Indiscriminate use of pesticides has raised concerns over environmental and human health issues. A more environmentally-friendly biological approach to control insect pests is gaining importance. For decades, bioinsecticides based on viruses have been used to protect crops and forests. The viruses belonging to the Baculoviridae family are known to infect insect pests, and hence can be used as biopesticides. Baculoviruses are mostly specific to the host and are not lethal to the non-target organism. However, their usage is limited for field application due to a slow kill speed and sensitivity towards UV irradiation. This review paper discusses the life cycle of baculoviruses, their mode of infection and transmission as well as the influence of UV radiation on the effectiveness of baculoviral insecticides for field application.

Object based classification of benthic habitat using Sentinel 2 imagery by applying with support vector machine and random forest algorithms in shallow waters of Kepulauan Seribu. Biodiversitas 23: 514-520. Benthic habitats have very high complexity and are home to many types of aquatic organisms. Benthic habitats have various functions, including habitat for flora and fauna, sediment traps, nursery areas, and foraging areas for aquatic fauna that are susceptible to damage due to human activities or natural factors. Therefore, more accurate spatial information is needed. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of object-based classification techniques for mapping shallow waters benthic habitats using Sentinel 2A imagery. The two classification algorithms used are support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF). The input image layer (IIL) used for classification is the natural color band (Band 432). The results showed that the SVM and RF classification algorithms could classify eight classes of benthic habitats. The overall accuracy (OA) of the SVM algorithm is 65%, while the RF accuracy is 67%, with kappa values of 0.59 and 0.60, respectively. The significant test applied to Sentinel 2 images with SVM and RF algorithms for benthic habitats has a Z test value of-0.41. These results indicate that the classification results between the SVM and RF algorithms are not significantly different.

Abstract. Bao TQ, Ha NT, Nguyet BTM, Hoan VM, Viet LH, Hung DV. 2021. Aboveground biomass and carbon stock of Rhizophora apiculata forest in Ca Mau, Vietnam. Biodiversitas 23: 403-414. Despite the small proportion of mangrove forests globally, they contribute significantly in carbon storage. Yet, biomass and carbon stock in mangrove forests might vary depending on various factors including the dominant species that occurred. This study was conducted to determine the biomass and carbon stock of a mangrove forest dominated by Rhizophora apiculata Blume in Ca Mau, Vietnam. Data were collected from 56 representative sample plots (50m x 50m), and 46 sample trees with different age classes and diameter sizes were cut down to measure the fresh biomass. The dry biomass and carbon content were analyzed in the laboratory. The average aboveground biomass and carbon stock of the individual tree and the R. apiculata forest at different diameter sizes had a significant difference and were mostly found in the stem (74.5%-79.5%). The conversion factor from fresh biomass to dry biomass was 0.56; the conversion factor from dry biomass to carbon was 0.46. The total biomass of the individual trees had a close relationship with two variables diameter at breast height (DBH) and height (Hvn) in the form of the logarithmic function: ln(Wtk) = -1,86412 - 1,95419*ln(Hvn) + 2,26798*ln(DBH*Hvn). The total biomass and carbon stock of the entire forest stand increased in accordance with the diameter size and age classes. The R. apiculata stand had a density of 1,040-15,800 trees/ha and a timber volume of 27.2 to 365.6 m3/ha. The average biomass of the R. apiculata stand was 191.1 tons/ha with a range from 49.6 to 357.4 tons/ha. The carbon stock in forest biomass ranged from 23.8 to 188.7 tons C/ha, with an average of 117.4 tons C/ha. The forest’s CO2 absorption ranged from 60.0 to 691.7 tons CO2/ha, with an average of 415.9 tons/ha. The carbon stocks of trees of age class I to age class VI were 41.6 tons C/ha, 79.4 tons C/ha, 101.4 tons C/ha, 132.9 tons C/ha, 154.0 tons C/ha, and 167.4 tons C/ha, respectively.

Genetic diversity analysis among 123 accessions of castor (Ricinus communisL.) using SSR marker and its association to agronomic traits. Biodiversitas 23: 1211-1221. Castor (Ricinus communis L.) breeding program targets to create dwarf-type plants suitable for mechanical harvesting. Characterization of plantsusing morphological and molecular markers can enhance the successful breeding program. This studyaimed to investigate the diversity of castor accessionsusing Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers and find the SSR markers that are significantly associated with the agronomic traits. The castor germplasm collection consisting of 123 accessions from the islands throughout Indonesia, breeding lines, and introducedaccessions displayed a moderate genetic diversity. The germplasm collection showed high variation in plant height, node length average, number of nodes, 100 seed weight, and oil content. The association analysis using GLM (General Linear Model) and MLM (Mixed Linear Model) could detect six associations between SSR marker alleles and agronomic traits. Among the marker alleles, two marker alleles had an overlap association. RcSSR-12_175 had an association with plant height and flowering day, RcSSR-23_113 had an association with node length average and branch number, and RcSSR-4_125 had an association with seed weight/raceme. This finding could provide information on Indonesia’s castor accession status. The linked-trait SSR markers are useful in marker-assisted selection for breeding high yield dwarf type-castor.

Population characteristics and habitat suitability of Khao Yai National Park, Thailand for Asian elephant and five ungulate species. Biodiversitas 23: 231-243. This study of population characteristics and habitat suitability of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) and five ungulate species was conducted between October 2017 and July 2020 in Khao Yai National Park (KYNP) using camera traps. One hundred and twenty-two camera trap locations were set up for a total of 4,139 trap nights and 5,461 independent encounters were identified. The target species of Asian elephant, gaur, sambar deer, wild boar, northern red muntjac and lesser oriental chevrotain were recorded. The results show the occupancy of Asian elephant was 1.21 individuals/km2 within the study area. The probability occupancy of the Asian elephant was 70% (SE=0.06). In comparison, gaur had a probability occupancy of 57% (SE=0.07), whereas sambar deer was 79% (SE=0.04), followed by wild boar 77% (SE=0.05), northern red muntjac 77% (SE=0.05) and lesser oriental chevrotain occupancy 63% (SE=0.07). The age structure of Asian elephant between calf, juvenile, sub-adult and adult was 1: 2.1: 1.2: 3.16, and the ratio between adult males and females was 1: 1.72. The results show that roads and salt lick sites were the essential factors affecting the chance of Asian elephants and ungulate species in the area. The habitat suitability for Asian elephant was 331 km2, while those for gaur, sambar deer, wild boar, northern red muntjac and lesser oriental chevrotain were 287.73 km2, 249.97 km2, 540.40 km2, 451.34 km2 and 434.30 km2, respectively. Recommendations for further management involve concentration on the suitable area resulting from this study. Concerning the suitability habitat, it was found that the park boundary was most suited. Therefore, habitat improvements for all large herbivorous mammal species should improve the areas within the national park and especially address the central area, with an emphasis on creating salt lick sites, in addition to grassland and water sources that must be quality and sufficient, the most important habitat factor for these species.

Biodiversitas 23: 1154-1158. Exopolysaccharide (EPS) is a carbohydrate polymer secreted by several bacteria in their growth period, including Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB). Dextran is a type of EPS produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides and is used widely in the food and pharmaceutical fields. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potency of two strains of L. mesenteroides isolated from Borassus flabellifer L. (lontar) sap, namely L. mesenteroides N5 and N7 for dextran production using the MRS broth medium supplemented with sucrose at varying concentrations of 5, 10, and 15% (w/v). The results showed that L. mesenteroides N5 produced dextran of 14.53 g/L in medium with 15% sucrose, while L. mesenteroides N7 yielded 13.16 g/L at 10% sucrose. The characteristics of selected dextran showed that it contains 89.93% total carbohydrate, 2.33% protein and has a surface structure with tight pore for dextran N5 while the dextran N7 contains 87.84% total carbohydrates, 2.22% protein and has looser porous surface structure.

Biodiversitas 23: 5654-5661. Naphthalene is one of the pollutants that cause carcinogens. The biodegradation of carcinogenic naphthalene toxic compounds needs to be done to control pollution. Pseudomonas is one of several bacterial species that can degrading naphthalene. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of Pseudomonas sp. isolated from the land area of ??the Joint Operating Body (JOB) of PT. Siak Bumi Pusako-Pertamina Hulu in degrading naphthalene with glucose as a co-substrate. The potency of three isolates of Pseudomonas sp. LBKURCC148, LBKURCC149, and LBKURCC150 was tested in Minimal Media (MM) containing 0.2 mM naphthalene and incubated for seven days. The Optical Density (OD), pH, decreased concentration of naphthalene and degradation ability parameters were analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that Pseudomonas sp. LBKURCC149 was able to degrade naphthalene by 13.95%. Naphthalene analysis using HPLC resulted in a decrease in the peak area of ??the sample as compared to the control. Based on these findings Pseudomonas sp. LBKURCC149 could be recommended to use to degrade naphthalene pollution.

Abstract. Mardaleni, Jumin HB, Nandariyah, Yunus A. 2022. Fruit morphological diversity and quality of pulasan (Nephelium ramboutan-ake) from six populations in Riau, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2526-2533. Pulasan (Nephelium ramboutan-ake), which belongs to the Sapindaceae family, has economic value, but information on the morphological diversity and quality of its fruit is unknown. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the morphology and quality of pulasan fruits from six populations in Riau Province, Indonesia and observe the kinship among populations. A total of 18 qualitative and 13 quantitative characteristics were evaluated on 67 pulasan cultivars. The difference among morphological characteristics was to analysed using ANOVA and Duncan multiple range tests, while the kinship analysis used UPGMA. Results of the quantitative and qualitative characterization of pulasan fruits showed high diversity among populations. The fruit is oblong, and it has a uniform skin color, sweet taste, aril cream-white color, and aril that can be easily peeled from the seeds. These characteristics indicate good fruit quality. Dendrogram analysis divided the population into two large groups at 73% similarity. The first group consisted of the population of Kampar Kiri, Gunung Sahilan, and Kuok, whereas the second group consisted of the population of Bengkalis, Siak, and Kuansing. The results of this study provide baseline information to obtain potentially superior characteristics for breeding and conservation of genetic resources, which can be used as a basis for the conservation of the germplasm of pulasan.

Abstract. Sawaki S, Taran D, Taran F, Bomoi R, Rumateray M. 2022. Hunting of wild animals by Saubeba Community in Manokwari, West Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2411-2416. Hunting is a way to harvest wild animals from nature and it is still a common practice by local communities in Papua, Indonesia. This study aims to investigate traditional ecological knowledge of hunting wild animals by Saubeba community in Manokwari, West Papua, Indonesia. The data was collected through open interviews to 32 respondents determined using the snowball sampling technique. The result showed that hunting is performed in a group of 4-8 members when the dark moon happens. A group of hunters consists of adult men and teenage boys aged above 15 years old. They hunt 3-4 times per month with a duration of 2-3 days in the forest. Modern hunting is carried out using weapons, while traditional hunting is performed with the help of dogs, used arrows, spears and snares. Women are not allowed to hunt and they are prohibited to touch all hunting equipment and the catches. Among the wild animals hunted, nine out of sixteen species are categorized as protected animals and some of them have high conservation concerns in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and Convention on International Trades on Endangered Species (CITES) list. No conservation efforts are planned and applied by the hunters and the community. However, there is a shift in the diet, in which eleven respondents stop hunting and start to raise livestock for consumption purposes. This suggests that assistance in livestock rearing programs by government is required to reduce the hunting pressure on the remaining wild animals.

Abstract. Darmadi AAK, Suriani NL, Ginantra IK, Sudirga SK. 2022. Short Communication: Effectiveness of cinnamon leaf extract to control anthracnose disease on large chilies in Bali, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2859-2864. The use of synthetic fungicides for plants is very dangerous because it has a negative impact on the environment. In the context of implementing eco-friendly, sustainable agriculture, efforts need to be made to reduce the negative impact caused by the use of synthetic fungicides. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of a crude extract of cinnamon leaves, observe the inhibition effect on fungi by scanning electron microscope, and test the formulation of cinnamon leaf extract against anthracnose disease on large chilies in the field. Cinnamon leaf crude extract showed inhibition zone of 35 mm diameter against Colletotrichum acutatum. The extract showed strong inhibition so further used as biofungicide in field experiments. Based on scanning electron microscopy, cinnamon leaf extract can damage to the fungal cell wall. Cinnamon leaf extract formula was found effective in reducing disease percentage and intensity of anthracnose disease in experimental fields. In the treatment, a concentration of 0.5% to 1.5% can inhibit the percentage of disease ranging from 29.4% to 100%. Concentrations of 0.5% to 1.5% can prevent disease severity from 35.8% to 100%.
