Abstract

This study investigates the types of sarcasm used in workplace communication in the American television series House M.D. Season 8 (2012). The study aims to identify and classify sarcastic utterances based on Camp's (2012) typology, which consists of propositional, illocutionary, attributive (lexical), and like-prefixed sarcasm. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed using dialogue transcripts from all 22 episodes of the final season as the primary data source. Data were collected through documentation, verified by comparing the transcripts with the original episodes, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles et al. (2014), including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis identified 215 sarcastic utterances representing all four sarcasm types. Propositional sarcasm was the most dominant type (98 occurrences; 45.6%), followed by illocutionary sarcasm (82; 38.1%), attributive sarcasm (30; 14.0%), and like-prefixed sarcasm (5; 2.3%). The findings indicate that workplace communication in House M.D. predominantly employs indirect and context-dependent sarcastic expressions, particularly propositional and illocutionary sarcasm. This study supports Camp's typology and contributes to pragmatic research by illustrating how different linguistic realizations of sarcasm operate within professional workplace discourse.

Abstract

Song lyrics have become an important medium for representing psychological experiences and emotional struggles. Previous psychoanalytic studies have mainly examined defense mechanisms, inner conflict, and psychological aspects in various songs, while the psychological conflict between Eros and Thanatos in Shewn's Sun/Shine remains unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the representation of Eros, Thanatos, and the psychological conflict between these opposing instincts in the song. This research employs a qualitative approach using Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The data consist of the lyrics of Sun/Shine, which were analyzed through qualitative textual analysis. The findings reveal that Thanatos is represented through drowning, darkness, emotional suffocation, and identity loss, whereas Eros is represented through hope, sunlight, empathy, prayer, and the desire for recovery. The lyrics also portray psychological conflict through four binary oppositions: survival versus withdrawal, hope versus despair, connection versus isolation, and recovery versus emotional collapse. This study contributes theoretically to psychoanalytic literary criticism by extending Freud's theory to contemporary Indonesian independent music and practically by providing insight into how song lyrics represent psychological struggles through symbolic language.

Abstract

The use of code-mixing is a normal practice in multilingual societies and is useful in asserting social and cultural identities. Whereas, previous research has mainly focused on the code-mixing in the field of education or public discourse, there is not much research on the code-mixing in family communication for building identity. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and functions of code-mixing in the family of Chinese-Indonesian family members and to analyze the coding phenomenon as an indicator of the family members' identities. The method used was qualitative ethnographic approach with one Chinese-Indonesian family located in Surabaya. The data were gathered by the use of participant observation, field notes, interviews, and analysis was conducted using Spradley's ethnographic approach. The results showed that the most frequent form of code-mixing was insertion, followed by alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The primary use of code-mixing was to convey emotions, to deepen family intimacy and solidarity, to maintain Chinese cultural heritage, to promote the educational communication, and to engage in daily communication. The findings revealed that the use of multilingual language was indicative of the family members' identities, with the integration of local, national and global language. In general, this study gives attention to the fact that code-mixing is not just a communicative activity, but also a process of building and sustaining a multilingual and multicultural identity in the Chinese-Indonesian family context.

Abstract

The representation of queer and disabled identities in contemporary media has increasingly attracted scholarly attention. However, limited studies have explored how these intersecting identities contribute to the process of self-acceptance. This article examines the self-acceptance journey of Day Danainut, the protagonist of the Thai television series Last Twilight (2023), through the perspective of Judith Butler's queer theory. Employing a qualitative textual analysis, the study investigates selected scenes, dialogues, and cinematic elements, including mise-en-scène, sound, and visual composition, to understand how Day negotiates his identity within ableist and heteronormative social structures. The analysis is organised around three interconnected concepts derived from Butler's work—recognition, performativity, and subversion—which are examined as mutually constitutive processes rather than sequential stages. The findings demonstrate that Day's self-acceptance develops through continuous negotiation between social expectations and personal agency. His identity is repeatedly shaped by experiences of recognition and misrecognition, performed through everyday interactions, and reconstructed through acts that challenge dominant norms surrounding disability and sexuality. Rather than portraying self-acceptance as an individual psychological achievement, Last Twilight presents it as a socially negotiated process emerging from the intersection of queer identity and disability. By integrating queer theory with disability studies and film analysis, this article contributes to expanding discussions of intersectional identity in contemporary media and offers an alternative perspective on how self-acceptance is represented through ongoing identity negotiation.
