Biodiversitas 21: 933-940. This study aimed to describe the morphometric diversity and phenotypic relationship among indigenous buffaloes of Banten, Indonesia. In this study, 125 buffaloes from six regions were investigated based on 11 morphometric characters. Morphometric diversity was analyzed using multivariate discriminant analysis. The Euclidean genetic distances were used to estimate the phenotypic relationship among the buffalo populations. The indigenous buffaloes of Banten have high morphometric diversity, with a coefficient from 2.83 to 41.43%. The body length and chest circumference can be used as a morphometric marker to determine potential indigenous buffaloes as their high correlation coefficient value (0.506). The Serang district buffaloes have the highest mean of body length and chest circumference, which shows that this population is potential compared to the populations from other regions. The morphometric of buffalo population from Serang City, Cilegon City, Serang District, and Pandeglang District tend to be homogenous. Meanwhile, Lebak and Tangerang District population tends to heterogeneous. According to Euclidean distance analysis, the proximate phenotypic relationship was between Serang and Pandeglang District's buffalo populations. Our results indicated that morphometric diversity and phenotypic relationships of the populations were related to geographical origins and can be used to determine the potential indigenous of buffaloes.

Preference and development of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst, 1797) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) on whole grain and flour form of five corn varieties. Biodiversitas 21: 564-569. Red flour beetle can cause detrimental loss on stored corn during storage period. The usual forms of stored corn are whole grain and flour form. However, the information about the infestation on both form of stored corn is limited, therefore this research aims to investigate the feeding preference and development of Tribolium castaneum on various corn varieties (Pioneer 21, Pioneer 29, Pertiwi 3, Bisi 18, and Bisma) in whole grain and flour form. The research was conducted on Plant Pest Laboratory, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, University of Brawijaya from February until March 2016. The feeds for treatment were Pioneer 21, Pioneer 29, Pertiwi 3, Bisi 18, and Bisma in whole grain and flour form. The observed variables were the adult presence, adult mortality, the number of eggs, larvae, pupae, F1 progeny emerged, the developmental period of eggs, larvae, and pupae, egg-adult, and life cycle. Data analyzed by ANOVA and followed by LSD at 5%. The results showed that T. castaneum was more preferred to colonize and oviposition in Pioneer 21 flour than others i.e. 13.33 adults and 145 eggs. Similarly, on the population growth of T. castaneum, the highest number of eggs, larvae, pupae, and F1 progeny emerged was on Pioneer 21 flour i.e. 196 eggs, 179.67 larvae, 83.67 pupae, and 73.33 adults, respectively. Moreover, the fastest developmental period of egg, larva, and pupa, egg-adult and life cycle was also in Pioneer 21 flour i.e., 5.5, 26.77, 5.97, 38.23, and 41.87 days, respectively. Pioneer 21 corn variety has high protein content, therefore it is suitable for T. castaneum development.

Growth improvement of Falcataria moluccana inoculated with MycoSilvi grown in post-mining silica sand soil medium amended with soil ameliorants. Biodiversitas 21: 422-427. High aluminum content in soil of post-mining silica sand area inhibits plant growth. MycoSilvi is an inoculum of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (FMA) enriched with Mycorrhizal Helper Bacteria (MHBs) which plays an important role for improving plant growth in unfertile soil medium. The aims of this research were to analyze the growth response of Falcataria moluccana (Miq.) Barneby & JW Grimes) seedlings treated with MycoSilvi and soil ameliorants (compost and lime) in post-mining silica sand soil medium. The randomized complete design with factorial scheme was used in this study. The results showed that the interactions of MycoSilvi and Soil ameliorant significantly increased height, diameter, biomass and mycorrhizal colonization of F. moluccana. Combination of MycoSilvi variant 3 and lime increased height, diameter, and biomass of F. moluccana by 965%, 147%, and 1427% respectively, as compared to those of control plants. The mycorrhizal roots colonization in those treatments was 98%. The addition of compost and lime increased pH and decreased Aluminum and Fe of the soil medium. F. moluccana seedlings have high mycorrhizal dependency on post-mining silica sand soil media. These results indicate prospective uses of MycoSilvi and soil ameliorants for improving plant growth in unfertile soil medium, including soil in post-mining area.

Abstract. Isworo S, Oetari PS. 2020. Mangrove vegetation and bird communities around Tegal Port, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1551-1560. The ecological balance in Tegal harbor area needs to get serious attention due to the impacts of Tegal Port activities. For this purpose, the diversity of mangrove and avifauna (bird) can be used as bio-indicators of the ecological stability of the area. This study aimed to assess and analyze the diversity of plants and avifauna (birds) that live in mangrove and coastal zones around Tegal Port development area. Data collection was conducted using purposive random sampling method on two sites for vegetation and three sites for avifauna. The importance value index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Sorensen’s similarity index was calculated for the vegetation. For birds, we calculated the diversity and similarity index as well as identified their conservation status based on the IUCN Red List, CITES and government regulations. In terms of vegetation, Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina dominate Site 2 (Tegalsari) while Casuarina equisetifolia and R. mucronata dominate Site 3 (Alam Indah Beach). Overall, the vegetation has low biodiversity index and similarity between sites is also low. For bird, there are 37 species from 18 families. Site 1 (Muara Reja) has the highest number of species with 29 species, followed by Site 2 (Tegalsari) with 25 species, and Site 3 (Alam Indah Beach) with 22 species. The three sites have moderate diversity index and there is high similarity index between sites. All bird species found in the study sites are listed as Least Concern under IUCN Red List, while there are two species protected under national protection law, i.e. Ardea alba and Glareola maldivarum. In general, the condition of mangrove vegetation around Tegal Port has low diversity. This suggests that the pressure on the environment is quite high, causing only few plant species to be able to live and dominate the ecosystem. The limited vegetation also causes birds community, especially the protected A. alba and G. maldivarum in Site 2, becomes increasingly difficult to find, because places to find food, breeding places and places to rest are disturbed.

Phenological behavior of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica)  forest to snow and precipitation variability in Boutaleb and Babors Mountains, Algeria. Biodiversitas 21: 239-245. Understanding the changes in snow and precipitation variability and how forest vegetation response to such changes is very important to maintain the long-term sustainability of the forest. However, relatively few studies have investigated this phenomenon in Algeria. This study was aimed to find out the response of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica (Endl.) G.Manetti ex Carrière) forest in two areas (i.e Boutaleb and Babors Mountains) and their response to the precipitation and snow variability. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) generated from satellite images of MODIS time series was used to survey the changes of the Atlas cedar throughout the study area well as dataset of monthly precipitation and snow of the province of Setif (northeast of Algeria) from 2000 to 2018. Descriptive analysis using Standarized Precipitation Index (SPI) showed the wetter years were more frequent in the past than in the last two decades. The NDVI values changes in both areas with high values were detected in Babors Mountains with statistically significant differences. Our findings showed important difference in Atlas cedar phenology from Boutaleb mountains to Babors Mountains which likely related to snow factor.

Abstract. Abbas B, Tjolli I, Munarti. 2020. Genetic diversity of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu) accessions based on plastid cpDNA matK gene as DNA barcoding. Biodiversitas 21: 219-225. Metroxylon sagu Rottb is one of the plant species including in the Palmae family that deposits starch in the trunk. Sago palm was reported has high capability to produce a large amount of starch and large variation starch qualities which were mostly influenced by genetic factors. The objectives of this study are revealed sequence chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) associated with matK genes for the genetic diversity identification of sago palm accessions. Plant materials used in the studies were derived from Sago Research Center (SRC) collection. DNA extraction has adopted the procedure of Plant Genomic DNA Mini Kit. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed by using primer sets of MatK-1RKIM-f and MatK-3FKIM-r. DNA PCR product was sequenced by the 1st Base Asia, Singapore. Results of the study showed that the cpDNA sequence associated with matK genes in the genome of sago palm showed differences among accessions. Molecular diversities of sago palm accessions based on matK gene showed sago palm accessions separated into two genotypes. Genotype-1 incorporated of ten individuals of 15 accessions and genotype-2 incorporated five individuals of 15 accessions. A mutation site and deletion site occurred in the sequences of matK gene of the Genotype-2. Ten of the 15 sequences of the matK gene (belong to Genotype-1) were registered in the GenBank, NCBI as DNA barcoding and authenticity of sago palm germplasm from Papua islands, Indonesia territorials.

Plant diversity and nutrient substances of native edible plant: Case study in Suka Maju and Tamao Villages, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 842-852. The existence of plant diversity which is wild, indigenous and edibles, needs to be preserved. The research locations in Suka Maju and Tamao Village, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan, Indonesia were chosen based on population density. The purpose of this study was to determine the plant diversity and nutritional potential from both of regions. The study method used sampling survey and the data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that from a total of 110 plants, the three local plant names were subjected to one species and nine species were found in both locations. So that from 98 plants consisting of 44 fruits (14 of table fruits and 30 fruits of suka-suka), 30 vegetables and mushrooms, 14 seasonings, 7 nuts, 3 cereals, and tuber. The discovery of rare genera reported from West Kalimantan, they are Hydnocarpus sp, Hodgsonia sp, and Hypoxylon spp. The highest proximate content of carbohydrate is from joluk kusuk seeds (C. lacryma jobil), fats from kepayang seeds (P. edule) and dangkuk seeds (Hydnocarpus sp), protein from sengkubak leaves (A. papuana), ash from keranji (Hypoxylon spp) and dangkuk. The highest Fe and Zn mineral content were found from sengkuang fruit (D. dao) and tepus leaves (E. foetidum), respectively. The results of this survey became an initial recommendation in the development of local wisdom for local food security.

Abstract. Oktaviani D, Priyanto E, Nugroho D. 2020. Length-weight, maturity, and condition factor of torpedo scads (Megalaspis cordyla Linnaeus, 1758) in the Java Sea, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1527-1534. The Java Sea comprises the most extensive ecosystem with high pressure on the biodiversity of marine fish species in Indonesia. Small pelagic fish is the main target among marine fish species in this area for decades to fulfill the need for animal protein for human consumption. Torpedo scads (Megalaspis cordyla Linnaeus, 1758) locally called as tetengkek is one of the common species caught in small pelagic seiners fisheries in the area. The significant increasing trend of annual fish landing could lead to unsustainable long-term harvesting. This study was performed to support baseline information on the biological characteristics of Torpedo scads. Measurements on length, weight, sex, maturity, and gonad weight are the main database that collected from February to December 2017 in the Tegal fishing port, north coast of central Java. A total of 2139 specimens were available for monthly length-frequency measurements, and 601 specimens among them specifically observed for length-weight, sex, maturity stage, and their gonad weight. The result showed that fish caught within a range of 16.0-35.4 cmFL and weight of 40-570 g. The length-weight relationship tends to be isometric with the equation of L = 7.e-03 W3.1511. The male and female ratio at 1.07: 1.0 with most of the fish caught at an immature stage (77% of males and 63% of females). Average Fulton condition factor (Kn) of 1.15­+0.09 (0.86-1.64). A wide range of GSI indicates that torpedo scads partially spawn at each month of the year.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Rhizobium enhance the growth of Samanea saman (trembesi) planted on gold-mine tailings in Pongkor, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 611-616. Revegetation of severely degraded lands, such as gold-mine tailings, requires comprehensive approach including the selection of appropriate tree species and the improvement of soil fertility with the application of microorganisms. This study aimed to analyze the growth of trembesi (Samanea saman (Jacq.) Merr) seedlings inoculated with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and rhizobial bacteria (RB) on gold-mine tailings in Pongkor, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. The AMF, RB, and mixture of AMF and RB were inoculated into S. saman seedlings and then the seedlings were grown on gold mine tailings land. Seedling growth, AMF infection and RB nodulation were observed after 12 weeks after planting. The results showed that the treatments facilitated AMF colonization by up to 20.7% and RB nodulation up to 22 nodules per plant. The inoculation of S. saman seedlings with AMF and RB significantly increased the growth on diameter, biomass, and root length, with values of root-to-shoot ratio of 3.1-4.3. The roots of S. saman seedlings were also able to penetrate the depth of the tailings solum. These results showed that AMF and RB application effectively increased the growth of S. saman seedlings in the gold tailings field.

Abstract. Roesma DI, Tjong DH, Aidil DR. 2020. Phylogenetic analysis of transparent gobies in three Sumatran lakes, inferred from mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene. Biodiversitas 21: 43-48. The transparent gobies fish found in three lakes in Sumatra island is known as Rinuak fish (in Maninjau Lake and Singkarak Lake, West Sumatra, Indonesia) or Badar fish (in Siais Lake, North Sumatra, Indonesia), and are morphologically very similar to the Gobiopterus brachypterus. The phylogenetic study was carried out by analyzing 619 base pairs of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in 12 fish individuals from the three lakes. Rinuak and Badar fish in three populations have four haplotypes. The sequence divergences in and between populations are very low (0.0-0.5%). This value indicates that Rinuak and Badar fish are the same species with low genetic diversity. The phylogenetic tree illustrates that this fish belongs to the group of Gobiidae and a sister taxon from G. brachypterus.
