Ecosystem approach for blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) sustainability in Bekasi District, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 4117-4126. There is concern that the sustainability of blue swimming crab (BSC) (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus 1758) resources is threatened by ever-increasing consumption. This has led to increased BSC fishing pressure, which can result in over exploitation. The study aims to analyze BSC sustainability based on the indicators of the ecosystem approach for fisheries management (EAFM) and to determine the follow-up in the form of management tactical steps. The study site was the waters of Segara Jaya Village, Taruma Jaya Sub-district, Bekasi District, West Java, Indonesia. The sampling location was the mudflats around the mangrove ecosystem. Data on BSC were collected from fishermen’s catches; the crabs’ carapace width (CW) and weight were measured, and their sex was identified. The fishermen data were collected from the entire population of Segara Jaya fishermen (40 people). We analyzed BSC sustainability using the CW-based stock assessment. The life-history parameters consisted of growth parameters, mortality, and exploitation rate estimated using the “TropFishR” package in RStudio; the rest used descriptive analysis. The results indicated that the BSC caught had an average CW of 7.25 cm (not compliant with the government policy) and an average weight of 29.24 g. There was overexploitation, with the exploitation rate value being 0.94 for males and 0.85 for females. The results of the water quality measurements were in accordance with seawater quality standards for marine biota. To properly educate fishermen, several counseling and motivational approaches are needed to build the fishermen’s awareness. Regarding fishing techniques, educating fishermen to catch BSC larger than the minimum size set by the government (CW of >10 cm) is needed. Motivation-building to fishermen so that they are invested in conserving BSC resources is also needed in the socio-economy domain.

Biodiversitas 25: 2821-2827. Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiments are long-term monitoring projects to comprehend the response of forest ecosystems to future atmospheres with CO2 enriched. Therefore, the research aims to determine the forest biomass and species diversity in the FACE system of Tekam Forest Reserve (TFR), Pahang, Malaysia. The sampling plots of 25 m × 20 m were established in TekamFACE as experimental plot and control plot in TFR. Allometric equation, Shannon-Wiener, and Evenness indices were used to estimate the standing biomass, carbon stock and species diversity, respectively. Tekam FACE system recorded total forest biomass of 54.38 ton/ha, contributed by 42.82 tons/ha of Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) and 11.56 tons/ha of Below-Ground Biomass (BGB). High carbon stock was also estimated at both forest plots with 27.19 tons/ha in TekamFACE and 17.35 tons/ha in control plot. These values indicated that the forest has high biomass, which can contribute to carbon sequestration that help mitigate the impacts of climate change. Further, this forest recorded high Species Diversity (H’) and Species Evenness (E) at TekamFACE (H’ = 4.04; E = 0.93) and control plot (H’ = 3.53; E = 0.83). Overall, this research emphasized that forests with rich biodiversity have substantial carbon sequestration capacity for the adaptation of forest ecosystems to future atmospheric changes.

Various ethnic groups across the globe have practiced traditional cosmetics and many studies on cosmetic plants and their uses in Indonesia have been conducted. However, there is no ethnobotanical information on cosmetic plants and their uses, particularly in Dayak Kayong of Ketapang District, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This study reports on cosmetic plants and their traditional uses by the Dayak Kayong community. We conducted semi-structured interviews from April to June 2022 with 30 respondents living in Nanga Tayap Sub-district in Ketapang District. Non-probability sampling was employed to select respondents based on their knowledge and practice of traditional cosmetics. Three indices, namely Frequency of Citation (FC), Informant Consensus Factor (ICF), and Fidelity Level (FL), were employed to analyze the ethnobotanical data. The Dayak Kayong community utilizes 26 plant species from 20 families for traditional cosmetics. The most frequently used plant part are leaves (34.62%), followed by fruits (19.23%), sap (15.38%), rhizomes (11.54%), flowers (11.5%), roots (3.85%), and seeds (3.85%). Important cosmetic plants based on FL include Aquilaria malaccensis, Areca catechu, Dendrobium sp., Gluta renghas, Lansium domesticum, and Sindora sp. The high FL documented for cosmetic plants in this study needs further investigation into potential plants for use in the cosmetics industry.

Abstract. Ghofur A, Hadisaputro S, Sayono S. 2024. Detection of microfilaria L3 and insecticide resistance among wild-caught mosquito vectors in endemic areas of lymphatic filariasis. Biodiversitas 25: 1975-1983. The decline in the global prevalence of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is evident in the persistent endemic foci in Africa and Southeast Asia. In this context, the presence of infectious and insecticide-resistant mosquitoes and the annual biting rate in the area are key to microfilaria transmission. Therefore, this research aimed to determine insecticide resistance and microfilariae infection in mosquito vectors in endemic areas. In Jenggot and Medono Villages, twice entomological surveys were conducted based on six LF cases, where indoor and outdoor mosquito capturing was carried out in ten houses within a 100 m radius of each case as well as household interviews about insecticide use. In addition, laboratory works were performed for species identification and detection of ovarian dilatation, microfilariae infection, and knockdown resistance mutations. A total of 1,197 and 581 mosquitoes were distributed to five species and their proportions, namely Culex quinquefasciatus (69.59 and 65.40%), Cx. tritaeniorhynchus (5.76 and 0.00%), Cx. vishnui (5.85 and 27.54%), Anopheles vagus (0.58 and 0.00%), and Aedes aegypti (18.21 and 7.06%). The percentage of female mosquito infection, parity, and microfilaria were 66.25 and 86.00%, 63.37 and 70.95%, as well as 0.00 and 1.34%, respectively. Furthermore, TTA-TTT, TTA-CTA, and TTA-TGT base substitutions were reported in codon 1014 of Cx. quinquefasciatus VGSC gene with proportions of 81.66, 1.67, and 26.67%, respectively. The result showed that the vulnerability of the research location to transmission emphasized the necessity for early detection, vector control, and further analyses of the susceptibility of microfilariae to antiparasitic drugs.

Diversity of blood parameters of Oryctolagus cuniculus L. var. domestica reared in different ecological regions of Zarafshan oasis, Uzbekistan. Biodiversitas 25: 1465-1471. In the last 30 years, there has been a trend of rapid pollution of the atmosphere under the influence of climate change, urbanization and anthropogenic factors. According to statistics, the quality of the products obtained from agricultural animals deteriorates under the influence of the above-mentioned stress factors in some regions of Uzbekistan, and the number of livestock decreases annually by 1.8-2.3%. In this regard, there is an increasing need to research the effects of extreme climate and abiotic factors on rabbits' physiological state and biochemical indicators to effectively maintain agricultural animals, including rabbits, in extreme conditions and increase their productivity. This study is one of the first studies of this type, aimed at determining the blood parameters of the Chinchilla breed of rabbit - Oryctolagus cuniculus var. domestica L., raised in the ecological regions of Zarafshan oasis (Uzbekistan) with different air temperatures, rainfall, and atmospheric pollution. The lack of information in scientific sources on the variability of blood parameters in rabbits raised in different ecological regions due to changes in climate indicators and atmospheric air pollution indicates that in-depth research has not been conducted in this regard. According to the results of the research, rearing in ecological regions with different air temperatures, rainfall, and atmospheric pollution has a direct effect on the number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and hemoglobin in the blood of rabbits, the composition of blood proteins, and indicators of cellular and humoral immunity in the blood. Changes in these indicators are observed by environmental pollution. The information presented in the article serves to explain the diversity of blood parameters in O. cuniculus, kept in different ecological environments, and to choose the right approach for feeding rabbits.

Species composition and conservation of amphibians in Central Panay Mountain Range, Antique, Philippines. Biodiversitas 25: 1797-1808. Assessing amphibian species composition and conservation status in Central Panay Mountain Range (CPMR), the largest contiguous forest in West Visayas in central Philippines, provides relevant and updated information on the status and conservation needs of the amphibians. Opportunistic, visual encounter and acoustic surveys were employed across diverse habitats-lowland and lower montane forests, streams, and grasslands. A total of 11 amphibian species from six families were documented, with notable findings including endemic species such as Rough-backed forest frog Platymantis corrugatus Duméril 1853, Dumeril’s wrinkled ground frog Platymantis dorsalis Duméril 1853, and Philippine narrow-mouth toad Kaloula conjuncta negrosensis Taylor 1922, as well as threatened species Panay forest frog Platymantis panayensis Brown, Brown and Alcala 1997, which is endemic to Panay Island. The P. dorsalis emerged as the most abundant, with 127 individuals recorded. Furthermore, two new distribution records of amphibians, narrow-mouth toad Kaloula sp. and panther flying frog Rhacophorus pardalis Günther 1858 were identified, potentially representing previously undocumented species endemic to the Philippines. The survey also revealed local threats posing significant risks to amphibian populations in the area. Several conservation measures have been proposed to protect amphibians and their habitats within CPMR. Given the area's rich biodiversity and ecological integrity, efforts are currently being implemented to establish CPMR as a nationally protected area, and this study contributes to this initiative by providing baseline data on amphibian diversity, underscoring the role of amphibians as ecological indicators of ecosystem health.

Short Communication: Investigation of mecA-positive and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in dairy goat with subclinical mastitis from traditional farms in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 1638-1643. Raw milk has the potential to transmit bacteria resistant to antibiotics and serve as a medium for the development of food-borne illnesses. Staphylococcus aureus is a harmful bacterium that can infect host cells and carry antibiotic-resistant genes. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) which contains mecA coding gene from raw goat milk in Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. 150 raw milk samples were collected from five goat farms in Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. S. aureus was isolated using selective media, and antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted using the Mueller-Hinton agar diffusion method. MRSA was confirmed using the oxacillin and cefotaxime resistance screen agar test, with the presence of mecA genes identified through polymerase chain reaction. The results show that the prevalence of S. aureus was 30.6%. Of the 46 S. aureus isolates, 28 (60.87%) were categorized as MRSA. The mecA gene was observed in 9 (32.14%) MRSA isolates. The presence of MRSA in raw goat milk poses a significant public health threat, as bacteria carrying the mecA gene for antimicrobial resistance can spread through animal products like raw milk. Enhanced hygiene and sanitation protocols in dairy goat farms are essential prevention measures that must be strictly implemented.

The reproduction performance of catching Planiliza subviridis (Teleostei: Mugilidae) in different moon periods from Jepara Coast, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 1823-1830. Mullets (Planiliza subviridis Valenciennes 1836) are highly promising species for aquaculture development. Information on the reproductive performance of wild-caught fish is crucial for enhancing mullet production. This study aimed to assess the gonadal maturity level of female mullets captured during full and new moon phases. Sampling using lift nets was conducted from June to July 2023, comprising 104 individuals, 51 during the new moon and 53 during a full moon. Fish caught during different moon phases were measured for gonad maturation level (GML) and morphometric parameters (body weight, total length, head length, body width, and head width), assessed for gonad somatic index (GSI), fecundity, and egg diameter. Over 50% of individuals were at GML III during dark moon phases, while during bright moon phases, only 10-15% were at GML III; GSI ranged from 0.6-15%. The fecundity of GML I and II females was higher during the full moon (220,212-395,000 eggs per individual) compared to the new moon, while GML III females during dark moon phases ranged from 225,000-250,000 eggs. Mullets exhibit increased reproductive output during the new moon phase and engage in synchronous spawning during moonlight cycles. Therefore, prospects for mullet culture appear promising, with cultivation and domestication suggested during new moon periods.

Selection assessment of promising forms of natural Hippophae rhamnoides (Elaeagnaceae) populations and their offspring in the Kazakhstan Altai Mountains. Biodiversitas 25: 1809-1822. This article presents the results of studying the genetic diversity of sea buckthorn, Hippophae rhamnoides L. in natural populations of the East Kazakhstan region. This made it possible to identify valuable forms based on which targeted breeding work was carried out. Selection work has shown that this species has a unique gene pool. As a result of the analytical selection of H. rhamnoides in the first, second, and third generations, promising seedlings were obtained: ´Podarok Bajtulinu Sh-9-81 (4-6) II´, ´Jubilejnaja Kotuhova T-2-82 (2-22) III´, ´Dolgozhdannaja ?5 (3-24) III´, ´Shetlastinka ?7 (2-24) III´, ´Nesravnennaja Sh-9-81 (3-27) III´, ´Krasavica Sh-9-81 (3-30) III´, ´Solnyshko Sh-12-81 (1-18) III´ with high yield, large fruits, long stalk and low fruit tearing force. Among the male plants, the following forms are distinguished: ´Gustoj Tuman T-2-82 (1-24) III´, ´Ljubimec T-17-82 (2-20) III´, ´Krasavchik K-8-82 (1-34) III´, ´Bogatyr' T-17-82 (2-20) III´ with high winter hardiness and pollen productivity. A scale has been developed for the force of fruit separation and the density of the “cob” for local forms. A selection achievement (variety) patent was received for the ´Jubilejnaja Kotuhova´ form. The next two forms (´Shetlastinka´ and ´Podarok Bajtulinu´) pass the state test for economic usefulness. The richest gene pool of sea buckthorn in the Altai mountainous country indicates its high heterogeneity.

Genetic structure and current distribution of Liriomyza huidobrensis, L. sativae and L. trifolii (Diptera: Agromyzidae) on vegetable crops in Bali, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2104-2114. Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromizidae) is a polyphagous pest that attacks various types of vegetable and ornamental plants throughout the world. The most damaging species are Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard), Liriomyza sativae (Blanchard), and Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess). There have been no reports regarding mapping of population distribution and population genetics of Liriomyza in the Bali region using the Cytochrome C Oxidase Subunit I (COI) approach. This research aims to map the population and genetic structure of L. huidobrensis, L. sativae and L. trifolii on vegetable plants in Bali. This research uses a purposive sampling method which represents vegetable plantings in each district and city in Bali Province. Identification of the Liriomyza spp. gene structure using the COI approach using LCO and HCO primers. The results of the research found that the spatial distribution of invasive leafminer fly species, namely L. sativae and L. trifolii, was evenly distributed throughout the city districts in Bali. The distribution pattern of L. trifolii is uniform with an S2/X value <1, while L. huidobrensis is found in the highland areas with a clustered distribution pattern with an S2/. The genetic distance between the three Liriomyza species found in vegetable plants in Bali is much longer. This means that the three Liriomyza species show very high levels of genetic differentiation in mitochondrial and nuclear genes, and differentiation between species in nuclear genes. This genetic variation can influence the ability of insects to quickly adapt to new environments and contribute to population dynamics and dispersal capacity.
