Abstract

Gentamicin is an antibiotic widely used in medicine to treat serious bacterial infections, particularly urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin, and soft tissue infections. This drug belongs to the aminoglycoside class, which works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing bacterial survival. Despite its high efficacy, gentamicin has significant side effects, particularly on the kidneys. Long-term or high-dose use of gentamicin can cause nephrotoxicity, which is damage to kidney tissue characterized by decreased filtration function, impaired glomerular and tubular structure, and increased blood creatinine and urea levels. This occurs because gentamicin tends to accumulate in the proximal tubules of the kidneys, triggering oxidative stress and inflammation. To reduce the toxic effects of gentamicin on the kidneys, nephroprotective agents are needed. One potential natural ingredient is mangosteen rind extract (Garcinia mangostana). Mangosteen rind is known to contain active compounds such as xanthones, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. This compound is capable of neutralizing free radicals and suppressing the inflammatory response, which is one of the causes of kidney tissue damage. This study aimed to determine the effect of mangosteen peel extract on the histological appearance of the kidneys of rats treated with gentamicin. Histological analysis was performed to observe changes in kidney structure, such as tubular cell degeneration, necrosis, or inflammatory cell infiltration. It is estimated that administering mangosteen peel extract can minimize or prevent kidney tissue damage, making it an alternative complementary therapy to gentamicin. This research also marks the first step in the development of safe and effective herbal-based phytopharmaceuticals to support kidney health.

Abstract

Physical activity includes all body movements performed in working, playing, or traveling, while physical inactivity is characterized by minimal movement and low energy expenditure. Body Mass Index (BMI) and recovery heart rate are important indicators in assessing fitness status and health risks. This study aims to determine the difference in cardiovascular system recovery time after physical activity based on BMI category in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Gunadarma University. Students in this study are classified as late adolescents to early adults with typical lifestyles, such as lack of sleep, irregular eating patterns, academic stress, and low physical activity, which can impact the cardiovascular system. This study applied a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling technique among students who met the inclusion criteria. The research procedure was carried out in two stages, namely measuring blood pressure, pulse rate, O₂ saturation, and BMI before and after a six-minute walking test, then continued with measuring the pulse recovery time after a ±20-minute rest. Data were analyzed using paired T-test and One Way ANOVA according to data distribution. The majority of respondents were women (92.5%) from the class of 2019 (77.4%), with an average age of 20.79 years. The results showed a significant increase in systolic blood pressure and pulse rate after the physical test (p=0.001), while diastolic blood pressure showed no significant change (p=0.622). No significant difference was found in recovery time based on BMI categories (p=0.516). Therefore, it can be concluded that physical activity significantly influences several physiological parameters, particularly systolic blood pressure and pulse rate. However, BMI status was not shown to affect the speed of cardiovascular recovery after physical activity.

Abstract

Workplace accidents are a major issue in the industrial world, placing significant emphasis on worker safety and health. One preventive measure that has proven effective in reducing workplace accident rates is the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PPE in reducing the risk of workplace accidents in high-risk work environments. The methodology employed includes a literature review of previous studies and direct observations in the manufacturing and construction industries. The findings indicate that consistent and standardized use of PPE can reduce workplace accident rates by 60–80%, depending on the industry type and the level of employee compliance with established safety standards. In addition, the study highlights that the effectiveness of PPE is strongly influenced by factors such as worker awareness, company safety policies, training programs, and supervisory enforcement. Lack of compliance or improper use of PPE remains a challenge in many workplaces, often caused by discomfort, limited knowledge, or negligence. Therefore, the implementation of continuous safety training, monitoring systems, and strict enforcement of safety regulations is essential to ensure proper PPE usage. Overall, this study emphasizes that while PPE alone cannot eliminate workplace accidents, it plays a critical role as part of an integrated occupational safety strategy. The findings suggest that industries should prioritize investment in PPE quality, worker education, and safety culture development to create safer and healthier work environments.

Abstract

Burdock (Arctium lappa L.) is a medicinal plant that contains active compounds such as flavonoids, lignans, and phenolic acids, which act as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and hepatoprotective substances. This study aimed to evaluate the blood biochemical profile following the administration of burdock root extract in white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study was conducted experimentally using eight male and female rats, divided into four groups: a negative control group (aquadest) and three treatment groups receiving doses of 150, 300, and 450 mg/kgBB orally for 28 days. Blood biochemical parameters were examined on day 36, including albumin, total protein, globulin, glucose, urea, amylase, cholesterol, ALT, ALP, total bilirubin, creatinine, and creatine kinase. The results showed that most biochemical parameters remained within the normal range, although significant changes were observed in some groups. Urea, amylase, and total bilirubin levels remained stable, while total protein, globulin, and ALP levels tended to be higher in female rats. Elevated glucose, cholesterol, and ALT levels in most treatment groups indicated potential disturbances in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, while increased creatinine levels in some groups suggested possible nephrotoxic effects. Administration of burdock root extract influenced the biochemical blood profile, particularly related to glucose and lipid metabolism as well as liver function. Further studies are needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and evaluate the long-term safety of burdock root extract.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition when the hemoglobin (Hb) level in the blood is less than normal. The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency. Adolescent girls are at risk of anemia due to their rapid growth and lack of iron intake. Anemia in adolescent girls has various adverse effects both in the short and long term. The Indonesian government prevents anemia in adolescent girls with a program to provide blood supplement tablets to fulfill iron intake. This program is implemented through schools by providing free blood supplement tablets, one tablet per week. Of 80.9% of adolescent girls who received blood supplement tablets at school, only 1.4% consumed ≥ 52 tablets per year. One of the factors that influence adherence behavior is knowledge. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and compliance with the consumption of blood supplement tablets in adolescent girls at SMPN 6 Kupang. Method:  This research was an analytical observational research with a cross-sectional approach. This study was conducted on adolescent girls from SMPN 6 Kupang using a knowledge questionnaire and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) questionnaire. Abstract

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborns, with various factors influencing its occurrence, such as gestational age, type of delivery, maternal hemoglobin status, and maternal nutritional status. Based on preliminary observations at RS Hikmah Sejahtera Sukamaju, newborns exhibit variations in terms of gestational age, delivery type, and maternal health, which can affect the baby's health, especially in the occurrence of neonatal jaundice that may develop into physiological or pathological. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with the occurrence of neonatal jaundice in newborns at RS Hikmah Sejahtera Sukamaju. The research method employed is a quantitative study with an analytical observational design. The time approach used is cross-sectional, with the population consisting of all newborns born at RS Hikmah Sejahtera Sukamaju in 2025. Data collected includes variables of gestational age, delivery type, maternal hemoglobin status, and maternal nutritional status. The results of the study indicate that of the four variables studied, two factors significantly influenced the occurrence of neonatal jaundice: gestational age and maternal nutritional status. Meanwhile, the type of delivery and maternal hemoglobin status were found not to have a significant impact on the occurrence of neonatal jaundice in newborns at this hospital. These findings are important to enhance the understanding of factors influencing neonatal jaundice and serve as a basis for better prevention and management efforts in the hospital.

Abstract

Rabies is a deadly disease transmitted through animal bites, especially dogs, and remains a serious threat in Indonesia. As of April 2023, more than 31,000 bite cases have been recorded, with Southeast Sulawesi being the region with the highest number of cases. In Kendari City, data show that bite cases have fluctuated since 2018. Research Objective: To develop a prediction model for rabies prevention measures to support an early warning sistem (EWS) among high school students in Kendari City. Research Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study involving 350 students from three sub-districts (Baruga, Poasia, and Kadia). Independent variables included knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs, while the dependent variable was rabies prevention measures. Data were collected in February 2025 through a hybrid/online questionnaire. Research Results: Knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs have a significant effect on rabies prevention measures among high school students in Kendari City. Knowledge was the most dominant factor. Students with good knowledge were 8.7 times more likely to practice rabies prevention. If the three variables were at a low level, the probability of rabies prevention actions among students was 14.4%, but it increased significantly to 95.6% when all three variables were at a high level. Research Conclusion: There is a significant influence of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs on rabies prevention behavior to support the early warning sistem (EWS) among high school students in Kendari City in 2025. The probability of engaging in preventive behavior is 14.4% when all three variables are at a low level, but it increases significantly to 95.6% when all variables are at a high level. Knowledge contributes the most, while attitudes and beliefs synergistically strengthen the overall effect.

Abstract

Mathematics education is a cornerstone in developing students’ critical and analytical thinking skills. This study aimed to examine the effect of self-efficacy on academic anxiety among students of MTs Negeri 1 Pontianak. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 148 students selected via proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Mathematics (SEQ-M, 20 items) and an adapted 18-item State-Trait anxiety Inventory. Content validity was established by expert panels and reliability coefficients were α = 0.931 for self-efficacy and α = 0.965 for anxiety. Inferential analyses included Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality tests, scatterplot linearity assessments, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. Results indicated a significant negative correlation between self-efficacy and academic anxiety (r = –0.438; p < 0.001). The regression coefficient of –0.609 shows that each unit increase in self-efficacy reduces academic anxiety by 0.609 points. Self-efficacy accounted for 19.2% of the variance in anxiety levels (R² = 0.192). Descriptive findings revealed most students scored at moderate levels of self-efficacy (69.1%) and anxiety (86.4%). These outcomes support Bandura’s social cognitive theory, emphasizing belief in one’s capabilities as a buffer against negative emotional responses in mathematics. Practical implications include designing mastery-oriented learning activities, providing targeted positive feedback, and implementing coping strategies and emotion-regulation training. Future research should investigate moderating factors such as social support and self-regulated learning, and adopt qualitative approaches to capture students’ subjective experiences.
