Abstract

Oil price volatility and economic growth relation have been well established in the extant literature without reference to divergent across the countries and sectors. The underlying problem of how the effects of volatility in oil prices vary across economic sectors and how they may have evolved is of particular importance. This paper therefore discusses, using the autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), the effects of volatility in oil prices on the growth of the real sector in Nigeria. The results show that oil price volatility has a positive effect on the selected three real economic sectors (agriculture, manufacturing, and transport) in both the short and long term. Results demonstrate that changes in the real sector are subject to changes in oil prices and that shifts in crude oil prices have a positive and insignificant impact on the drive of each sector. Besides, the supply of money has an adverse and significant impact on the agriculture and transport sectors. Accordingly, the paper offers that the Nigerian government should employ the monetary and fiscal policies policy framework aiming at providing foreign investors with special offers to invest in agriculture; and need to offer interest-free loans and subsidies to the manufacturers, transporters, and farmers.

Abstract

Sustainable development is a complex problem that demands a partnership to create synergy from government and the industrial sector. This partnership is created through corporate social responsibility (CSR) program with the sustainable development principle. East Java, one of the provinces in Indonesia, has developed CSR forums in the regencies/cities to synergize the company’s CSR programs with the regional development programs. This study aims to minutely examine how the industrial world optimally performs its role in regional development with its social responsibility. This research used the content analysis method, while the respondents were 18 CSR Forums out of regencies/cities in East Java, and companies incorporated in those forums. The results showed that most of the companies had carried out their social responsibilities with variations in their numbers and activities. A report said that three trillion rupiah were granted for the CSR fund. It was a significant amount compared to the 30 trillion development budgets of East Java in 2018. The implementation of CSR tends to be charity, instead of be directed and arranged into continuous and sustainable programs. The CSR Forums are to perform a proactive synergy between companies and the government. However, due to various limitations and constraints of each region, this has not reached its optimal level. Ongoing efforts are needed to establish government and industry harmonization with the intention that the existing CSR funds unquestionably become one of the regional development reinforcements. Keywords:   Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), CSR Forum, Regional Development

Abstract

The world economy is increasingly more globalized and Global Value Chains (GVCs) played a greater role in international trade and production which provides opportunities for economic growth and development. This paper examines the linkages between economic freedom and Global Value Chains. The developing nations in Asia need to have the ability to integrate themselves in GVCs in order to gain access to higher-value activities in GVCs. The objective of this study is to see the impact of the Economic Freedom Index, Female Labor Force Participation Rate and the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) in Asian countries considered as developing economies by the IMF on the countries’ position in GVCs measured using value-added indicators. The presence of the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) variable can indicate the role of government, consistency of policies, infrastructure and institutional formation, which is correlated in the level of Economic Freedom of developing nations.  This paper uses the Data Panel regression model consisting of multiple indicators of all the variables used from 25 developing countries in Asia from 2009 to 2017. Analysis indicates that the variables have an overall positive relationship with the level of integration of the countries into GVCs.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to (1) measure the level of the relative efficiency of educational spending in achieving the years of schooling at local governments in North Sumatra Province, (2) Compare the relative efficiency level of per capita educational spending between the parent local government and the local governments resulting from the split. The analytical method used is Data Envelopment Analysis with an output-oriented model. The approach used is a variable return to scale. In measuring efficiency, the input used is educational spending per capita, while the output used is the years of schooling. The results showed that the average level of the relative efficiency of 33 local governments in North Sumatra decreased from 2015 to 2018. In 2015, there were three relatively efficient local governments: Medan, Pematang Siantar, and Labuhan Batu. However, in 2018, only Medan is relatively efficient. The efficiency level of Labuhan Batu declined in 2018. In fact, all parent local governments and local governments resulting from split experienced a decrease inefficiency. Thus, a regional split has not succeeded in increasing the relative efficiency of local governments in North Sumatra Province.

Abstract

Occupational Segregation by gender is an improved labor market based on gender equality. This study uses an index-D to measure segregation that occurred in four rural areas categorized urban districts and counties Banyuasin Ogan Ilir South Sumatra Province. It was found that in all four regions of the occupation by gender still be integrated because the value of the index-D approaches 1. Meanwhile, based on the Pearson correlation coefficient is known that occupational segregation by gender has a significant relationship, very strong and negative direction with the percentage of women in the workforce and age, while the direction of the opposite relationship with the difference in the percentage of men and women who have a high school education and above.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the roles of domestic demand and export in the economic growth of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Specifically, this study examined: (i) the effect of domestic demand and export on economic growth, (ii) the effect of domestic demand components (i.e., private consumption, government consumption, and investment) on economic growth, and (iii) causal relationships between domestic demand, export, and economic growth. Using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bound test for cointegration, the study revealed thatNorth Sumatra’s economic growth is not driven by export. Export and economic growth do not affect each other, whereas domestic demand and economic growth influence each other dynamically. In the short-run, private consumption and investment have positive and significant effects on economic growth. However, in the long-run, only private consumption has a significant effect. ARDL Granger causality analysis showed that in the short-run, only private consumption has a causal relationship with economic growth. The absence of the causal relationships between both investment and government expenditure and economic growth indicates that the export sector, which is growing rapidly in both monetary terms and its shares in the regional gross domestic products (GDP), is isolated from the regional economic activities.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the factors that influence the adoption of financial sector reforms in Cameroon. The Abiad et al. (2008) technique is used to construct a financial reform index for Cameroon and the ordered logit model employed to identify its drivers for the period 1973-2017. The results show that financial reforms in Cameroon follow a progressive and constant pace and stands at the level of 88% in relative terms in 2017. The process of financial reforms is driven by the level of financial development, institutional quality, trade openness and economic crisis.
