Abstract

Adolescents are vulnerable to nutritional problems due to imbalanced energy intake and limited nutritional knowledge, which can affect their nutritional status. This descriptive quantitative study aimed to assess energy intake, nutrition knowledge, and nutritional status among adolescents at SMKN 1 Kademangan, Blitar Regency. A total of 71 students were selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires, two 24-hour dietary recalls, and anthropometric measurements. Energy intake was analyzed using NutriSurvey and NutriCal, and nutritional status was determined using BMI-for-age (BMI/A) based on WHO standards. The results showed that 91.5% of respondents had normal nutritional status, 7.0% were overweight, and 1.4% were obese. In terms of nutrition knowledge, 62% had good knowledge, 35.2% moderate, and 2.8% poor. Meanwhile, 85.8% of respondents experienced varying levels of energy intake deficits (40.8% severe, 22.5% moderate, 22.5% mild), and only 14.1% had normal energy intake. Despite the high prevalence of energy deficits, most respondents maintained a normal BMI-for-age. This suggests that other factors may influence nutritional outcomes. Strengthening nutrition education and promoting healthy eating behaviors are recommended to support adolescent health.

Abstract

Adolescents are prone to nutritional problems due to unhealthy eating habits, worsened by lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to describe the eating patterns and nutritional status of adolescents at SMAN 17 Surabaya. A descriptive quantitative design was used, involving 38 randomly selected Grade XI students from November 2021 to March 2022. Data were collected through anthropometric measurements and a validated Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), then analyzed descriptively. The majority of respondents were 17 years old (63.2%) and female (73.7%). While all respondents were categorized as having good food types based on diversity, most exhibited severe macronutrient deficits, most had severe deficits in energy (73.7%), protein (42.1%), fat (52.6%), and carbohydrates (84.2%). Consumption of vegetables, fruits, and protein sources was low. All respondents (100%) had poor dietary patterns. Nutritional status showed that 68.4% were normal, 13.2% underweight, 10.5% overweight, and 7.9% obese. Schools, parents, and health professionals are encouraged to improve adolescents' nutrition through education, monitoring, and promoting balanced diets with adequate intake of fruits, vegetables, and protein.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional issue that adversely affects children's growth and development, and remains a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, including in the Porong Health Center area, Sidoarjo. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two counseling methods—Emo Demo and lectures—on improving the attitudes of mothers with stunted children under five. A pre-experimental design with one-group pretest–posttest was used, involving 20 respondents who were divided evenly into two groups. Each group received nutrition counseling using either the Emo Demo or lecture method. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test and the Independent T-Test/Mann-Whitney to measure changes and compare attitudes before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in maternal attitudes within both groups: Emo Demo (p = 0.001) and lecture (p = 0.045). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods (p = 0.121). Despite this, the average increase in attitude scores was higher in the Emo Demo group (27%) compared to the lecture group (13%). These findings suggest that while both methods are effective in improving attitudes toward balanced nutrition, the Emo Demo method may offer greater practical impact in supporting behavior change among mothers.

Abstract

One of the factors that causes stunting is the mother's knowledge, so that the mother is approached using counseling. The aim of the study was to determine the difference in the effectiveness of using the emo demo method and the demonstration method on changing the knowledge of stunting mothers at the Porong Sidoarjo Health Center. This type of research is pre-experimental with the type of one group pretest-posttest. The emo demo and demonstration methods each have 10 samples. Data analysis will be carried out by the Dependent T-test. The use of the emodemo and demonstration methods is considered effective in changing the knowledge of stunting mothers with a significant difference in pretest-posttest scores indicating that the emodemo method has a p-value of 0.000 and demonstration has a p-value of 0.002. However, from the comparison of the two methods, it does not have a significant significance value, showing a p-value > 0.05. Emo demos and demonstrations are effective in changing mother's knowledge, but there is no significant difference in changing mother's knowledge.

Abstract

Background: Stunting in toddlers is primarily caused by inadequate macronutrient intake and repeated infections. This study aims to describe the intake of macronutrients and the history of infectious diseases among stunted toddlers in the working area of Kamal Health Center, Bangkalan Regency. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving 25 stunted toddlers. Stunting status was assessed using height-for-age z-scores. Data on macronutrient intake (energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates) and history of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and diarrhea were collected through structured interviews with caregivers. The data were analyzed using frequency and percentage distributions. Results: Most subjects were girls (52%) and aged 24–36 months (36%). Energy intake deficits were found in 72% of toddlers, protein in 84%, fat in 76%, and carbohydrates in 68%. All respondents had experienced at least one ARI episode, and 56% had a history of diarrhea. Many children with infections also had light to moderate macronutrient deficits. Conclusion: Chronic deficits in energy and protein, combined with frequent infections, exacerbate the risk of stunting. Integrated nutrition and infection control interventions—especially for children aged 24–36 months—are essential. Strong policy support and improved parental education are needed to implement effective stunting reduction programs at the community level.
