium for preserving collective memory and strengthening the cultural identity of the local community.

Abstract

In the digital era, smartphone advertising extends beyond the promotion of technical features and increasingly functions as a medium for constructing cultural meanings, myths, and ideologies. This study examines YouTube advertisements for the Samsung Galaxy A34 using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which includes the levels of denotation, connotation, myth, and ideology. Through qualitative analysis, the research identifies how visual narratives and technological representations in the commercials generate symbolic associations with empowerment, mobility, multicultural harmony, and futurism. These connotative meanings evolve into broader cultural myths that portray technology as a liberating force, a unifying agent, and a marker of social progress. At the ideological level, the advertisements naturalize values of modernity, consumerism, technological determinism, and hyper-individualism. Additionally, the study highlights YouTube’s algorithmic and multimodal features, which amplify the reach and ideological influence of such advertisements by enabling targeted dissemination and interactive user engagement. The findings demonstrate that YouTube smartphone commercials function not only as marketing tools but also as cultural texts that shape societal perceptions of technology, identity, and modern life.

Abstract

Cepuk cloth has been produced since the 1920s in Tanglad Village, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung Regency, Bali and it has a distinctive motif, different from other clothes produced in the other regencies in Bali. This study tries to identify the lexicons related to cepuk cloth found in the previous research since there have been several research reports on cepuk cloth from 1925. Besides, it also aims to describe the relation between the lexicon and its culture. The data were taken from the previous research concerning cepuk cloth, and they were collected through the observation and documentation methods. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and the analysis is presented using both formal and informal methods. The results show that there are 66 lexicons related to cepuk cloth categorized into eight, namely characteristic, use, type, motif/pattern, ideology, natural coloring resource, concept of color, and traditional weaving machine. Most of the lexicons are related to flora. There are five categories i.e. cepuk characteristics, uses, motif/pattern, ideology, and color concept that are closely related to Balinese Hindu culture. The lexicons related to culture show the symbolic ecology that investigates the coexistence of languages as symbol systems in Nusa Penida, and the sociocultural ecology that sees language as its part where it then shapes societies and cultures.

Abstract

This article examines the connection between Dérsanä Rufaýel and the healing methods evident in EOTC tradition and liturgy. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate Dérsanä Rufaýel's impact on the healing of illnesses and other related issues. The author's content analysis from the majority of his doctoral dissertation serves as the study's primary source. In addition to Dérsanä Rufaýel, intertextual analysis has also received attention, encompassing other important texts such as the Book of Enoch and the Déggwa of Saint Yared. In certain regions of Ethiopia, the study also involves the indirect monitoring of healing services conducted in certain St. Raphael's churches. According to the research, one of the easily accessible liturgical books on the theme of healing in the EOTC is Raphael's Homily. It is also mentioned in Mäséhäfä Sénksar throughout the yearly and monthly festivities. Therefore, healing is primarily associated with devotion to the magnificent archangel Rufaýel. The EOTC's devout pilgrims commemorate the days of the archangel and use the holy water to cure themselves of illnesses and other issues. Insofar as it opens up new avenues for study across the humanities, the relationship between ancient literature and modern considerations is fascinating.

Abstract

Language acquisition is a process of absorption and mastery of language that occurs naturally in children. During the developmental period of language acquisition, children require beneficial stimulation to optimally develop their language skills. Typically, this stimulation comes from parents, who are their closest caregivers. This research focuses on language acquisition in a 3-year-old child cared for by working mothers. It aims to identify and describe the types of sentence structures acquired and mastered by the child, as well as the factors influencing the child's first language acquisition, particularly in relation to parenting styles from a working mother’s perspective. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive method. The subject of the study is a female child aged 3 years and 6 months. The data required includes primary data obtained from observations and secondary data collected from interviews with individuals living in the child’s family environment and among neighbors. The results show that the research subject, Claudia (a pseudonym), who is 3 years and 6 months old, has mastered four types of sentence structures: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. Although the structures of these sentence modes are not perfect, Claudia's performance in producing them at her age is quite commendable. The observations and interviews reveal three main factors contributing to her speaking skills: social and family environmental factors, cognitive intelligence, and motivational factors.
