Abstract

News coverage of an event in online media often presents different constructions of reality despite originating from the same factual occurrence. This phenomenon is evident in the reporting of the tragic death of Affan Kurniawan, who was fatally run over by a Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) tactical vehicle during protest security operations. This study aims to analyze and compare the framing constructed by Tempo.co, Kompas.com, and Antaranews.com in reporting the incident. The research adopted a descriptive qualitative approach using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which encompasses four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The research data consisted of 15 articles published by the online media outlets Tempo.co, Kompas.com, and Antaranews.com between August 28 and December 31, 2025. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling technique, while data collection was carried out through documentation. Subsequently, the data were analyzed comparatively referring to Entman's four framing elements. The findings of this study indicate that the three media outlets constructed different realities regarding the same event. Tempo.co framed the tragedy as a human rights violation and an issue of police accountability by highlighting civil society perspectives. Kompas.com emphasized the humanitarian dimension by portraying the victim as the family's primary breadwinner and stressing the importance of social recovery. Meanwhile, Antaranews.com framed the event as a legal-formal matter resolved through legal and institutional mechanisms, prioritizing official statements from law enforcement officers. These framing differences were reflected in the selection of facts, choice of diction, placement of news sources, moral evaluations, and treatment recommendations. This study concludes that news coverage in the media is a product of constructed reality shaped by each media outlet's institutional orientation and editorial policy; thus, the same event has the potential to be interpreted diversely within the digital public sphere.
