Survival and growth rates of mangroves planted in vertical and horizontal aquaponic systems in North Jakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 687-694. Mangrove rehabilitation is aimed to reverse mangrove deforestation and degradation. Various efforts have been conducted to rehabilitate the degraded mangroves, yet problems arise when planting mangroves in the high and permanently water-logged areas in coastline. The aquaponic system is a mangrove planting method introduced to reduce the impact of permanent and high water inundation. This research aims to analyze the survival rate of mangroves planted using vertical and horizontal aquaponic systems in Jakarta's north coast and investigate the correlation between physico-chemical environmental parameters and the survival and growth rates of the planted mangroves. The results showed that the survival rate of mangroves planted in the vertical aquaponic system reached 55.4-96.9%. On the other hand, the highest survival rate in the horizontal aquaponic system was obtained in mangrove planting at 80-100 cm from the bottom with survived plants between 70-90%. The height growth rate of mangroves planted in the aquaponic system was between 0.95-2.33 cm/month. The correlation analysis showed that soil salinity, soil pH and water salinity had a high correlation to support living trees of mangrove seedlings. Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, and Rhizophora stylosa had highest survival and adaptation in this planting system.

Biodiversitas 25: 30-38. Pumpkin is a tropical plant that benefits from its lipid, protein, carbohydrate, and mineral contents. The morphological characters of pumpkins can be influenced by their genetics and environment. This research aimed to examine the relationship among 9 accessions of Cucurbita moschata Duchesne from 9 locations in Bima district, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, Indonesia. The morphological characters of stems, leaves, and flowers were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively and an ANOVA was used to look at the difference of leaf and flower characters. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) with peroxidase and esterase was used to detect isozyme banding patterns. Morphological characters and isozyme data were analyzed using a UPGMA method with NTSYS version 2.0 software to construct a dendrogram. The results show evidence of the varied morphological appearance of C. moschata from the different locations. A total of 12 esterase bands and 10 peroxidase bands were detected from Wera2. An undetected band with Rf value of 0.567 was recorded, while a unique band with Rf value of 0.133 (peroxidase) was not detected. Undetected bands with Rf values of 0.645 and 0.726 of esterase were also recorded.  A dendrogram showed three clusters of 9 accessions studied, in which Wera2 and Wera3 each stood alone, and a third large group was formed from the 7 remaining accessions. These results confirm the uniqueness of the Wera2 and Wera3 accessions. These results would be good information in determining a management strategy for improving the quality of pumpkins in the future.

Abstract. Suranto, Hidayati NR, Furqan M, Mahadjoeno E, Sajidan. 2023. Flavonoid compound of Cucurbita moschata at three different altitudes. Biodiversitas 24: 1853-1860. The aims of this research were to examine the presence of flavonoids, both the total and the content of quercetin and kaempferol, in Cucurbita moschata (Duchesne) Duchesne ex Poir. leaf growing at different altitudes. First, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was used to detect the presence of flavonoid substances, followed by the colorimetric AlCl3 method to look at the Total Flavonoid Content (TFC). Finally, one-way ANOVA was employed to analyze quantitatively. Accordingly, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method was used to test whether any member of flavonoid substances was found. The results showed that flavonoid substances of C. moschata leaf samples were detected, and the Rf value of every single altitude was not significantly different. However, the highest total flavonoid content was recorded from the middle altitude (1.369 mg QE/g); the lowest was found in the highest (0.244 QE/g). Furthermore, HPLC tests showed that retention times of quercetin at every single altitude from the lowest to the highest one were not much different. Meanwhile, kaempferol's retention time was recorded at 13.001 minutes for the lowest altitude and 12.955 and 12.965 minutes for the middle and highest altitudes, respectively. These preliminary results, especially the total flavonoid content in different altitudes, could detect various flavonoid members, such as quercetin and kaempferol, for the next project.

Biodiversitas 23: 1167-1171. One of the characteristics of cancer cells is uncontrolled proliferation. This can be caused by aberrant in the proteins that play a role in the process of apoptosis and cell cycle. Lamesticumin A and 2-ethyl,3-(1’-hydroxy-2’-menthene) propenal have been isolated from ethyl acetate extract of L. domesticum fruit peel had cytotoxicity against T-47D cells. However, the study on how these terpenoids induce cell death is still unknown. Flow cytometry analysis was carried out to evaluate the effect of the compounds in cell cycle modulation and apoptotic induction. The terpenoid compounds induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in S phase in a dose dependent manner. Compound 1 synergized the effect of doxorubicin in inducing cell death through mechanism involving the cell cycle. Compound 1 revealed better activity in killing T-47D cells rather than compound 2. Further studies are needed to explore the potential of these compounds in promoting cell death of breast cancer.

Biodiversitas 23: 655-662. Mangrove-based silvofishery ponds are promoted as a win-win solution for biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation as well as income generation for coastal communities. This study aimed to analyze the species diversity and carbon stock of mangrove vegetation in silvofishery ponds in Tanjung Rejo Village, Percut Seituan Sub-district, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data of the mangrove species were obtained using vegetation analysis, and the potential carbon stock was estimated based on allometric equations of both above- and below-ground tree biomass. For this purpose, plot samples from 22 silvofishery ponds were taken by establishing 5 aligned circular plots, each with a radius of 5.64 m, perpendicular to the coastline and with a distance of 15 meters between their perimeters. The results show that the mangrove species with the highest Importance Value Index (IVI) was Rhizophora apiculata (122.05%), followed by Excoecaria agallocha (42.29%) and Avicennia marina (36.84%), and the lowest IVI was Sonneratia caseolaris (1.48%). Higher IVI values indicate a larger carbon deposit from mangrove vegetation in silvofishery ponds. Our results indicate that mangrove area coverage of 44-80% per hectare in silvofishery ponds can deposit 40-50 tonnes of carbon per hectare and have greater potential carbon stock compared to coverage below 40%. The mangrove management activities with the sylvofishery scheme have a good impact on the community's economy and also maintain the existence of mangroves as carbon storage.

Abstract. Sembiring M, Sabrina T. 2021. Diversity of phosphate solubilizing bacteria and fungi from andisol soil affected by the eruption of Mount Sinabung, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 713-719. Phosphate solubilizing microbes are present in all locations with different population levels. The eruption of Mount Sinabung in 2013 resulted in changes in soil pH and the soil’s microbial population, such as phosphate solubilizing microbes. This research aimed to obtain environmentally-specific phosphate solubilizing microbes derived from andisol soil impacted by the eruption of Mount Sinabung, which excelled in increasing the availability of phosphate. Sampling was conducted in Desa Kutarayat, Naman Teran Sub-district, Karo District, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Isolation of phosphate solubilizing microbes was carried out on pikovskaya media, and test of phosphate solubilizing microbes potential was conducted on solid and liquid pikovskaya media. Organic acid content was determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and microbial identification was performed using PCR-sequencing. The result showed that 4 isolates of each phosphate-soluble fungi and bacteria were isolated from andisol soil affected by the eruption of Sinabung mountain. It was also observed that phosphate solubilizing microbes’ ability to produce organic acids varied. The obtained fungi could dissolve P in some phosphate source either on solid media or liquid medium. Talaromyces pinophilus (J2) can increase the highest availability of P in andisol soil.

Abstract. Manan A, Salasiyah CI, Rahmawati S, Saprijal, Khairisman, Chairunnisak. 2022. Special meal of the Acehnese, Indonesia during Ramadhan. Biodiversitas 23: 1187-1195. Ie Bu Peudah is a special meal of Acehnese, Indonesia society in every month of Ramadhan consisting of 44 kinds of mixed substances. All mixed ingredients are pounded or mashed using a special mortal done together and collectively. This study aimed to explore more deeply the origin of the making Ie Bu Peudah, its usefulness, social functions, and knowledge transfer amongst community. This descriptive analysis study employed observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation to collect the data. The obtained data were analyzed by reducing, displaying, and concluding stages. The findings showed that the history of Ie Bu Peudah was carried by Indian traders that visited Aceh then the meal was recreated and modified by the local people in the sultanate of Aceh during 15 AD and was passed down over generations until today. Its efficacy was for body immunity, including the danger of coronavirus and healing many diseases like a tumor as it contains antioxidants, antibiotics, antiseptic, etc. Besides protecting from many diseases, Ie Bu Peudah also has the social functions which were to strengthen the friendship (silaturrahmi) among traditional figures and local people, strengthening the unity, glorifying the month full of blessing, preserving the harmony between the leaders of the village and people and upholding the values of togetherness during the month of Ramadhan.

Abstract. Samudra SR, Fitriadi R, Baedowi M, Sari LK. 2022. Pollution level of Banjaran River, Banyumas District, Indonesia: A study based on the Saprobic Index of periphytic microalgae. Biodiversitas 23: 1527-1534. The saprobic index of periphytic microalgae can be used to determine the level of water pollution based on the number and composition of species. Banjaran River is one of the rivers in the Banyumas District, Central Java, Indonesia, which is widely used by the local people for daily activities. The increase of domestic and agricultural activities in the river triggers an increase in the pollutants input into the river. This study aims to determine the status of the waters in the midstream of Banjaran River by using the periphytic microalgae saprobic index as a bioindicator of water quality. Purposive sampling method was used in this study by establishing four stations and five replications at each station. The result showed that the abundance of periphytic microalgae ranged from 7,547-8,733 cells/cm2; the diversity index ranged from 1.64-2.07 (moderately polluted waters); the dominance index ranged from 0.21-0.26 (no particular species of periphytic microalgae dominating the four stations); and saprobic index value of Banjaran River ranged from 1.00 to 1.03 which indicates that Banjaran River belongs to ?-meso/oligo saprobic water. In other words, it was water with a light pollution level. An action to reduce organic pollution is necessary, one of which is by reducing the people's activities such as washing and disposing of household waste into the river so that the condition of Banjaran River can be maintained properly and reduce pollution in its subsequent river flows.

Type and morphological character of local clove (Syzygium aromaticum) from Maluku, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 1301-1309. Maluku Islands are known as the origin for the distribution of cloves (Syzygium aromaticum L.) in the world, where the diversity of clove germplasm is high. So far, information on the diversity of local clove morphology in Maluku is still very limited. The study was aimed to characterize the morphological diversity of local clove accessions in Maluku. The study was conducted in three distribution areas in Maluku, namely Ambon Island, Seram Island, and Haruku Island. Characterization was carried out on 130 local clove accessions of Maluku based on 32 morphological characters. The exploration identified nine types of cloves, namely Tuni, Forest Clove, Raja, Boiselang, Zanzibar, Bogor, Jinten, Tae, Damar, and three variants of Forest Clove, two variants of Raja, and two variants Zanzibar. Forest cloves, Raja, Boiselang Jinten, Tae, Damar are classified as wild-type cloves, while Tuni, Zanzibar and Bogor cloves are classified as cultivated cloves. The Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) obtained 2 large groups of local cloves with 57% agro-morphological differences. The first group is Forest Clove and Boiselang, while the second group is other local clove accessions (Tuni, Jinten, Red Zanzibar, White Zanzibar, Bogor, Damar, Tae, and Raja). The Principle Component Analysis (PCA) shows a total diversity of 66.7% with 4 characters based on grouping. These cloves are also categorized into wild type, cultivated, aromatic, and non-aromatic types.

Biodiversitas 23: 1482-1489. Stomata, a gas regulatory system of leaves, provide a great chance to investigate the interaction between plants and their environment. Stomata consist of surrounded by two guard cells. Stomata are found in all parts of the plant that are exposed to the air, especially the leaves. In identifying a plant species, it is necessary to have epidermal characteristics such as stomata to complete the taxonomic data. Several studies have been conducted on the type of stomata on the leaves of some dicotyledonous and monocot plants, but not many have reported similar studies on green space. Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) campus also plays an important function as green space (GS) in Medan City due to its richness in tree collection number and species. In line with the effort in o maximizing the role of trees as the core element of green space, exploring the characteristics of stomata is important to conduct. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the leaf stomata characteristics of several tree species in the green open space of the USU campus. A total of 83 tree species were taken for their leaves to investigate the stomata characters. Three healthy mature leaves on the lower part of newly grown branches were collected from each plant. The replica and the nail polish method were employed for stomata slice making. The stomata type, length, wide, density and distribution were observed. The result showed that 83 tree species in the USU campus have varied stomata types, with the percentage were highest characteristic found in paracytic (91.46%), followed by anomocytic (6.02%), anisocytic (1.20%), and diacytic (1.20%). The longest stomata were observed in Antidesma bunius (32.04 ????????). The widest stomata were noticed in Garcinia mangostana (37.62 ????????). Meanwhile, the shortest and narrowest stomata were found in Shorea laevis, which were 5.43 ???????? and 3.72 ????????, respectively. The species with the highest stomatal density was Schleichera oleosa (4294 mm-2). According to the study, the tree species at USU generally have high stomata density, length, and width, making them more suitable for green space. Species with a high number and density of stomata and a large size are much more likely to adsorb pollutants such as carbon monoxide.
