Chili veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV) is a major prevalent virus that potentially reduces the yield of chili pepper by more than 50% in Indonesia. Therefore, the development of a ChiVMV-resistant cultivar is necessary to ensure satisfactory chili pepper production. Mutation breeding is a promising tool available to produce virus-resistant plants via the induction of new alleles due to point mutations within the existing chili germplasm. This research was conducted to assess the genetic variation of ten promising (M6) EMS-induced mutant lines of chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) potentially resistant to ChiVMV by their morphological characteristics and SSR profile, as well as identify potential mutants based on agronomic traits. The ten chili pepper mutant lines used in the present study were derived from the shoot tips of a Gelora cultivar treated with 0.5% ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) as a chemical mutagen. The performance of the respective promising chili pepper mutant lines both at a molecular and morphological level was observed. Phenotypic analysis showed that all the promising chili pepper mutant lines underwent significant morphological changes. Of these, the phenotype coefficient variation (PCV) values were higher than the genotype coefficient variation (GCV) values for all the traits observed. High heritability (h2) was found for the canopy area, length of the fruit stalk, fruit weight, fruit weight per plant, thick fruit flesh, leaf width, leaf length, and fruit storage duration. A total of 52 alleles were detected from the five polymorphic SSR loci with 5.2 average alleles/loci. A dendrogram was generated and revealed two groups with five mutants clustered separately from their parents which could be valuable for further improvement.

In vitro micropropagation is an efficient biotechnological strategy for conservation and commercial plantlet production. The ultimate success of in vitro microporapagation depends on the ability to transfer plants out of culture, known as acclimatization stage. The morphology, anatomy and physiology of plantlets in in vitro culture conditions is different from the plants in environment condition (greenhouse), therefore they are unable to compete with soil microbes and to cope with the environmental conditions. The aim of this research is to determine stomata morphology and distribution of Paraphalaenopsis spp (Orchidaceae) from in vitro growth and greenhouse conditions. The leaf stomata cells of Paraphalaenopsis spp. (Paraphalaenopsis serpentilingua, Paraphalaenopsis labukensis and Paraphalaenopsis laycockii) was undertaken by observing the stomata preparation of the upper leaf and lower leaf by using microscope fitted with optic visual seven. The descriptive method was used to describe the stomata morphology by observing the epidermis of longitudinal section and stomata length of upper and lower leaf by using a microscope. The results showed that these plants had anomocytic type of stomata cells. The distributions of stomata are in the upper and lower epidermis leaf in all Paraphalaenopsis spp from in vitro growth and greenhouse.

Biodiversitas 21: 1373-1378. The opudi fish (Telmatherina prognatha) is endemic fish in Matano Lake, South Sulawesi. This study aims to analyze food habits of the opudi fish. This study was conducted from March 2018 to February 2019 in the Matano Lake at six sampling sites in Lawa River, Wotu pali, Salonsa Beach, Utuno, Petea River, and Tanah Merah. The sampling was taken using bag nets with 0.5 inches of mesh size. Food observation was carried out by examining the stomach of the fish. Analysis of the diet includes index stomach content (ISC), occurrent frequency and index of preponderance (IP). The fish was consisted of 687 males and 478 females. Stomach contents of the fish consisted of three kinds of foods such part of insect, debris and plankton. IP for male consisted of part of insect (58%), debris (13%), and plankton (Nitzschia sp. Eunotia sp. 11%). IP for female consisted of part of insect (33%), Navicula sp. and debris (17%), followed by Nitzschia sp. (13%).

Abstract. Arrijani, Rizki M. 2019. Vegetation analysis and population of tarsier (Tarsius spectrumgurskyae) at Batuputih Nature Tourism Park, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 530-537. Tangkasi or Tarsius (Tarsius spectrumgurskyae) is a world’s smallest primate, which categorized as an endemic and protected species inhabited Sulawesi Island. Batuputih Nature Tourism Park (Batuputih NTP) at Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve, Bitung City, North Sulawesi, Indonesia is one of the habitats of the primate. The research aimed to characterize the habitats of Tarsius that include physical and vegetation characteristics and to figuring out the nest distribution and estimation of the population of this species. The vegetation data were sampled using a quadrat sampling technique around Tarsius nests. The Tarsius population was estimated along a 2 km transect line with the distance 50 m to the left and right across the line (the total width 100 m (0.1 km). Meanwhile, to calculate population abundance (Overall estimate of population size/abundance) can be obtained by multiplying population densities with the total area of ??all observations. The result revealed that the vegetation types of Tarsius habitats were dominated by tree species which associated with Liana from the family Araliaceae, among them include Spathodea campanulata, Ailanthus integrifolia, Kleinhovia hospital, Alstonia scholaris, Garuga floribunda, Arenga pinnata, and two sleeping trees without accosiated from the species of Ficus tinctoria and Ficus variegata. Tarsius life in groups with 2-8 individuals per group. The estimation of population density was found that there were 270 individuals/km or 2.7 individuals/ha and their total abundance around 1660 individuals of Tarsius lived in Batuputih NTP.

Abstract. Yudaputra A. 2020. Modelling potential current distribution and future dispersal of an invasive species Calliandra calothyrsus in Bali Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 674-682.  Calliandra calothyrsus Meisn. is relatively well-adapted in abandoned areas, degraded lands, and poor nutrient soils. It tends to reproduce rapidly and be invasive in certain landscapes as it often dominates the vegetation. This study aimed to understand the potential current distribution and the population dispersal of C. calothyrsus across Bali Island using Random Forest (RF) and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) models. Thirteen environmental variables, including several climatic variables, topography, soil characteristics were used as predictors. The occurrence records of C. calothyrsus were obtained from direct field survey in which square plots 10 x 10 m were used to collect the population structure data. The Rangeshifter software was used to understand the population dynamic and dispersal pattern. The results showed that the two models (RF and MaxEnt) have the AUC>0.9 which means those models are excellent in predicting the potential current distribution of C. calothyrsus. Furthermore, the RF model has the TSS and Kappa value of >0.90 which means it has almost perfect agreement between the prediction and the real observation. On the other hand, the TSS and Kappa value of MaxEnt were >0.70 indicating it has a substantial agreement. The population structure in the field showed that the number of juvenile individuals dominated all plots compared to seedlings and mature individuals. The simulation analysis showed that the population tends to have bigger population in the next 50 years by dispersing throughout neighbor cells or areas in which the origin occurrence points were recorded.

Abstract. Yusra S, Hidayat C, Pranoto Y, Anwar C. 2020. Physical and chemical characteristics of stem starch and sheath flour from oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). Biodiversitas 21: 896-902. Replanting old oil palm plantation with a new plant produces a large volume of cleared trees. Yet, the utilization of these by-products is still limited. The objective of this research was to explore and characterize the physicochemical properties of the oil palm stem starch (SS) and sheath flour (SF). SF and SS were extracted by a wet extraction method. Results showed that starch contents of SS and SF (after three times of washing) were 95.56±0.01% and 37.03 ± 0.72%, respectively. Amylose and amylopectin contents of SS were higher than that of sheath starch. Besides, SF contained high protein (19.28% db) and lipid (9.27% db). Protein was also confirmed by FTIR analysis. SF also contained polyphenol. The starch granular was smooth with a clean surface. The granules of SF are classified as very small granules (2-5 µm) while those of SS as small to medium granules (5-25 µm). Polymorph analysis showed that SF and SS had a type-C and B-type, respectively. SF did not have pasting temperature due to the presence of lipid, protein, and polyphenol. Washing of the flour with water decreased protein, lipid and ash contents. It resulted in a decrease in yield about 1.8 times. SS has a pasting temperature of about 71.55°C. Paste viscosity reached a maximum of about 5707 cps. In conclusion, SS that had high viscosity may be used as a thickener and SF may be used for a source of the modified starch to produce such as dextrin and glucose syrup.

Short Communication: Landscape composition alters parasitoid wasps but not their host diversity in tropical agricultural landscapes. Biodiversitas 21: 1702-1706. The diversity of parasitoid wasps and their hosts in an agricultural landscape is affected by crop management and habitat conditions around crop fields. The composition of agricultural landscapes that are dominated by non-crop or natural habitats are assumed to be able to support the presence of parasitoid wasps as biological control of pests. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of landscape composition on the diversity of parasitoid wasps and their hosts in agricultural landscapes. The research observations were conducted on six fields of long-bean cultivation located in Bogor District, West Java Province, Indonesia. Parasitoid wasps were collected by hand-collecting of their hosts (lepidopteran larvae) within 60 m distance transect to each long-bean field. In total, 17 species of parasitoid wasps and 12 species of lepidopteran larvae were found from all agricultural landscapes. A parasitoid wasp, Microplitis manilae was found in all long-bean fields (except Bantarjaya) and only parasitized the tobacco cutworm (Spodoptera litura). The tomato looper, Chrysodeixis chalcites had the highest associated parasitoids and was also parasitized by Braconidae sp5 which was also a parasitoid of S. litura. Based on the analysis results, the patch numbers of natural habitats had a positive effect on the diversity of parasitoid wasps and had no effect on the diversity of lepidopteran larvae. In conclusion, landscape compositions with patchy natural habitats have an important role to preserve beneficial insects and maintain ecosystem services in tropical agricultural landscapes.

Abstract. Yudaputra A, Fijridiyanto I, Cropper WPJr. 2020. The potential impact of climate change on the distribution pattern of Eusideroxylon zwageri (Bornean Ironwood) in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 326-333. Eusideroxylon zwageri Teijsm & Binn. is a vulnerable tree species with considerable economic value. The high demand for its wood makes this species vulnerable. Population vulnerabilities of E. zwageri include habitat loss, land-use change, and forest encroachment. An additional potential risk factor is climate change, with a possible increase in temperature of about 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century. Climate is considered to be a principal factor that determines the distribution of many species. This study addresses the potential current and future distribution of E. zwageri under climate change. Seven predictor climate variables are selected from 19 climatic variables using VIF (Variance Inflation Factor) to eliminate multicollinearity among variables. The spatial data is prepared using Geographic Information System (GIS). Six species distribution models (RF, SVM, MARS, GAM, GLM) and the ensemble model are applied to understand the potential current geographical distribution of E. zwageri. For risk assessment, the potential future distribution is predicted using the ensemble model only. All models are run using R open-source software. In model evaluation, all models have AUC value >0.80, indicating those models are good predictive models. All predictive models have the TSS >0.60 which means those models having a useful agreement between prediction and real observation. Precipitation seasonality, isothermality, and precipitation of the coldest quarter are the most important model variables that influence the current and future distribution of E. zwageri. Four models (RF, SVM, GAM, GLM) produce similar predictive maps of potential current distribution. MARS produces a slightly different predictive map. The future projection of ensemble model shows that the distribution area is more likely shifted and decreased from the current to 2050 and 2070.

Analysing the potential of non-timber forest product (NTFP) plants in Mount Halimun Salak National Park (MHSNP) is one of the important aspects in supporting conservation and improving the economic status of communities around the forest. This study aims to determine the economic potential and benefits of damar plants (Agathis dammara) in MHSNP area of Kawah Ratu Resort, Sukabumi District, West Java, Indonesia along with analysis of damar plant forest and physico-chemical analysis of the copal/resin. The selection of research village was by purposive sampling and the selection of respondents was by random sampling. Forest vegetation in the Kawah Ratu Resort is entirely dominated by damar plants. The Important Value Index (IVI) of damar plant trees is 300% and the density is 582 trees/ha. The quality of copal from Kawah Ratu Resort meets SNI standards in parameters like ash content, soft point and melting point, while the saponification number is above SNI standard. Level of dung in copal chunks meet SNI standards and has better quality than copal in the form of powder. The present average income of farmers from resin tapping is Rp 624,000/person /month, which makes an average contribution of 63.08% to the total household income of farmers. But the actual economic potential of gum resin in Kawah Ratu Resort was estimated to be around Rp 596,920,000/month.

Biodiversitas 21: 1091-1100. Jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb) Bosser) is a potential tree species for the development of plantation forests and community forests to supply timber demands. Information on the growth characteristics and wood properties of N. cadamba is important for the present and future development, yet. Those data is not available. This study aimed to assess the variations on growth (height, diameter), pilodyn (Pilodyn®) penetration, and physical properties of wood from core sample; and characterize the wood properties of 12 N. cadamba provenances at Parung Panjang, Bogor. The assessment of growth characteristics, pilodyn penetration, and physical properties of wood from core sample was carried out through census (1030 trees) on all provenance (using non-destructive method). The wood properties analysis was carried out using destructive method to one sample for each of the 12 N. cadamba provenances. Growth characteristics observed were the height (numerical scale pole), diameter (calipers), and pilodyn penetration. Meanwhile, the wood properties consisted of wood density, specific gravity, moisture content, fiber length (light microscope), MFA (x-ray diffraction), MOE, and MOR. The results showed that the correlation between the height and moisture content with pilodyn penetration was weak and positive, while the correlation between diameter, wood density, and specific gravity was weak and negative. The result of non-destructive test showed that Gowa provenance is superior. The results of destructive tests to investigate the wood properties of the twelve provenances showed that Batu Licin provenance is superior in terms of specific gravity and MOE, while Gowa provenance is superior in terms of MOR and fiber length. The results of the wood properties (i.e. density, specific gravity, moisture content, MOE, MOR, MFA, and fiber length) of the 12 N. cadamba provenances showed that the woods can be potentially used as non-structural materials only.
