Abstract. Wiranti D, Nurtjahya E, Dahelmi. 2019. Short Communication: The diversity of butterflies (Superfamily Papilionoidea) as a success indicator of tin-mined land revegetation. Biodiversitas 20: 1923-1928. Some former tin-mining areas in Belitung District have been revegetated. With the increase of vegetation age, the environmental quality changes, and so does the diversity of insects living in the vegetated areas. The objective of this study was to propose the use of butterfly diversity as a success indicator of tin-mined land revegetation. The research was conducted at six locations in Belitung District, consisting of one tin-mined land that had not been revegetated, four revegetated tin-mined lands with different ages of vegetation, namely 1-5 years, 5-10 years, 10-20 years, more than 20 years, and primary forest in Gunung Tajam. The research used the Pollard walk method and specimens were obtained using insect nets. The results showed that the highest diversity of butterflies was recorded in primary forest (31 species), followed by vegetated mined lands with the following ages of vegetation: > 20 years (21 species), 10-20 years (15 species), 5-10 years (14 species ), and 1-5 years (7 species), and the lowest diversity was found in tin-mined land that had not been revegetated (2 species). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index in tin- mined land that had not been revegetated was low, namely 0.56 while in the revegetated tin mined land was medium, i.e., 1.47 – 2.96 and in primary forest was high, i.e., 3.2. The diversity of butterflies in revegetated land increased with the increasing age of vegetation, and the community similarity index between revegetated land and forest also increased with the increasing age of vegetation. Therefore, the diversity of butterflies may be used as a success indicator of revegetation in former tin mining areas.

Abstract. Dako FX, Purwanto RH, Faida LRW, Sumardi. 2019. Community’s social capital in the management of Mutis Timau Protected Forest in Timor Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2177-2187. The social capital of the community around Mutis Timau Protected Forest in Timor Island is unexplored. In fact, its social capital plays an important role to support sustainable management of the forest viewed from the ability of the community to work together in achieving common goals in groups and organizations. This study aimed to investigate the elements of community’s social capital (i.e. norms, beliefs, and networks) in nine villages located in and around Mutis Timau Protected Forest administratively managed by the Forest Management Unit of South Central Timor District using quantitative survey approach. The result of the study showed that two villages have strong social capital while seven villages have moderate category. Overall, the communities have strong level on the elements of trust in individuals and others, and knowledge and understanding on unwritten rules, but have moderate level on the elements of written rules/regulations, trust in institutions and regulations, organizational network, and participation network. Community participation increases the understanding of written rules, institutional trust and improves the development of social networks (organizational networks and participation) between groups. This results can be used as a reference for the Forest Management Unit of South Central Timor District when developing cooperation with communities that have traditional knowledge and local wisdom through norms, beliefs, and networks in managing and utilizing natural resources in Mutis Timau Protected Forest. Furthermore, the involvement of people with social capital in managing Mutis Timau Protected Forest can maintain forest sustainability and improve community welfare.

Prediction of genetic gain in Ficus variegata Blume progeny trial based on breeding values. The aim of this study was to estimate the breeding value based on components variance and genetic gain prediction of Ficus variegata Blume using REML/BLUP. A total of 17 families of Ficus variegata Blume were evaluated at three years after planting at progeny trial in Mangunan, Bantul, Yogyakarta laid out in Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD). Estimation of variance family (height and diameter) were ± 5% of total variance. Narrow-sense individual heritability was moderate (0.27 and 0.21 respectively) indicated promising genetic improvement. Strong genetic correlation of height and diameter (rG=0.9) indicated that improving a trait will improving others. BLUP analysis for diameter trait showed that the best individual value from best family selection was appropriated with restriction 10 family and 5 individual per family and genetic gain prediction was 15.83% gave acceptable rate of inbreeding 2% per generation.

Abstract. Perumal M, Wasli ME, Ho SY. 2019. Influences of inorganic and organic fertilizers to morphological quality attributes of Shorea macrophylla seedlings in a tropical nursery. Biodiversitas 20: 2110-2118. Better understanding and implementation of nursery cultural regimes to improve seedling quality with high survival capability and optimal growth potential are one of the pivotal aspects of a successful forest restoration program. An experiment was set to determine the influences of inorganic and organic fertilizers on the morphological quality attributes of Shorea macrophylla (de Vriese) P.S. Ashton seedlings. For seedling production, the pots were filled with a 1:1 mixture of topsoil and sand (v:v), following the standard forest nursery practice. Either a chemical fertilizer (CF, N: P: K = 10: 26: 10) or a blend of 360-day (80% elution of the ingredients at 25°C) controlled-instant release fertilizer (CIRF, N: P: K = 10: 26: 10) or a jellyfish fertilizer (JF, N: P: K = 13.1: 1.7: 0.03) was applied at the rate of 5 g per pot. The findings revealed that the morphological quality attributes of S. macrophylla seedlings treated with JF were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the seedlings treated with CF and CIRF at the end of nursery growing season. Notwithstanding, in terms of seedling quality indicators, seedlings from all the treatments were fit to the general expectations of a balanced root to shoot ratio values (RS < 2) and the seedlings raised in the nursery were of sub-optimal quality. Consequently, stock quality evaluation requires the integration of both morphological and physiological attributes of seedlings that provides a more effective appraisal of the fitness of seedlings to become established for field planting.

Abstract. Kuspradini H, Putri AS, Egra S, Yanti. 2019. Short Communication: In vitro antibacterial activity of essential oils from twelve aromatic plants from East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2039-2042. In the aim of this works was to investigate the antibacterial activity of twelve essential oils against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, oral pathogen causing dental caries. The essential oils were collected by a steam distillation method. Refractive index was measured by using a refractometer. The antibacterial activity of essential oils was determined using an agar well diffusion method. The yields of essential oils varied with the plant species. The steam distillation yielded clear to yellowish essential oils. Refractive indexes of oil were found to be in the range of 1.344 to 1.500. Syzigium sp. appeared to be more abundant in oil (1.54%) than the other plant species, while C. odorata was poorer (0.04%). All of the essential oils tested showed a varied level of inhibition zone (0-53.65 mm) against S. mutans and S. sobrinus. The oil from leaves of Cymbopogon citratus had the highest activity against S. sobrinus and S. mutans (53.15 and 52.85 mm, respectively). On the other hand, the Magnolia x alba oil showed the lowest activity against S. mutans and S. sobrinus (10.50 and 11.65 mm, respectively). The research results demonstrated that the essential oil in this study has the potency for development of dental health products for preventing and treating oral infections.

Abstract. Authors. 2019. Economic valuation of the Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1983-1989. The Danau Sentarum ecosystem in West Kalimantan, Indonesia is officially protected by its status as an Indonesian national park. Nevertheless, it remains under severe threat of deforestation. Rainforest destruction has already caused a decline in ecosystem functions and services. In addition, it is affecting numerous economic activities in and around the Danau Sentarum National Park. The objectives of this study are to determine the total economic value (TEV) of the Danau Sentarum National Park and look for appropriate mechanisms to realize such values. Survey methods were used in this research. 180 respondents were selected by random sampling method from three Management Section National Park (MSNP). TEV in this research was restricted on direct use value, indirect use value and option value. Estimation of DSNP ecosystem benefits was approached by market price, travel cost method, contingent valuation method, and opportunity cost adjusted for the benefits calculated. The direct use value of Danau Sentarum National Park is IDR 18.5 billion/year while the indirect use value of Danau Sentarum National Park is IDR 34.2 billion/year. The option value of Danau Sentarum National park is IDR 86.2 billion/year. The total economic value resulted in Danau Sentarum National Park is IDR 139,1 billion/year, equivalent to an average of IDR 1.1 million/year for the total park area (132,000 ha). When compared to the TEV of the DSNP, such costs amounted to only 4.87 percent compared to the value of the benefits Based on monetary values of ecosystem services that are provided by this park we could assess the mechanisms to finance the park’s conservation and sustainable use. This will help the self-management of national parks.

Abstract. Rimadiyani W, Krisanti M, Sulistiono. 2019. Macrozoobenthos community structure in the Western Segara Anakan Lagoon, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1588-1596. Anthropogenic activity along the river and around the coastal area will potentially generate waste as it can cause the decline of water quality and affect the lives of macrozoobenthos. This study aimed to study macrozoobenthos community structure in western Segara Anakan Lagoon and its relationship with water physical-chemical quality. The study was conducted from June to November 2016, at six stations of the lagoon. Macrozoobenthos obtained during the study consisted of four phyla (Annelida, Mollusca, Crustacea, and Sipuncula), six classes, and 33 genera. The highest abundance of macrozoobenthos was at Station 6 (193 ind./m2) dominated by Malacostraca and the lowest abundance of macrozoobenthos was at Station 1 (13 ind./m2) dominated by Bivalvia. Diversity, Evenness and dominance indices of the macrozoobenthos were 0.0-2.0, 0-0.8, and 0.4-1.0, respectively, indicating a medium ecologically stressed. Mud substrate condition with high percentage of organic material affected the community structure of the macrozoobenthos expressed by a high density and diversity, but low dominance indices.

Abstract. Makmur M, Zain M, Marlida Y, Khasrad, Jayanegara A. 2019. Fatty acids composition and biohydrogenation reduction agents of tropical forages. Biodiversitas 20: 1917-1922. The study was conducted to determine the composition of fatty acids, measured rumen biohydrogenation reduction agents (total phenols and total tannins) content and selected promising plants in various species of tropical forages. Ten species of tropical forages, namely, Panicum maximum, Cynodon plectostachyus, Pennisetum purpurephoides, Pennisetum purpureum, Brachiaria decumbens, Glyricidia sepium, Calliandra calothyrsus, Stylosanthes guaianensis, Leucaena leucocephala and Indigofera zollingeriana were used in this study. The fatty acids composition (% of total identified fatty acids) which were dominant in grasses were C18: 3n-3 (29%), C16: 0 (28%) and C18: 2n-6 (23%). Whereas in legumes, the significantly higher composition of fatty acids was C18: 3n-3 (42%) followed by C16: 0 (17%) and C18: 2n-6 (17%). The average poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) composition in grasses was relatively lower (44.6%) than legumes (59%). Likewise the content of total phenols and total tannins (g/100g DM) of grasses (0.91 and 0.41) and legumes (1.72 and 0.70). The selection of the forage plant species was based on the criteria of PUFA composition and biohydrogenation reduction agents using TOPSIS method. The results obtained show that B. decumbens (grass) and I. zollingeriana (legume) had the highest preference value of 0.74 and 0.87, respectively. In conclusion, B. decumbens and I. zollingeriana are forage species that have potential to provide healthier ruminant products.

Activities and molecular characterization of petroleum hydrocarbons degrading rhizobacteria from mangrove plants (Rhizophora sp.) in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 21-27. The increasing number of human population density around mangrove ecosystems has resulted in its pollution, particularly oil spills. Rhizobacteria have metabolic abilities that make them possible to live in polluted environmental conditions and the potential to be biological agents for oil remediation. However, investigations of rhizobacteria especially from rhizospheres of mangrove plants (Rhizophora sp.) and their potential use in remediation remains limited. Therefore, the purposes of this research were to investigate the ability of selected isolate in the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons and identify its isolate using 16S rRNA gene. Observation of that degradation ability was conducted by inoculating the isolate in Bushnell-Haas Minimal Salt (BHMS) medium containing crude petroleum 0.01 %. After 10 days of incubation, the degradation hydrocarbons were analyzed by measuring Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) using Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) method. Four rhizobacteria isolate from rhizospheres of mangrove plants (Rhizophora sp), NMKP1, NMKP2, NMKP3, and NMKP4 were analyzed based on their growth in Bushnell-Haas Minimal Salt (BHMS) medium containing crude petroleum 0.01 %. The results revealed that NMKP4 isolate had the highest specific growth rate. In addition, it could degrade those hydrocarbons pollutants as much of 98.72 % within 10 days. Based on molecular characterization showed that NMKP4 isolate was in the same cluster as Pseudomonas sp. CO03.

The effects of decomposing mangrove leaf litter and its tannins on water quality and the growth and survival of tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) post-larvae. Biodiversitas 20: 2750-2757. Shrimp farming in Demak, Indonesia is often practiced in silvo-aquaculture systems in which mangrove trees are planted on pond bunds. As such, mangrove leaves and its substrates may have impact on penaeid shrimp production. In this area, mangrove re-growth proceeded with Avicennia marina while planting is mostly done with Rhizophora apiculata. We compared the effects of decomposing fresh leaves of A. marina and R. apiculata on water quality and on the performance of Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL). A hundred of PL21 (postlarvae aged 21 days with weight of 0.28 g) were stocked in each of 30 aerated tanks containing 800 liters of brackish water (salinity of 21 ppt) for 37 days. Five treatments with three replicates for each mangrove species were assigned by adding into the tanks of 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 g L-1 of air-dried leave, 0.125 of g L-1 minced leave and 0.125 g L-1 of leachate of minced leaves. The PLs were fed 3 times daily with pellets at 10 % of initial total body weight. Water quality parameters were recorded daily. Tannin, H2S and NH3-N concentrations were measured every ten days. Prawn's body weight (BW) was measured and specific growth rate (SGR, % day-1) and survival rate (SR, %) were calculated after the end of experiment. Results were analyzed with ANOVA and Pearson's correlation. The results showed that tannin in decomposing mangrove leaf litter up to a concentration of 0.5 mg g-1 did not have a significant effect on water quality and on the growth and survival of P. monodon PL. However, increasing leaf litter concentrations showed an increase in NH3-N concentration due to organic matter degradation. The accumulation of NH3-N may have caused the slow growth of shrimp PL in A. marina treatment. Shrimp PL in leaf litter leachates treatment has a higher growth rate than those PL in regular leaf litter in relation to nutritional value. Survival and growth varied from 62 ±14 to 70 ± 8% and 3.1±2.1 to 5.5±1.2% day-1, respectively. Although decomposing mangrove leaves of A. marina and R. apiculata had no toxic effects on P. monodon PL up to a concentration of 1.25 g L-1, but causing severe mortality for shrimp in tanks without water exchange. As a conclusion, the present of mangrove leaves in brackish water ponds with insufficient water exchange can be harmful to shrimps. However, if the water exchange is good, decomposed mangrove leaves can become organic fertilizer that beneficial for the growth of natural food for the shrimps
