The genus Smilax has taxonomic complexity problems and spacious distribution. Taxonomic study to reveal the diversity of Smilax species had been done in some regions, such as America, China, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. However, there is lack of information of Smilax species diversity in Kalimantan especially in East Kalimantan which lies in Sundaland biogeographic. This study was carried out to explore and record the diversity of Smilax species including the ecological and environmental data in Besiq-Bermai and Bontang forests in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This research conducted on February and August in 2012 and July-August 2015 using exploration methods. Purposive random sampling was used to do the botanical sampling. The principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to determine the relationships between environmental components and Smilax species occurrences. There were five species of Smilax which were housed in those forests in East Kalimantan, namely, Smilax leucophylla Blume, Smilax gigantea Merr., Smilax odoratissima Blume, Smilax zeylanica L., and Smilax modesta A.DC. Smilax leucophylla and Smilax zeylanica are the most widely used by the local people for medicine. The taxonomic description, distribution, use, and vernacular name were given. The environmental factors that contribute significantly to Smilax's growing environment are temperature and light intensity.

Abstract. Setyayudi A, Krisnawati, Nandini R. 2019. Short Communication: Exploration of bidara laut (Strychnos lucida) parent trees in Gunung Tunak Ecotourism Park, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 374-378. Bidara laut (Strychnos lucida R. Brown) is one of the widely used medicinal plants. There is a bidara laut wood processing industry in West Nusa Tenggara that produces drinking cups called ‘health cups’ utilizing bidara laut. All raw materials used for the production of health cups are, however, obtained from bidara laut stands in forest areas, which may cause the extinction of this medicinal plant species if the highly intensive raw material harvesting in the forest is not supported with cultivation of this plant species. To preserve this plant species, the Institute for Research and Development of Non-Timber Forest Products Technology (NTFP-RDI) has carried out breeding activities by developing a collection garden of this species from the populations of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara (Lombok and Sumbawa Islands). The initial step carried out was the exploration of the parent trees followed by collection of generative materials (seeds) and nurseries. Exploration of bidara laut parent trees on Lombok Island was carried out in Gunung Tunak Ecotourism Park using a purposive sampling method, followed by collection of fruits to obtain seed propagating materials for establishment of seedling nurseries. Twenty-five parent trees were identified with average height of nine m, stem diameter of 24 cm and stem straightness scales of 1-3. The average seed produced was 413 seeds tree-1. Three parent trees were selected based on the highest seed germination rates, namely parent trees number 6, 14 and 20. This result provides useful information for the next bidara laut breeding activities.

Biodiversitas 20: 303-310. The study of biological and ecological characteristics is essential in conservation efforts of threatened and locally rare species. Obtaining the comparable data in different regions of a species range allows developing a conservation strategy. We aimed to study the distribution, acquired characteristics of the abundance and habitats of the biology of a rare species Parnopes grandior (Pallas, 1771) in the Republic of Mordovia (European Russia). As a result of our study, the biology of Parnopes grandior found in the Republic of Mordovia and in five adjacent regions (Volga River Basin, Russia) is described. In the Republic of Mordovia in 2008-2018, 18 habitats of this species were identified. In all cases, it was found next to the host wasp colonies of Bembix rostrata (Linnaeus, 1758). The species population was low (no more than five individuals per study site). In all the sites surveyed, it inhabited xerophytic plant communities on sandy disturbed substrate. In these habitats, the coverage of plants is low and does not exceed 20%. The list of plants visited by the adults of Parnopes grandior is given. In the adjacent regions, the species abundance is also not high, but the number of records and abundance increases significantly to the south of the Ulyanovsk region.

Abstract. Robiansyah I, Dodo, Hamidi A. 2019. Population status of endemic tree kokoleceran (Vatica bantamensis) in Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 296-302. Kokoleceran (Vatica bantamensis) is an endemic tree found only in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP), Banten, Indonesia, and is classified as Endangered by IUCN Red List. To develop effective conservation measures of threatened plants, current information on population status and distribution of the species is needed. Thus in the present study, a targeted survey of kokoleceran was conducted in UKNP aiming at mapping the distribution of the species, measuring current population size and structure, assessing the habitat preferences, and identifying threats to the species. Using a non-random adaptive cluster sampling, a total of 27 clusters harboring 280 individuals of kokoleceran was located, of which 20 % were in mature stage. All these individuals were only found in Mount Payung and its surrounding areas, and formed an inverse-J-shaped population structure pattern. The species was estimated to have an area of occupancy and extent of occurrence of 8 km2. The invasive langkap palm (Arenga obtusifolia, Arecaceae) was identified as the main threat for kokoleceran. Based on these results, kokoleceran appears to more than justify its conservation status of Critically Endangered B1ab(iii,v) +2ab(iii,v); C2a(ii).

Ruchin AB, Egorov LV, Semishin GB. 2019. Ladybird beetles fauna (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) of the Republic of Mordovia, Russia. Biodiversitas 20: 316-327. The paper presents the first overview of Coccinellidae fauna of the Republic of Mordovia, Russia. Nowadays 46 species are reliably known in Mordovia. Of these, three species have firstly been registered in the Republic of Mordovia in recent years, namely Nephus bipunctatus, Hyperaspis erythrocephala, and Oenopia conglobata. In addition, three species were recommended to be excluded from the list of regional fauna.

Biodiversitas 20: 311-315. Mangrove forest ecosystem has been known for its roles in buffering coastal abrasions and being a reservoir for seafood production. However, very little information is available on its role in sequestering carbon and how its annual growth ability can benefit climate change mitigation. This study aims to determine carbon storage and sequestration by one, three and five-year-old Rhizophora apiculata Blume planted in PT. Ovivipari Bina Semesta (PT. BIOS). This study was conducted for over five months during 2015-2016, in purposively selected mangrove rehabilitation area. It used both harvestings as well as non-harvesting methods for estimation of carbon stock and carbon sequestration. The results show that the mangrove species has a very high ability to sequester carbon per unit area. The amount of carbon stored in plants aged 1 year, 3 years and 5 years were 0.363 tonnes ha-1, 5,591 tonnes ha-1 and 7,240 tons ha-1, respectively. The study also indicated that the carbon stock values obtained by non-harvesting method using allometric equation were higher than the values obtained by harvesting method.

Salinity and subsequent freshwater influences on the growth, biomass, and polyisoprenoids distribution of Rhizophora apiculata seedlings. Biodiversitas 20: 388-395. This study described the growth, biomass, and polyisoprenoids (polyprenol and dolichol) distribution of Rhizophora apiculata seedlings under saline and subsequent fresh water treatment. Propagules of R. apiculata were collected from Pulau Sembilan, Langkat, North Sumatra and were grown in 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 3.0% salt concentrations for three months. After three months planted in a glass house, R. apiculata seedlings were divided into two groups and grown for another three months. The first group was continuously grown under the saline condition and the second was moved to fresh water to recover from the saline condition. The leaves, stems, and roots of R. apiculata seedlings were harvested after six months of cultivation. Polyisoprenoids alcohol was isolated from the leaves and roots of R. apiculata seedlings and analyzed using two-dimensional thin layer chromatography. Growth parameters measured were height and diameter of R. apiculata seedlings. The height of R. apiculata seedlings was significantly affected by salinity levels of 2.0%, 3.0% and 3.0% ? 0.0%. The arrow (?) denoted fresh water recovery treatment. The best height and diameter of R. apiculata seedlings were observed in 0.5% salt concentration. Salinity treatment and re-adaptation into freshwater significantly influenced the leaves area (2.0%, 3.0% and 3.0% ? 0.0%), fresh weight of stem (3.0% and 3% ? 0.0%) and stem dry weight (3% ? 0.0%). Distribution of polyprenols and dolichols in the leaves and roots of R. apiculata seedlings were categorized as type I, where dolichol was dominant over polyprenol. Under salinity and subsequent fresh water recovery treatments (0.0%, 1.5%, 1.5% ? 0.0%, 3.0%, and 3.0% ? 0.0%), the carbon chain length of dolichol in the leaves and in the roots was, respectively, C85-C100, C85-C100, C85-C105, C85-C100, C85-C95 and C85-C105, C85-C105, C85-C105, C85-C110, C85-C100. These data suggested the significant role of polyisoprenoids in mangrove plants to withstand salt stress and or water stress.

Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq is a popular medicinal plant in Southeast Asia. The morphological variation of O. aristatus is narrow and information on flowering and seed germination is limited. This study aimed to determine the morphological characters, flowering and seed germination of O. aristatus. The study was conducted on 19 accessions (ex situ collections) of O. aristatus from West, Central and East Java. It was found that the differences in morphological and flowering characters were mainly based on shape and color. The dominant stem color is strong yellowish green mixed with deep purplish pink in different proportions. The dominant leaf shape was medium elliptic. O. aristatus flower has three kinds of colors: purple, intermediate and white (the most common color). O. aristatus has heterostyled flower with a long-styled morph. The stigma has two shapes: open and close (the dominant shape). The open and close stigma was found in Tuban accession, the open stigma was found in Pamekasan accession. O. aristatus accessions have a narrow diversity of 84% similarity rate. O. aristatus started flowering at 4-5 weeks after planting and blooming 2-3 weeks later. O. aristatus seeds begin to germinate on the fourth day and take about eight days to grow from seedling to become complete sprouts. Count I ranged from day 5-6 and count II on days 10-11. Tuban accession has the highest germination rate of 72.97%. The results of this research can be considered as new information, regarding information about the diversity of morphological, flowering characters and the ability of O. aristatus seed to germinate.

Biodiversitas 20: 338-343. Recently, there has been a growing interest in research concerning the possible use of plant extracts as alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Essential oils are among the best-known natural substances with insecticidal properties. These compounds may act as fumigants, contact insecticides, repellents, antifeedants and may affect growth and development of the insects. In an attempt to find a natural and inexpensive method for the control of stored-product pests, contact toxicity of essential oils of Nepeta cataria, Nepeta pogonosperma, Nepeta glomerulosa. and Nepeta binaloudensis. were investigated on adult insects of Sitophilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) in vitro condition. Chemical Composition, repellency and fumigant toxicity of the essential oils were investigated. Chemical composition of the essential oils of above plants were identified by GC-MS. 4a?,7?,7a?-nepetalactone (82.74 %) was major component of N. cataria and also different isomers of nepetalactone were among the major compounds in N. Pogonosperma and N. binaloudensis oils. In fumigants bioassay, N. glomerulosa (124.318?L/L air) showed the highest toxicity against S. oryzae adults, followed by N.pogonosperma (150.49?L/L air) and N. cataria (152.630?L/L air), respectively. Also, the S. oryzae was repelled by N. cataria (91.61%) and N. binaloudensis (91.50 %), respectively.

Irawati W, Ompusunggu NP, Susilowati DN, Yuwono T. 2019. Molecular and physiological characterization of indigenous copper-resistant bacteria from Cikapundung River, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 344-349. The use of indigenous bacteria as bioremediation agents in wastewater treatments plant is a promising solution for tackling the environmental problem. The objectives of this research were to establish the phylogenetic tree and physiological characterization of copper-resistant bacteria isolated from Cikapundung River, West Java, Indonesia. A phylogenetic tree was constructed based on 16S rDNA sequences. Physiological characterization including growth and the potency of bacterial strain for copper accumulation and copper removal was also studied. Five highly copper-resistant bacteria designated as strains CN1, CN2, CN5, CN6, and CN8 have been isolated from Cikapundung river with the MICs (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) of 5 mM-8mM. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis showed that strains CN1 and CN6 belong to Klebsiella pneumoniae with the similarity of 99%. Meanwhile, strain CN2, CN5, and CN8 belong to Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Acinetobacter sp. and Escherichia coli with the similarity of 99%, 96%, and 95%, respectively. The highest resistant bacterial isolates were strains CN6 and CN8 with the MICs of 8 mM. The highest accumulation capability was found in strain CN1 with a total of 4.62 mg/g dry weight of cells. Meanwhile, strain CN8 demonstrated the highest copper removal with the value of 48.15%.
