In Algeria, the degradation of the ecosystems induces a loss of biodiversity and an increase in the adverse effects of climate change and anthropogenic actions, especially at the level of the ecosystems of semi-arid zones. This study aims to determine the floristic composition and demographic structures of different stands within the Sidi R'Ghies forest, north-east of Algeria. Data were collected using floristic surveys, diameter measurements at 1.30 m and total height for trees in four plots with size for each plot of 1000 m2. The diversity indices have been calculated on the basis of specific frequencies. The analysis revealed a low floristic richness with 6 woody species belonging to 5 families with the most dominant are the Cupressaceae and Fagaceae (29%). The low density of woody trees (97.78 individuals/ha) was found in Plot 1 and the high density of 205.56 individuals/ha was found in Plot 4. The diametric structure adjusts to the Weibull distribution and shows a predominance of young individuals. The distribution of trees in height classes shows a single distribution with an asymmetric curve. This positive distribution reveals a predominance of individuals with a height between 2 and 8 m (sapling to mature stage). This work, which provides an overview of the state of the floristic diversity of the Sidi R’Ghies forest, allows taking appropriate measures to safeguard our plant resources.

Diversity of gall-inducing insect associated with a superhost plant species: Plant architecture, resource availability and interspecific interactions. Biodiversitas 21: 1182-1189. The role of interspecific competition in the organization of herbivorous insect communities may vary depending on resource availability. Trees are structurally more complex and have greater resource availability for herbivorous insects than shrubs. In this study, we evaluated the roles of plant architecture and interspecific interactions on community organization of the gall-inducing insect associated with trees (adult plants) and shrubs (young plants) of Copaifera langsdorffii. Our results showed that the species composition of gall-inducing insect communities associated with C. langsdorffii differed statistically between trees and shrubs. In addition, the trees presented greater diversity of gall-inducing insects than the shrubs, corroborating the hypothesis of plant architecture. The results of the analysis of null models showed that the co-occurrence of gall-inducing insect species associated with trees not differ from the co-occurrence predicted by chance. Thus, interspecific interactions cannot be used to explain the community organization of the gall-inducing insects on C. langsdorffii trees. On the other hand, the co-occurrence of gall-inducing insect species differed from the co-occurrence predicted by chance when shrubs plants were analyzed, indicating that biotic interactions can shape the structure of the gall-inducing insect community on shrubs. The lower availability of oviposition sites probably generates a dispute for these resources among females of different species of gall-inducing insects only in the shrubs. Therefore, the role of competition in the organization of herbivore insect communities on their host plant may vary depending on the ontogenetic stage of the host plant.

Abstract. Mulu M, Ntelok ZRE, SII P, Mulu H. 2020. Ethnobotanical knowledge and conservation practices of indigenous people of Mbeliling Forest Area, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1861-1873. The indigenous people of Mbeliling Forest Area, Indonesia have long interacted with nature, in the form of utilizing forest resources for their survival. Therefore it is essential to identify the plants used to support their lives. In addition, they also have traditional institutions that manage the lives within groups. It is necessary to study the forms of environmental conservation applied by the indigenous people. This research is qualitative research with an ethnographic method and case studies. The research data is collected through observation and interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results showed that total of 158 plant species belonging to126 genera and 64 families are used in the study area. They include 26 species used for food, 6 species for drinks, 60 species for medicine, 38 species for construction, 26 species for craft, 8 species for coloring, 6 species for cosmetics, 7 species for pesticides, and 16 species for traditional rituals. In terms of conservation, indigenous people work together with the village government. The forest area is divided into ulayat forests (communal forest) and protected forests. The management of communal forests is the right of indigenous people so that it functions as a production forest. Although communal forests are the right of indigenous people, which is managed by customary leaders, its utilization is affected by the status of protected forests established by the government. In protected forests, there are no plantations or agricultural activities.

Abstract. Partasasmita R, Cahyani NT, Iskandar J. 2020. Local knowledge of the community in Cintaratu Village, Pangandaran, Indonesia on traditional landscapes for sustainable land management. Biodiversitas 21: 3606-3616.  Cintaratu, a village in Parigi Sub-district, Pangandaran District, West Java province, Indonesia has various landscapes. The recent developments of the community reflect a shift in values towards the attainment of economic prosperity. However, scaling-up the use of landscapes in this capacity can cause negative impacts. A cultural approach to landscape management can assist the village community in identifying sustainable practices. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the community's knowledge of the variety of traditional landscapes that exist in Cintaratu Village and the historical influence on variations in the landscapes. The qualitative method was applied in this study. The result of the study showed that some landscapes, i.e., leuweung karamat (sacred forest), kebon (garden), sawah (rice field), astana (grave/ tomb), pamukiman (residential area), pekarangan (homegarden), walungan (river), solokan (small river), tampian (bathing and washing place for residents), and balong (fish pond) are documented in Cintaratu Village. On the basis of ecological history, it has been revealed that village community’s behaviors have changed various landscapes in Cintaratu Village. Conservation efforts carried out by the people themselves towards the traditional landscapes are usually associated with a customary prohibition or pamali that develops in the village community. The local people of Cintaratu recognize various landscapes that can be classified as natural and cultural landscapes. Based on the information provided by informants, the village landscape changes can be traced from the 1780s to 2019. The history of these landscape changes is the result of various factors, including an increase in population density, the implementation of government policies, and market economic development in the village.

Traditional conservation and human-primate conflict in Ujungjaya Village Community, Ujung Kulon, Banten, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 521-529. In the past, rural Sundanese people’s interactions with wild animals, including nonhuman primates (hereafter ‘primates’), is influenced by traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) with foundations in various myths and beliefs. Today, because of environmental changes, development of a market economy, cultural change, and the enhancement of agricultural technology, the beliefs and practices associated with TEK have eroded. We aim to describe the present perceptions of primates by the Sundanese people of Ujungjaya Village, Sumur Subdistrict, Ujung Kulon, Banten Province, and demonstrate how these myths and beliefs manifest in behavior towards primates. We use qualitative methods based on an ethnobiological approach to gain insight into people’s perceptions of their natural surroundings. Our results show that the people of Ujungjaya still maintain deep perceptions that are manifested in stories, songs, poems, spells, and invocations that prohibit the killing of primates. However, on their own, these manifestations are insufficient to protect primates from harm as the penetration of market economies and the fragmentation of habitats create the conditions for increased human-primate conflict. Indeed, the people of Ujungjaya sometimes hunt and capture primates for consumption, trading, and medicinal use. As such, laws and regulations designed to promote conservation are insufficient without an understanding of the cultural and socio-economic aspects of people’s lives.

Biodiversitas 21: 505-511. Indonesia is still facing several environmental problems due to improper mining activities, such as tin mining activities in Bangka island. The area of post tin mining closure in this island has left tailing area over unstructured overburden. This condition causes infertile land, which is indicated by low physical, chemical, and biological soil properties for supporting plant growth. Therefore, amelioration material is needed to increase soil fertility in rehabilitating this area. The purposes of the study are to improve soil properties and the use of adaptive plants for land rehabilitation of post tin mining closure. The observation was carried out on plots with ameliorant materials treatment, and no treatment as a control plot. Adaptive plants used are trembesi (Samanea saman), sengon buto (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), and ampupu (Eucalyptus urophylla); while ameliorant materials were mixture of overburden materials, NPK fertilizer, lime (dolomite), topsoil material, and compost, with proportion 49%, 1%, 10%, 20%, 20% of media weight respectively. The results showed that three years after planting, ameliorant treatment plots showed growth percentage of E. urophylla, E. cyclocarpum, and S. saman as 96.1%, 73.4%, and 52.4% respectively, while in the control plots were 94.1%, 93.8%, and 35.0% respectively. The ameliorant treatment plots as compared to control plots, showed a significantly different effect on the growth parameters, both height and diameter for S. saman and E. cyclocarpum, while for E. urophylla, although the ameliorant treatment showed better growth parameters, but the differences were not significant.

Abstract. Putranto HD, Brata B, Yumiati Y. 2020. Ex-situ population of White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus): Studies of density, distribution and bird keepers in Bengkulu, Sumatra. Biodiversitas 21: 865-874. Purpose of this research was to estimate number of White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus) or locally known as murai batu which are kept by Bengkulu's bird keepers, analyze its population density, population distribution, and the profile of bird keepers. Researcher used field observation method by conducting interviews during June-September 2019. Respondents were determined using purposive sampling method and sampling was continued by snowball sampling method. Bird population data were analyzed by using population density formula and population distribution formula, while profile of bird keepers was analyzed descriptively. In 9 sub-districts of Bengkulu City total of 642 birds that are kept by bird keepers in ex-situ habitat, consisting of 434 males and 208 females with sex ratio approximately of 2:1. Population density was 4.23 birds per km2 (2.86 male birds/km2 and 1.37 female birds/km2). Population distribution by a Variance-Mean Ratio formula was 4.8 or VMR > 1. Furthermore, there were 79 keepers consist of 78 male bird keepers (98.7% ) and 1 female keeper (1.27%). Eleven bird keepers (13.9%) were categorized as captive breeders and 68 keepers (86.1%) were categorized as bird hobbyists. In conclusion, density population of ex-situ White-rumped Shama in Bengkulu City was 4.23 birds per km2, and population distribution interpreted as negative binomial distribution. Bird keepers were divided into two groups, captive breeders and bird hobbyists.

Genetic variation of agarwood producing tree (Gyrinops versteegii) from Pongkor, Manggarai District, Flores Island, Indonesia using ISSR molecular markers. Biodiversitas 21: xxxx. Agarwood is a black-colored tree wood that produces distinctive sap because of fungal infections which belong to Thymelaeaceae family (mainly Aquilaria and Gyrinops). Agarwood product is highly valuable that leading to over exploitations by the collectors. To develop the most effective and efficient conservation strategies, genetic information from these plants is required. The aims of this research are to determine the genetic variation and to confirm the species identity of agarwood producing tree (Gyrinops versteegii (Gilg.) Domke) population in Pongkor Community Forest, Pongkor, Manggarai District, Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara. Information of the genetic variation, as well as the phenetic relatedness, were evaluated with inter-simple sequence repeat molecular marker (ISSR) using five primers; Ng2.01, Ng2.06, Ng3.01, Ng3.02, and UBC 855, with two other agarwood producing species as outgroup (Aquilaria filaria and Gyrinops decipiens). Amplified bands from all primers showed 55.17% polymorphic bands in G. versteegii. Genetic variation of G. versteegii identified with Nei’s genetic diversity (h value) obtained at 0.218. Clustering analysis from UPGMA dendrograms formed three major clusters. Degree of similarity of G. versteegii based on the dendrograms obtained at 85.9% using SSM method. The results showed close phenetic relatedness between individuals and relatively high genetic variation of G. versteegii, however, imply the need for strictly maintenance of habitat preservation and larger population size.

Aboveground biomass, productivity and carbon sequestration in Rhizophora stylosa mangrove forest of Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1316-1325. This study was aimed at analyzing the trends of aboveground biomass (AGB), productivity and carbon sequestration of Rhizophora stylosa Griff. forest in Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park (RAWNP), Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The DBH was the best predictor for partial and whole AGB of R. stylosa trees. The mean AGB was 562.76 ton ha-1. The yearly biomass increment of living trees, biomass increment of whole stands, standing dead biomass, and litterfall in R. stylosa forest were estimated as 52.87, 50.09, 2.78 and 12.00 ton ha-1, respectively, while its net primary production was about 64.88 ton ha-1 yr-1 indicating higher mangrove productivity. The total carbon stock in R. stylosa forest was 264.50 ton ha-1, while the annual net carbon budget, carbon gain and carbon input in R. stylosa forest was 23.54, 24.85 and 5.64 ton ha-1. However, the total CO2 stored in R. stylosa forest was 969.83 ton ha-1, while the annual of net CO2 uptake, CO2 gained and CO2 input was 86.33, 91.12 and 20.86 ton ha-1. The higher carbon sequestration and CO2 uptake in R. stylosa forest indicate its significant role in the global carbon accumulation and reducing atmospheric CO2.

Abstract. Andayani S, Dadiono MS, Elwira WT, Setyawan FH. 2020. Potency of aloe extract as immunostimulant for carp (Cyprinus carpio) against Aeromonas salmonicida. Biodiversitas 21: 860-864. The objective of the study was to be able to know the cellular and humoral non-specific immune response to Aeromonas salmonicida after aloe extract administration. This study employed Complete Randomized Design with 3 treatments and 3 replications, control treatment (K), A =2 ppm of aloe extract application in the media, B = 16 ppm of aloe extract in the media, and C = 30 ppm of aloe extract in the media. The extract was given through one-hour soaking at day 0 and day 7, and then challenge-tested to 107 cells.ml-1 of A. salmonicida into the media for one day. Results showed that administration of aloe extract could raise plasma protein levels from 443.0 to 662.0 mg.Kg-1 antibody from 1.2576 to 3.3974, and phagocytic activity from 30.61% to 45.94%. Similarly, the differential value of leucocyte (lymphocyte from 58.6% to 73.70%, neutrophils from 6.09 to 8%, and monocyte from 5.70% to 7.72%). As conclusion, aloe extract at the dose of 2 ppm could raise the cellular and humoral non-specific immune. Therefore, the use of aloe extract as immunostimulant at the dose of 2 ppm applied through immersion could also apply other methods, such as oral and injection.
