Biodiversitas 23: 992-999. Small-scale gold mining has a major impact on living things and the environment due to mercury contamination. Bacteria are known to have a defense mechanism in mercury-contaminated soil. The biofilm produced by bacteria helps them survive and protect them from environmental stresses. This study aimed to find mercury-resistant bacteria capable of forming biofilms from mercury-contaminated soil in small-scale gold mining. Samples for bacterial isolation were mercury-contaminated soil from three gold processing sites in Lombok, Indonesia. The obtained mercury-resistant bacteria were tested to form biofilms on the media according to the test dose. The bacterial biofilms formed were observed, and each biofilm's adsorption capacity was measured. The three bacteria with highest adsorption values were identified molecularly using 16S rDNA. The results showed that most mercury-resistant bacteria were able to form biofilms at a dose of 25 ppm. However, only four bacteria were able to produce biofilms at a dose of 50 ppm. Biofilms of three bacteria had the highest adsorption values, ranging between 2.78-3.5. The three bacteria were identified as Bacillus toyonensis (JGT-F1), Burkholderia cepacia (PJT-K), and Microbacterium chocolatum (PJT-D). This study indicates that biofilm-producing bacteria are one of the remediation agents and can be used in mercury bioremediation.

Biodiversitas 23: 1611-1620. The conversion of protected forests into farm areas decreases biodiversity and increases greenhouse gases. Planting trees using agroforestry patterns desire to overcome these problems. This study aimed to identify plant composition, biodiversity, and calculated carbon stock values to recommend a better agroforestry development. The data collection was carried out in June 2021 from four farmer group associations at Batutegi Protection Forest Management Unit, namely Mahardika, Sinar Harapan, Hijau Makmur, and Cempaka. The agroforestry pattern applied in four Gapoktans is agrisilviculture, with a combination of crops, plantation, and forest trees. The dominant plant species are coffee, pepper, rubber, and bananas. Based on the Importance Value Index, coffee becomes the dominant crop in Hijau Makmur, Mahardika, and Sinar Harapan, while rubber is the dominant crop in Cempaka. The agroforestry pattern applied by respondents has a higher carbon stock value than the average carbon stock of coffee-based agroforestry in Indonesia, but the diversity index value is lower. Improving biodiversity is necessary to optimize growing space in farmer land through species enrichment under existing land and plant conditions.

Abstract. Satriawan H, Nazirah L, Fitri R, Ernawita. 2022. Evaluation of growth and yield of upland rice varieties under various shading levels and organic fertilizer concentrations. Biodiversitas 23: 2655-2662. The present study aimed to reveal the effect of shading treatments and organic fertilizer dosages on the growth and yield of several upland rice varieties. A split-split plot experimental design with 3 factors was used in this study, consisting of shading levels as the main plot (0%, 30%, 60%), organic fertilizer as a sub-plot (0 g/plant, 25 g/plant, 50 g/plant, and 75 g/plant) and upland rice varieties as sub-sub plot (Ciherang, Situ Bagendit, Kabir 07 and Malaysian upland). Parameters observed were plant height and tiller numbers (expressed as area under the curve), panicle number, dry hay weight, grain weight, flowering time, and chlorophyll number. Results showed that shading treatments significantly affected panicle number, grain weight, and dry hay weight (0% and 30% shade showed the highest result with no significant differences; while 60% shades showed the lowest results); varieties are an important determinant in tiller numbers (Malaysian upland, Ciherang, Situ Bagendit and Kabir 07 with 798.33 ±7.76 and 792.71 ± 9.4, 764.38 ±8.75 and 738.33 ± 14.84, consecutively) and panicle numbers (Ciherang, Situ Bagendit, Malaysian upland and Kabir 07 with 46.51 ± 5.97, 45.26 ±5.68, 44.31 ± 5.09, and 41.08 ± 5.92, consecutively); while organic fertilizer dosages significantly affected tiller numbers in which 26 t ha-1 and 8 t.ha-1 were the highest and the lowest tiller number observed, respectively. Shade and variety interaction significantly affected plant height and flowering time, while interactions of varieties and organic fertilizer dosages are significant on tiller number, panicle number, grain weight, and dry hay weight. The highest total chlorophyll number was shown by Situ Bagendit variety (144.44 granules mm-2) at 60% shading level, while Kabir 07 (98.8 granules mm-2) at 30% shading level showed the lowest total chlorophyll number. It can be concluded that organic fertilization significantly affected the growth and production of upland rice varieties compared to shading treatments. Thus, upland rice cultivation under shading conditions is the potential to be developed, particularly with appropriate rice varieties and optimum organic fertilization techniques.

Stingless bees (Hymenoptera: Meliponini) are eusocial insects with high economic value in terms of their honey and propolis yield. The bees are widely distributed in tropical regions, including Indonesia. This study aimed to estimate the diversity, abundance, and distribution pattern of stingless bees in the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. The following seven species of stingless bees have been identified in previous research: Tetragonula laeviceps, T. iridipennis, T. biroi, T. sapiens, T. sarawakensis, Heterotrigona itama, and Lepidotrigona terminata. The current work determined the scores of diversity (H’: 0.98), abundance (N: 14.0 ind/m2), and distribution pattern (id: 0.51) of stingless bees in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The results were analyzed and then subjected to principal component analysis to determine the dominant characteristics on the basis of the environmental parameters that influence the presence of stingless bees in three habitat types in the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. Results revealed that temperature is one such environmental parameter affecting the presence of stingless bees in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Biodiversity of ethnomedicinal plants from the B’laan Tribe in Mount Matutum Protected Landscape, Southern Mindanao, Philippines. Biodiversitas 23: 554-563. Mount Matutum Protected Landscape (MMPL) is one of the key biodiversity areas in Mindanao Island, Philippines, and is part of the ancestral domains of 18 indigenous peoples. The present study aims to establish a comprehensive inventory of the medicinal flora at MMPL according to the traditional healing practices of the B'laan, a tribal community whose cultural heritage is anchored to their interactions with nature and with a rich and understudied ethnomedicinal system. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews of the tribal healers from five tribal communities revealed 101 medicinal plants belonging to 33 families were identified. The plant species have therapeutic uses for 19 disease categories. Roots and leaves are the most utilized parts which are made into a decoction, the most common preparation for oral intake. Tawal-ulad (Lunasia amara Blanco), which is used as a treatment for snake bites, dengue, dysmenorrhea, constipation, rabies, and hypertension has the highest use value (UV). Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) analysis revealed that cholera, scabies, viral infections, warts, beriberi, diabetes, gastric ulcer are the most common diseases treated with medicinal plants by the B'laan tribal healers. The biodiversity of medicinal plants, although some remain unidentified at the species level, reflects the centuries-old ethnomedicinal knowledge of the B'laan Tribe. Our study is the first comprehensive documentation of the ethnomedicinal knowledge of the B'laan Tribe residing at MMPL.

Growth and morpho-physiology of Tectona philippinensis under different water stress and soil conditions. Biodiversitas 23: 507-513. Plants exhibit adaptive mechanisms to respond to fluctuating amounts of soil moisture and poor soil properties; however, these mechanisms remain largely unknown in many forest tree species growing in dry and limestone areas in the Philippines, such as the endemic and endangered Tectona philippinensis Benth & Hook.f. This study investigated the growth and morpho-physiological responses of T. philippinensis wildlings to water stress and soil types. One-year-old wildlings were subjected to two watering treatments, i.e., well-watered and water-stressed, and three different soil types, i.e., Lobo, Batangas, Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve, and UP-Laguna-Quezon Land Grant. The root collar diameter, height, biomass allocations, and morpho-physiological traits (photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, relative water content, specific leaf area, and stem green density) were measured. Overall, the growth performance of the wildlings was improved significantly when grown in soil from the natural habitat under WW conditions. Therefore, the recommended conservation approach potentially suitable for T. philippinensis is in-situ, particularly in riparian areas, when artificial irrigation is not possible and practical. The present study's findings provide us with a better understanding of the growth and ecophysiology of T. philippinensis under water-deficient conditions for its effective in-situ conservation.

Abstract. Belguidoum A, Haichour R, Lograda T, Ramdani M. 2021. Biomonitoring of air pollution by lichen diversity in the urban area of Setif, Algeria. Biodiversitas 23: 970-981. The use of living organisms in air quality monitoring has received increasing attention in recent years. Lichens, pioneer and colonizing organisms, are directly sensitive to environmental changes. This results in a loss of vitality or complete destruction of the thallus. The objective of this study is to assess and map the air quality of the Setif region, Algeria by lichens, using bio-indication indices. For air quality assessment, lichen species frequency, the Shannon-Wiener index, Atmospheric Purity Index (IAP), and Air Quality Index (IAQ) were used. Sixty stations were sampled across the region, representing the various level of landscape factors and anthropogenic activities. The study recorded 54 lichen species in urban areas of Setif belonged to 29 genera and 19 families, of which crustose and foliose, were the most common in the region. The pollution indicators (IAP, IAQ) showed an important correlation between them and a difference between rural and urban ecosystems. Anthropized urban areas showed very high air pollution. This is probably due to industrial and agricultural activities, but especially to gas emissions from vehicles. The majority of studied stations belonged to an area with very high atmospheric pollution. In addition, the presence of the species Xanthoria parietina in all the stations studied facilitates to use of it as a reliable biomonitor of plant tolerance to pollutants in urban ecosystems.

Abstract. Khan MN, Ali S, Razak SA, Zaman A, Iqbal M, Shah SN. 2021. Assessment of floristic diversity in the mountain ecosystem of Marghazar Valley, Hindukush Range, Swat, Pakistan. Biodiversitas 23: 1000-1013. Marghazar Valley, a part of the Hindukush Range, is an area with a rich diversity of plant resources. Geo-climatically and ecologically, this valley is characterized by a moist temperate and subtropical zone with a Sino-Japanese type of vegetation. A comprehensive survey was carried out from April 2019-June 2020 to explore the biodiversity and ecological aspects of plants in Marghazar Valley, Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The study recorded a total number of 307 taxa (161 herbs, 45 shrubs, 46 trees, 37 grasses, 10 climbers, 2 shruby herbs, 1 subshrub, 1 tree-like herb, 1 hollow tufted tree, 1 climbing shrub, 1 parasitic herb and 1 woody climber) belong to 94 families and 236 genera that consisted of Pteridophytes (14 species, 9 genera, 7 families), Gymnosperms (5 species, 4 genera, 2 families) and Angiosperms (288 species, 223 genera and 85 families). Families with the highest number of species were Poaceae (38 species) and Asteraceae (29 species), followed by Rosaceae (22 species), Brassicaceae (13 species) and Lamiaceae (11 species), while the rest of the families had less than 11 species. Dicots were the group with the largest number of genera (75.24 %), followed by Monocots (18.56 %), Pteridophytes (4.54 %) and Gymnosperms (1.62 %). Cousinia bupthalmoides was recorded from the area for the first time and are a novel addition to the flora of Swat. Phenology of vegetation revealed that 173 taxa (56.35%) recorded as perennial followed by 134 taxa as annual plants (43.50%). Bio-spectrum classes were represented by 126 species as therophytes (40.90%) and 122 species as microphylls (39.61%) in life form and leaf size respectively, while 2 species i.e Cuscuta reflexa and Equisetum arvense are aphyllus which possesses no leaves.

Abstract. Benserradj O, Benslama O, Ghorri S. 2021. Insights into the genome sequence of the glyphosate-degrading bacterium Enterobacter sp. Bisph1. Biodiversitas 23: 817-882. Glyphosate is by far the most extensively utilized herbicide in the world, and because of its negative effects on the environment and animal health, finding microorganisms with the ability to degrade this herbicide is one of the scientists’ top priorities. Enterobacter sp. Bisph1 was isolated during prospecting glyphosate-degrading bacteria from a sandy soil of the region of Biskra in Algeria. To better understand the involvement of this strain in the degradation of glyphosate, a sequencing of the 4.5 MB genome of Enterobacter sp. Bisph1, as well as an annotation, and analysis of its genome sequence were performed in this study. Genomic DNA was sequenced on a MiSeq sequencer llumina using paired-end sequencing with the Nextera XT protocol. The genome of strain Enterobacter sp. Bisph1 comprises one chromosome of 4,578,487 bp with a GC content of 53.6%. Its 4,330 genes (78.13%) were assigned a putative function. The genome contains two intact phages and no CRISPR was found. The genome inspection also revealed the presence of the carbon-to-phosphorus (C-P) bond lyase coding genes clusters that consists of eight genes phnFHIJKLMP. The draft genome of the Enterobacter sp. Bisph1 provides insight into the role of this strain as an important agent of bioremediation of glyphosate by examining the genes known to encode the biodegradation enzymes of this herbicide. The sequencing of the genome of Bisph1 allows a better understanding of the taxonomy of this strain within the Enterobacteriaceae family.

Genetically continuous populations of Striped Snakehead (Channa striata) in the Cingcingguling River fragmented by Sempor Reservoir, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 222-230. Cingcingguling River, located in Kebumen District, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The Sempor Reservoir fragments it. The previous study proved the negative impact of the reservoir on positive rheotaxis fish, mainly in genetic constituents between the reservoir and river populations. However, research has not been conducted on the negative rheotaxis fish, such as Channa striata. Assessing population genetic and taxonomic validity study of Striped Snakehead in the Cingcingguling River is an essential effort. Both studies could be done using the cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene. Therefore, this research aims to determine taxonomic status and evaluate the population genetic of C. striata in the Cingcingguling River. The samples were collected at eight sites, inside and outside the reservoir. The used marker was sequenced from 53 individuals, and all specimens showed high identity (98.67% to 100%) and low genetic distances (0.00 to 0.01) to C. striata (KU692421, KU852443, and MG438366). Those values proved that all samples were genetically identified as Channa striata. The vertical genetic distribution analysis demonstrated that C. striata populations are genetically not different along the river. Unlike rheotaxis positive fish phenomena, the reservoir's existence does not cause genetic fragmentation and leads to continuous striped snakehead populations.
