About the Journal GEN BIONIX: Jurnal Ilmiah Pendidikan Biologi is a peer-reviewed journal that accepts and publishes scholarly articles in the field of biology education, including the application of biological research findings in learning contexts. The journal aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by presenting empirical findings, conceptual ideas, and critical reviews related to the teaching and learning of biology. The scope of the journal includes: biology/science education at the secondary school and higher education levels; the development and utilization of biological research as learning resources or media; biology education curricula; classroom action research (CAR) and lesson study; qualitative research in biology education; learning and biology laboratory management; learning assessment; as well as issues and trends in biology teacher professionalism. The journal targets readers consisting of teachers, lecturers, researchers, students, and educational practitioners who have an interest in and contribute to the development of biology education. The types of articles accepted include empirical research articles (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods), classroom action research, literature reviews (both systematic and narrative reviews), and conceptual articles relevant to the field of biology education. Abstract

Student motivation in biology classes is often assumed to be consistently high, even though this ideal condition has not yet been fully achieved, particularly in schools in island regions with limited resources and support for independent study at home, as is the case at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa in North Nias Regency. This study aims to analyze the levels of learning motivation among 10th and 11th-grade students in Biology classes at that school, examined from the dimensions of internal and external motivation. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design involving 66 students selected through purposive sampling from a population of 586 students. Data were collected via a Guttman-scaled questionnaire containing 20 statements, distributed online through Google Forms. The data were analyzed descriptively by categorizing respondents’ total scores into five levels of motivation. The results indicate that students’ learning motivation generally falls into the high category, with very high scores in perseverance, discipline, and the desire to achieve, but still low scores in the habit of independent learning at home and the initiative to seek additional learning resources. These findings indicate that students’ motivation is supported more by school structure and supervision than by internalized independent learning; therefore, strengthening independent learning at home is a key priority for the development of future biology learning strategies.

Abstract

The low level of active student engagement in biology learning and suboptimal learning outcomes are issues that need to be examined empirically. This study aims to describe the level of learning motivation and perceptions of biology learning outcomes, as well as to identify indicators of weaknesses among 11th-grade students at Idanogawo State High School 1. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a 14-item Yes/No questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to 23 valid respondents in May 2026. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and the percentage of responses per item. The results showed that the average learning motivation score was 5.48 out of a maximum of 6 (91.3%), while the average learning achievement score was 6.78 out of a maximum of 8 (84.8%). A total of 52.2% of students fell into the moderate category and 21.7% into the high category. The strongest motivational factors were found in the awareness of the importance of biology and the earnestness in completing assignments (100%), while the greatest weaknesses were found in independent learning outside of class hours (69.6%) and the willingness to ask questions when unsure (43.5%). Descriptively, there was a consistent pattern between motivation scores and perceptions of learning outcomes, confirming that learning motivation is positively correlated with students’ biology learning outcomes.

Abstract

Misconceptions are understandings that do not align with scientific concepts and can hinder the learning process, particularly among prospective elementary school teachers who will be teaching science concepts to students. This study aims to identify and analyze misconceptions among PGSD students regarding the diversity of biomes and ecosystems. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method using a survey technique involving the distribution of a questionnaire assisted by the Certainty of Response Index (CRI) to 38 second-semester PGSD students at the University of Nias. Data were analyzed descriptively based on the percentage of student responses to each statement. The results indicate that significant misconceptions persist regarding several concepts, including the relationship between ecosystem diversity and genetic and species diversity (84.2%), the concept of biomes and their components (78.9%), the impact of deforestation on ecosystems (73.7%), the characteristics of the tundra biome (55.3%), and the effects of poaching and water pollution on ecosystem balance (52.6%). Further analysis indicates that the misconceptions identified can be categorized into substitution misconceptions, failure to transfer knowledge across concepts, and erroneous ecological beliefs based on everyday experience. These findings suggest that PGSD students still face difficulties in understanding and connecting ecological concepts.

Abstract

This study objectives to theoretically analyze the morpho-physiological responses of mustard greens (Brassica juncea L.) to micro-environmental engineering and to formulate an efficient agronomic strategy based on a compilation of prior research data. The method used was a literature review by synthesizing secondary data from various scientific journals related to edaphic porosity manipulation and organic Nitrogen nutrient optimization. The results of the review show that edaphic engineering using porous materials such as husk biochar is consistently proven to enhance oxygen circulation in the rhizosphere, which increases the efficiency of active transport nitrate ion absorption. Optimal Nitrogen accumulation accelerates cell division in leaf mesophyll and increases chlorophyll concentration, thereby boosting carbon assimilation rates during the rapid vegetative phase (30–40 days). The implication of this study is the availability of a sustainable conceptual model for leafy vegetable horticulture cultivation using local organic materials. Based on the literature synthesis, stable micro-environmental manipulation is proven crucial to maintaining high turgor in amfistomatic guard cells, producing wide, fresh, and crispy leaves.

Abstract

Teacher professionalism is one of the key factors determining the quality of education. This study aimed to explore teacher professionalism from the perspectives of the teaching profession and educational management at UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Idanoi. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with an exploratory research design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving the school principal and a science teacher as research informants. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that teacher professionalism at UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Idanoi is generally categorized as good, as indicated by the majority of teachers having completed the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) and obtained teaching certificates. Teachers actively participate in various professional development activities to enhance their competencies. From the educational management perspective, the school supports teacher professionalism through training programs, effective teacher management, and the provision of learning facilities. However, challenges remain, particularly related to limitations in educational facilities and infrastructure, including laboratory equipment, as well as diverse student characteristics. The school addresses these challenges through collaboration among teachers, counseling staff, and parents. Overall, teacher professionalism has shown positive development and continues to require support through sustainable competency improvement and educational facility enhancement.

Abstract

The development of science and technology in the food sector requires people to have the ability to understand scientific food processing processes and implement sustainable consumption patterns. Scientific literacy is one of the important competencies that needs to be developed to help individuals understand the relationship between science, technology, the environment, and everyday life. Food processing technology not only functions to improve the quality, safety, and shelf life of food products, but can also be used as a contextual learning medium in developing students' scientific literacy. Through food processing technology-based learning, students can understand scientific concepts such as physical and chemical changes in food ingredients, the influence of microorganisms, preservation principles, and food safety aspects. Apart from that, this learning is able to raise awareness about the importance of responsible, efficient, and environmentally friendly food consumption. This article aims to examine the role of food processing technology as a means of developing scientific literacy and forming awareness of sustainable food consumption. The study was carried out through analysis of various relevant literature sources regarding science education, food technology, and sustainable development. The results of the study show that the integration of food processing technology in learning is able to increase understanding of scientific concepts, critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and students' awareness of the importance of sustainable food systems in supporting food security and environmental preservation.

Abstract

Biology instruction not only emphasizes conceptual mastery but also requires attention to students’ psychological aspects to ensure an effective learning process. This study aims to describe the strategies teachers use in implementing biology instruction based on educational psychology at Permata Kasih Private High School. The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through interviews with biology teachers as the primary informants and were then analyzed descriptively to interpret the teaching strategies implemented. The results showed that teachers applied Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Cooperative Learning strategies to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, collaboration, and participation. Teachers also integrate psychological aspects by providing motivation, using individualized approaches, managing students’ emotions, creating a comfortable learning environment, utilizing learning media and technology, and conducting evaluations accompanied by constructive feedback. Although there are challenges such as low interest in learning, lack of concentration, and low self-confidence among some students, teachers strive to overcome these through guidance, effective communication, and varied learning strategies. It is concluded that the implementation of biology instruction grounded in educational psychology creates a positive learning environment, enhances student motivation and engagement, and supports the optimal achievement of learning objectives.

Abstract

Food preservation is an essential technology in the food industry aimed at maintaining product quality, ensuring food safety, and extending shelf life. Various preservation methods have been developed, ranging from conventional techniques such as refrigeration, freezing, drying, and fermentation to modern technologies including vacuum packaging, Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), edible coatings, and non-thermal processing. This article aims to review different food preservation methods and analyze their effects on food quality and shelf life based on published scientific studies. The research employed a literature review method by collecting and analyzing relevant national and international journal articles on food preservation technologies. The findings indicate that each preservation method operates through different mechanisms to inhibit microbial growth, enzymatic activity, and chemical reactions responsible for food deterioration. Refrigeration and freezing effectively slow biological spoilage, while drying reduces moisture content and limits microbial growth. Fermentation enhances product stability and may improve functional properties. Furthermore, modern preservation technologies, such as MAP, edible coatings, and non-thermal methods, have demonstrated greater effectiveness in maintaining nutritional value, color, texture, and sensory characteristics of food products. Combining multiple preservation techniques often provides superior results in extending shelf life without significantly compromising product quality. Therefore, selecting appropriate preservation methods is crucial for maintaining food quality, ensuring safety, and minimizing postharvest losses during storage and distribution.

Abstract

Food processing technology plays a crucial role in improving food quality, safety, and shelf life amid the growing demand for safe, nutritious, and sustainable food products. Various processing methods, ranging from conventional techniques to advanced technologies, have been developed to maintain product quality while minimizing spoilage and contamination risks. This article aims to examine the role of food processing technology in enhancing food quality, safety, and shelf life through a literature review approach. Data were collected from scientific journals, books, research reports, and other relevant academic sources related to food processing technology. The reviewed literature indicates that processing technologies such as heating, cooling, freezing, drying, fermentation, canning, and modern packaging effectively preserve the physical, chemical, sensory, and microbiological characteristics of food products. These technologies also contribute to controlling pathogenic microorganisms, reducing post-harvest losses, improving product stability, and extending storage periods. Furthermore, recent innovations, including modified atmosphere packaging and non-thermal processing technologies, provide additional opportunities to improve food quality while maintaining nutritional value. In conclusion, food processing technology is an essential component of modern food systems, supporting the production of safe, high-quality, and sustainable food products while contributing to food security and reduced food waste.

Abstract

Teacher professionalism and competence are crucial elements in ensuring the effectiveness of educational management and improving the quality of education. Teachers are expected to possess professional attitudes and competencies that support effective teaching and learning processes. This study aimed to analyze teacher professionalism and competence within the perspective of educational management at SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Utara. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon under investigation. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, with the school principal serving as the primary informant. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that teacher professionalism is reflected in responsibility, discipline, commitment to teaching duties, active participation in school programs, and efforts to improve instructional quality. Teachers generally demonstrate adequate pedagogical, professional, social, and personal competencies, although differences in competency levels among individuals remain evident. Educational management plays an important role in supporting teacher development through supervision, training programs, professional development activities, performance evaluation, and the provision of a conducive working environment. Furthermore, the principal contributes significantly to fostering teacher professionalism and competence through guidance, monitoring, and continuous support. The study concludes that effective educational management contributes substantially to strengthening teacher professionalism and competence, thereby enhancing the overall quality of education at SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Utara.
