Abstract This empirical study was carried out to answer feasibility questions for junior secondary education (JSE) development project in term of community acceptance, support and participation. There was belief, held widely, that the willingness and the ability of the community to assume their part, generate and mobilize their resources would guarantee good result. Accordingly, the dynamic interactions between supply and demand within the education sector should be clarified prior to the beginning of the project. Improving JSE access means bringing JSE closer to the legitimate users by taking into account the best matching dynamic, interactive supply-demand within the socio-economic and cultural context. The assessment questions should deal with both the micro (school) level and the macro (community) one. The methodology (procedure and rules) relied upon rapid assessment through intensive educational and social discourses with a wide range of educational stakeholders in the bureaucratic offices and the community members in the field. An inventory and the interview guide were developed supported by secondary data and school observation. The general conclusions (related to policies not strictly to research) included: (1) the general public and school community constituencies tended to assume that the key to improve the JSE access was the supply of schooling facilities, especially school building.

AbstractThe objective of mathematics education covers the development of the students’ ability to use logical reasoning. At the Department of mathematics Education of IKIP Yogyakarta the sstudents study logic and set theory in the “Introduction to Foundations of Mathematics” (IFM) course. Categorical syllogism, shortened as syllogism, is an argument that is often used, but the subject matter of the IFM does not cover categorical syllogism. The problem is whether the course has developed the students’ ability in syllogistic reasoning. The study investigated the level of students’ ability in syllogistic reasoning and the correlation between the students’ grades in the IFM and the students’ ability in the syllogistic reasoning. The sample is 57 students who have taken the IFM at the Department of Mathematics Education. The ability in the syllogistic reasoning was measured by the a test on syllogism, where the students had to determine the validity of the 256 categorical syllogism in the standard form. Theresult indicates that the students’ ability in syllogistic reasoning is of low level and that there is no correlation between the students’ ability in syllogistic reasoning and the students’ learning achievement in the IFM (at the significance level of 0.05). therefore, it is recommended that the topic on categorical syllogism be included in the IFM course. Keywords: mathematics education, argument, categorical statement, syllogism, and syllogism reasoning.

Abstract This study was the broadening of a previous action research. The purpose of this study was to increase the interest of the students to read literature. This study was also aimed to explore the appropriateness of the literature for the students, the type of the assignment given by the lecturer, and the quality of circulation of the literature. This action research was done in nineteen undergraduate and one graduate courses from different study programs. The respondents of the study were the students and the lecturers of the courses. The data were collected using questionnaire and observation. The questionnaire was used to collect data from lecturers and from the students of the courses, while the observation was used to collect data about the activity of the students and the librarians. The data collected were analyzed quantatively, to describe of the percentage the respondents responding every question. The result of this study indicated that the majority of the students read the literature 1.5 hours per day outside the examination period and 3.5 hours during the examination period. The special service provided by IKIP Yogyakarta library combined with a systematic assignment from the lecturer made it possible for the students to be interested in reading the literature. This can be seen from the responses of the students, who generally viewed that most of the literatures were interesting, relevant, and very useful for the students to deepen their knowledge and skills. However, there were many of the students who found difficulties in understanding literature in English. The types of assignment given to the students were writing a book or report of reading, doing a discussion related to the literature, or writing a research proposal. The way the librarian handles the literature circulation was good. The condition of the reading room needed to be improved in order to be more comfortable. However that condition was better than the condition in the previous study. Keywords: reading interest, library service, and reserve literature.
