Abstract

Objective: This article examines the application of the Irfānī method in Hadith authentication as a strategy for epistemic decolonization, aiming to develop a more inclusive, spiritually grounded, and socially responsive approach to understanding Islamic teachings while demonstrating its contribution to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: The study is grounded in the theory of epistemic decolonization, drawing on Muhammad Rofiq Muzakkir’s perspective to critique the dominance of Western epistemological paradigms in Islamic scholarship and to emphasize the legitimacy of indigenous Islamic epistemologies, particularly the Irfānī tradition, which integrates spiritual intuition with ethical reasoning. Literature review: Previous studies on Hadith authentication predominantly emphasize textual criticism (naqli) and rational analysis ('aqli), whereas limited attention has been given to the spiritual and metaphysical dimensions of Hadith interpretation. Existing scholarship therefore reveals a significant gap concerning the integration of experiential spirituality into contemporary Hadith studies. Method: This research employs a qualitative library research approach by examining classical and contemporary literature on Hadith studies, Islamic epistemology, Irfānī thought, and decolonial theory through descriptive and interpretive analysis. Results: The findings demonstrate that the Irfānī method complements conventional Hadith authentication by incorporating spiritual experience, moral intuition, and ethical reflection without undermining established scholarly standards. This integrative approach strengthens interpretations promoting justice, compassion, social equality, environmental responsibility, and peaceful coexistence, thereby supporting several SDGs. Implications: The study provides an alternative epistemological framework for Islamic scholarship, encouraging educational institutions and researchers to embrace epistemic plurality while producing religious knowledge that is contextually relevant and socially transformative. Novelty: The principal contribution of this research is the integration of Irfānī spirituality into Hadith authentication within an epistemic decolonization framework, offering a holistic model that connects authentic Islamic knowledge production with contemporary global sustainability agendas and ethical development.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to identify the contribution of waqf empowerment to improve social welfare, which is then analyzed from the  perspective of maqashid sharia. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research uses the framework of maqashid sharia as a normative basis to assess the role of waqf as an Islamic socio-economic instrument that is oriented towards benefits. Literatur review: Previous studies have generally discussed waqf as an instrument of Islamic philanthropy, but systematic analysis of the contribution of waqf empowerment to social welfare based on maqashid sharia is  still limited. Methods: The method used is a systematic literature review (SLR) with a study period year (2016-2025), which resulted in 22 relevant articles. Result: The results of this study show that waqf empowerment contributes to improving social welfare, including First, the economy (poverty alleviation, funding economic activities including agriculture, MSMEs, and entrepreneurship training). Second, education (expanding students' access to learning, creating equal distribution of education, funding scientific research, and tahfidz to strengthen Qur'anic literacy). Third, health (logistical assistance for medical personnel, funding medical research and the development of modern health infrastructure). Fourth, the environment (protecting forest areas, maintaining the ecological function of the land, clean water management, and the development of alternative energy based on solar and biomass). Then in the five Islamic principles of maqashid sharia, including hifz al-mal and hifz al-nafs in the economic category, hifz al-'aql and hifz al-nasl in the category of education, hifz al-nafs in the health sector, hifz al-mal and hifz al-nasl in the environmental category. Implications: These findings provide a conceptual basis for the development of productive waqf policies oriented towards social welfare based on maqasid sharia. Novelty: This study offers a systematic mapping of the contribution of waqf empowerment based on maqasid sharia which enriches Islamic economic and philanthropic literature.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the Sedekah Rame tradition as social capital rooted in Islamic values in strengthening food security among agrarian communities in Lahat Regency, as well as its contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical Framework: The study employs social capital theory (Putnam and Bourdieu), cultural da’wah, solidarity-based Islamic economics, and the lived Islam perspective to understand the socio-religious functions of Sedekah Rame in community life. Literature Review: Previous studies highlight the importance of local Islamic traditions in maintaining social harmony; however, research linking local religious practices to food security and the SDGs remains limited. Methods: This study employs a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods through participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, religious figures, farmers, and village officials, as well as documentation analyzed interactively. Results: Findings indicate that Sedekah Rame functions as social capital that strengthens trust, solidarity, mutual aid, and mechanisms for redistributing harvests. This practice supports household and community food security through the strengthening of social networks, food access, and community participation. Implications: These findings suggest that local Islamic traditions can serve as community-based development strategies that support sustainable food security and social resilience. Novelty: This study offers a new perspective by positioning Sedekah Rame as Islamic social capital that functions in food redistribution and the strengthening of community food security, as well as contributing to the achievement of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine how the Sadd al-Dzari’ah principle of Islamic legal theory can be reconstructed into a preventive, SDGs-based governance model for urban waste management in Bandar Lampung City. Theoretical framework: The study draws on Sadd al-Dzari’ah and maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah as normative Islamic legal foundations, combined with New Institutionalism theory to explain the facilitative, catalytic, and regulatory roles of local government in environmental governance. Literature review: Existing studies on Islamic values and waste management have largely examined individual and community behavioral change, with limited attention given to how such values can be systematically institutionalized within local government policy or connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. Methods: This qualitative field research employs a descriptive-exploratory case study approach in Bandar Lampung City, using observation, documentation, and interviews with stakeholders of the City Environmental Agency, analyzed through content analysis and social theory analysis. Results: The findings show that the current waste management policy in Bandar Lampung City remains reactive and downstream-oriented; applying Sadd al-Dzari’ah principles allows its reconstruction into an upstream-based preventive model encompassing source segregation, strengthened preventive regulation, community participation, and industrial waste control. Implications: The study implies that Islamic normative principles can be operationalized as a systemic model of public environmental governance, helping local governments align waste management policy with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Novelty: Its novelty lies in integrating Sadd al-Dzari’ah with New Institutionalism theory to explain how Islamic ethical-legal values can be embedded in the facilitative, catalytic, and regulatory functions of local government, moving the discourse beyond prior studies that treat religious environmental ethics solely as a matter of individual moral education.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the influence of Spiritual Quotient (SQ) on the formation of Rahmatan lil-‘Alamin character among Islamic high school students in Boyolali Regency and to examine its relevance to SDGs-oriented Islamic education. Theoretical framework: The study is grounded in the concept of spiritual intelligence, which emphasizes spiritual awareness, the search for meaning, self-reflection, and the internalization of religious values, combined with the Rahmatan lil-‘Alamin framework, which emphasizes compassion, tolerance, moderation, justice, and social responsibility. Literature review: Previous studies have generally examined spiritual intelligence as a factor associated with students’ morality, emotional maturity, and prosocial behavior, while Rahmatan lil ‘alamin has frequently been discussed from normative and conceptual perspectives. However, limited empirical research has examined the relationship between spiritual quotient and Rahmatan lil-‘Alamin character as measurable constructs within Islamic secondary education. Method: This research employed a quantitative explanatory approach with a non-experimental design. Data were collected from 85 students selected through purposive sampling from two Islamic high schools in Boyolali Regency using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS. Results: The results demonstrate that Spiritual Quotient has a positive and significant influence on Rahmatan lil-‘Alamin character, with a path coefficient of 0.546. Students with stronger spiritual awareness, meaningful life orientation, and internalized religious values tend to exhibit greater compassion, tolerance, moderation, and social responsibility. Implications: The findings suggest that strengthening spiritual intelligence can support character education and contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by promoting inclusive, ethical, peaceful, and socially responsible educational environments. Novelty: This study provides empirical evidence positioning Rahmatan lil-‘Alamin character as a measurable educational construct influenced by spiritual quotient, thereby extending previous normative discussions and strengthening the empirical foundation of SDGs-oriented Islamic education.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to reconstruct the Qur’anic ethics of consumption in QS. Al-Isra’ (17): 26-27 and examine its relevance to contemporary consumerism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: The research is grounded in the theoretical framework of Islamic moral economy and ethical sustainability, using the hermeneutical approach of Ma’na cum Maghza to connect the textual meaning of the Qur’an with its contemporary social significance. Literature review: Previous studies have examined the concept of tabdhir (wastefulness) in Qur’anic interpretation and Islamic economic ethics; however, most remain normative and rarely integrate Qur’anic ethical principles with modern consumer culture or the global sustainability discourse. Methods: This study employs qualitative library research with textual and contextual analysis of QS. Al-Isra’ (17): 26-27 based on classical and contemporary Qur’anic exegesis and interdisciplinary literature. The analysis follows three stages: historical meaning, universal significance, and contextual reinterpretation. Results: The findings reveal that Qur’anic consumption ethics are built upon three core principles: wealth as a social trust, moderation in consumption, and the prohibition of wastefulness (tabdhir). These principles function as a moral framework that critiques modern consumerism while simultaneously supporting responsible consumption and equitable resource distribution. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that these ethical principles align with several SDGs, particularly SDG 12, SDG 1, SDG 10, and SDG 16, by promoting sustainable consumption, social justice, and economic balance. Implications: This study contributes theoretically by integrating contextual Qur’anic interpretation with sustainability discourse, offering a value-based framework for sustainable development grounded in Islamic ethical principles. Novelty: This study integrates the Ma'na cum Maghza approach with sustainability discourse by reconstructing Qur'an 17:26–27, offering a Qur'anic ethical framework for critiquing modern consumerism and promoting responsible consumption aligned with the SDGs.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the strategic role of zakat in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), identify the factors influencing its effectiveness, and develop an optimization model for zakat as an Islamic social finance instrument that promotes sustainable development and social welfare. Theoretical framework: The study is grounded in the principles of Islamic economics, Maqasid al-Shariah, and sustainable development theory. These perspectives explain how zakat functions as a mechanism for wealth redistribution, poverty alleviation, and equitable socio-economic development while advancing the objectives of human well-being and justice. Literature review: Previous studies have demonstrated that zakat contributes to poverty reduction, income redistribution, and social inclusion. However, existing research has largely examined these dimensions separately, with limited attention to integrating zakat, Maqasid al-Shariah, and the SDGs into a comprehensive conceptual framework for sustainable development. Methods: This research employed a qualitative approach using literature review and document analysis. Secondary data were collected from scholarly publications, reports of zakat institutions, government policy documents, and international reports related to Islamic social finance and sustainable development. The data were analyzed using thematic and interpretive techniques to identify patterns, relationships, and strategic implications. Results: The findings reveal that zakat significantly contributes to achieving SDGs by alleviating poverty, reducing socio-economic inequality, improving social welfare, supporting productive economic activities, enhancing food security, and expanding access to essential public services, including education, healthcare, and clean water. The effectiveness of zakat management is determined by institutional capacity, public literacy, governance quality, technological innovation, transparency, accountability, and collaboration among zakat institutions, governments, and other stakeholders. Implications: The study highlights the importance of strengthening zakat governance, digital innovation, and cross-sector collaboration to maximize the contribution of Islamic social finance toward inclusive and sustainable development aligned with the SDGs. Novelty: This study proposes an integrated conceptual model linking zakat, Maqasid al-Shariah, and the SDGs, providing a holistic framework for optimizing zakat as a sustainable Islamic social finance instrument that advances equitable socio-economic development.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyse how Islamic ecotheology is operationalised as an interdisciplinary framework to respond to environmental crises while supporting the achievement of SDGs at the madrasah level. Theoretical framework: A theoretical framework based on Islamic ecotheology with the concepts of caliph, amanah, mizan, and prohibition of facades, which is integrated with the perspective of education and sustainable development to shape ecological ethics and practices. Literature review: Literature review shows that Islamic ecotheology has a strong and effective ethical foundation when integrated into school culture, curriculum, and institutional practices. However, empirical studies in the context of madrassas are still limited. Method: The research used a mixed-method pilot design with a case study at MA Ma'arif Ambulu, Jember. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analysed descriptively and qualitatively. Results: Results show very high levels of theological understanding, environmental awareness, and support for ecological action, but implementation is still moderate. Ecological value already exists, but it has not been fully institutionalised. Key findings include the concept of trust, strong moral support, practices that are still partial, and the need for collaboration. Implications: Islamic ecotheology has the potential to support the SDGs, but it requires strengthening curricula, policies, habituation, and cross-stakeholder collaboration to make its implementation more effective. Novelty: This research offers an early empirical contribution with an interdisciplinary approach that connects Islamic ecotheology and the SDGs in the context of madrasas, as well as highlighting the gap between normative values and real practice.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to reconstruct Islamic character education from a global sustainability perspective by developing the ICES Framework as an integrative model. Theoretical Framework: This study is grounded in Islamic educational philosophy, character education theory, and the principles of education for sustainable development, which emphasize the integration of spiritual, ethical, social, and ecological dimensions in fostering responsible global citizens. Literature Review: Existing studies indicate character education in theoretical perspective, islamic character education from the perspective of islamic thought and education for sustainable development in theoretical perspective. Methods: This study employs a qualitative research approach based on library research. Data were collected from various scholarly sources, including journal articles, books, research reports, and relevant policy documents related to Islamic education, character education, and sustainability studies. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis and interpretative content analysis to identify, classify, and synthesize key concepts concerning Islamic values and global sustainability principles. Results: The findings reveal a strong epistemological convergence between Islamic values such as khalifah fil ardh, ‘adl, maslahah, amanah, and mizan and the core principles of global sustainability. Based on this convergence, the ICES Framework was developed, consisting of four interconnected dimensions: Islamic Values, Character Formation, Ethical Engagement, and Sustainability Orientation. The framework provides a comprehensive approach that integrates moral integrity, spiritual awareness, social responsibility, and ecological consciousness. Implications: The study underscores the importance of reorienting Islamic character education from a predominantly normative approach toward a reflective, contextual, and sustainability-oriented pedagogy. Such a transformation can contribute to the development of individuals who possess both strong moral character and a commitment to sustainable development. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the development of the ICES Framework, which systematically integrates Islamic character education with global sustainability principles, offering a conceptual model that bridges local religious values and contemporary global sustainability agendas, particularly in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the influence of cultural tourism on tourism progress and Regional Original Income (PAD) in the tourism sector and examine the mediating role of tourism progress from the perspective of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Alor Regency. Theoretical Framework: This study is based on the theory of cultural tourism, sustainable tourism development, and regional economic development that places culture as a strategic asset in increasing destination competitiveness and regional fiscal capacity. Literature Review: Although various studies have discussed the economic benefits of cultural tourism, regional tourism development, and PAD in the tourism sector in island regions are still limited. Method: The study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional explanatory design. Data were obtained from 60 tourism stakeholders through purposive sampling and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). Results: Cultural tourism has a positive and significant effect on tourism progress (β=0.507; p<0.001) and PAD in the tourism sector (β=0.597; p<0.001). Tourism progress also has a positive effect on the tourism sector's PAD (β=0.252; p=0.004) and partially mediates the relationship between cultural tourism and PAD (β=0.128; p=0.033). The effect size value (f²=0.620) indicates that cultural tourism is the main determinant of increasing the tourism sector's PAD. Implications: These findings provide an empirical basis for formulating cultural tourism development policies that support the achievement of SDGs 8, SDG 11, and SDG 17. Novelty: This study offers an empirical model that integrates cultural tourism, tourism progress, and tourism sector PAD in a single SDGs-based analytical framework in the context of an archipelagic region, which is still relatively rarely studied in Indonesian tourism literature.
