Abstract

DNA barcoding and phylogeneticreconstruction of shark species landed in Muncar fisheries landing site in comparison with Southern Java fishing port. Biodiversitas 16:55-61. Sharks are one of main fisheries commodity that are currently exploited on a large scale because of their high economic value.The identification of sharks has been a difficult one due to the specimen’s similarity in morphology and mostly have had key diagnosticfeatures removed. This study aimed to identify and to review the status of sharks, and also to reconstruct the shark species that werelanded at South Java fishing port using molecular approaches. The DNA amplification was using cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial oflocus and 600-700 basepairs. A total of seven species from 59 individuals was identified including Alopias pelagicus, Carcharhinusfalciformis, C. sorrah, C. amblyrhynchos, Galeocerdo cuvier, Atelomycterus marmoratus, and Spyrna lewini. The diversity of sharkspecies landed in Muncar during the last 2 years has been decreased. The identified sharks species in this study sites were about 18% ofall Indonesian sharks. The result of this study is expected help the Government to manage shark fisheries in Indonesia.

Avasthi S, GautamAK, Bhadauria R. 2015. Occurrence of leaf spot diseases on Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. caused by Curvularia species from Madhya Pradesh, India. Biodiversitas 16: 79-83. During 2010-2011, occurrence of leaf spot diseases was observed on Aloevera plants grown in various nurseries of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. The typical disease symptoms were observed on the abaxialsurface, tips and spiny margins of leaves. Disease spots were sunken, dry, necrotic, dark maroon to dark brown in color. On the basis ofmorphological and microscopic characteristics of the fungus, two species of Curvularia i.e. Curvularia lunata and Curvularia ovoidea,were found to be associated with the leaf spot diseases. Koch’s postulate was applied to confirm the causal organisms of the diseases.According to the literature, this is the first report of leaf spot disease on A. vera caused by Curvularia lunata from Madhya Pradesh, andthe first report of Curvularia ovoidea from India.

Pourbabaei H, Eskandari M, Daryaei MG, Heydari M. 2015. The interaction between diversity of herbaceous species and history of planting, Masal's forests, Guilan Province, Iran. Biodiversitas 16: 84-88. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the plantation age and diversity of herbaceous species. The study area is located in the Masal's plantations of Guilan in north of Iran. For this purpose, 60 plots were sampled by a randomized-systematic method throughout the study area in order to record the herbaceous species, the Whitaker's nested plot was applied and the minimal area was obtained 64 m2 (8 x 8 m). In order to evaluate the plant diversity, some indices including Shannon-Wiener's diversity (H'), species richness (S) and Smith-Wilson's evenness (Evar) were utilized. Results indicated that 31 herbaceous species were found in two plantations. There were significant differences between two sites regarding H' and Evar. Whereas, there was no significant difference in view of species richness between two sites. In addition, results revealed that older plantation has not caused to increase richness and evenness of species.

Tapilatu RF, Ballamu F. 2015. Nest temperatures of the Piai and Sayang Islands green turtle (Chelonia mydas) rookeries, Raja Ampat Papua, Indonesia: Implications for hatchling sex ratios. Biodiversitas 16: 102-107. Sex determination and hatching success in sea turtles is temperature dependent. Warmer sand temperatures may skew sea turtle population sex ratios towards predominantly females and high sand temperatures may also decrease hatching success. Therefore, understanding nest temperatures is important for conservation programs, including the evaluation of the potential impact of global climate change. Nest temperatures were monitored during the 2013 nesting season of the green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas, at Piai and Sayang Islands, Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia. Nest temperatures increased from 29oC early in the incubation to 34-36oC in the middle, before decreasing again. Monitored nest temperatures were similar across all beaches. Nest temperatures increased 2-4oC during the middle third of incubation due to metabolic heating. Hatchling sex ratio inferred from nest temperature profiles indicated a strong female bias. This finding is consistent with the relatively warm thermal profiles of the majority of the nesting beaches. This also included some extremely warm nest temperatures that were associated with lower hatching success. Information from this study provides a foundation for developing conservation strategies for enhancing hatchling production with optimal sex ratios at the most important nesting beaches for the western Pacific green sea turtle. This study is the first comprehensive assessment of sex ratios for green sea turtles in Raja Ampat and represents the initiation of a long-term database that can be used at a local level to develop strategies that could potentially offset the impact of long-term climate change on the western Pacific green sea turtle.

Biodiversitas 16: 95-101. Biodiversityconservation is increasingly considered a key to sustainable forest management and understanding biodiversity in forest ecosystems isessential to reveal forest dynamics, so this study aims to compare tree and shrub species diversity and vertical species distributionbetween two managed and unmanaged forest stands. The study area was consisted of two adjacent districts in which two differentmanagement practices were implemented. In 1000 m2 circular plots, type of species and diameter at breast height (D.B.H) of all treeslarger than 2.5 cm as well as type of species of all shrubs and vertical distribution of tree species were recorded. In addition to richness,evenness and heterogeneity indices were calculated for whole tree and shrub species and also for each tree layer. The results showed thattree species diversity indices were significantly greater in the unmanaged area, whereas richness and heterogeneity indices of shrubswere greater in the managed area. Comparing the biodiversity indices indicated that richness index had the greatest value in theunderstorey and heterogeneity indices were greatest in the middle storey in both regions. Greater amounts of evenness were detected inthe middle- and over storey of unmanaged and managed areas, respectively. As forestry operations result in change in various forestcharacteristics such as species diversity, it is essential to assess and monitor the effect of logging operations on forest diversityHyrcanian forests of Iran.

Feedinghabit and length weight relationship of keureling fish, Tor tambra Valenciennes, 1842 (Cyprinidae) from the western region of Aceh Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 16: 89-94. The objective of the present study was to describe the aspects of feeding habit and lengthweightrelationship of keureling fish Tor tambra, this information is crucial to plan a conservation startegy for this species. A series ofsamples were taken between June and September 2012 and February 2014 in the two main rivers of western Aceh i.e. the Sikundo andNagan Rivers. A total of 48 and 38 fish were caught during the study in Nagan and Sikundo Rivers, respectively. Stomach contentanalysis suggested that freshwater green algae and earthworms were the main food items for T. tambra, indicating an omnivorousfeeding habit. In addition, the length-weight relationship revealed that T. tambra has an allometric negative growth pattern from allpopulations, and the condition factors indicate the rivers are still in good condition and support fish life.

Kaur A, Atri NS, Kaur M. 2014. Diversity of coprophilous species of Panaeolus (Psathyrellaceae, Agaricales) from Punjab, India. Biodiversitas 15: 115-130. An account of 16 Panaeolus species collected from a variety of coprophilous habitats of Punjab state in India is described and discussed. Out of these, P. alcidis, P. castaneifolius, P. papilionaceus var. parvisporus, P. tropicalis and P. venezolanus are new records for India while P. acuminatus, P. antillarum, P. ater, P. solidipes, and P. sphinctrinus are new reports for north India. Panaeolus subbalteatus and P. cyanescens are new records for Punjab state. A key to the taxa explored is also provided.

Asra R, Syamsuardi, Mansyurdin, Witono JR. 2014. The study of genetic diversity of Daemonorops draco (Palmae) using ISSR markers. Biodiversitas 15: 109-114. The genetic diversity in five populations of Daemonorops draco (Willd.) Blume (Jernang: in Bahasa Indonesia) was analyzed using Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) markers. The screening results from using 15 ISSR primers showed that only 5 of ISSR primers had clear and reproducible bands. Based on the data from the matrix binary analyzed using POPGENE version 3.2, the highest genetic diversity was found in the Sepintun population at 0.0969 average heterozygosis (H) and 0.146 average Shannon Index (I). The heterozygosis calculation of the total population (HT) was 0.2571. The heterozygosis value within a population (HS=0.0704) was smaller than that between populations (DST=0.1867). Using the clustering analysis program Pastversion 32 on 43 individuals of D. draco, we found that there were three groups of D. draco. Group A consisted of 8 individuals in the Bengayoan population, group B consisted of 9 units in the Nunusan population and group C consisted of three populations; Tebo, Sepintun and Mandiangin consisted of 10, 8 and 8 individuals. The genetic similarity varied among all populations with the values between 0.07-0.93.

Mir SA, Mishra AK, Reshi ZA, Sharma MP. 2014. New Records of Pteridophytes for Kashmir Valley, India. Biodiversitas 15: 131-136. During the recent field survey of district Shopian four species of Pteridophytes are reported for the first time that constitutes new recordsfor Kashmir valley. These species are Hypolepis polypodioides (Blume) Hook, Pteris stenophylla Wall. ex Hook. & Grev., Dryopterissubimpressa Loyal and Dryopteris wallichiana (Spreng.) Hylander. The diagnostic features of H. polypodioides are presence of longcreepingslender rhizome and eglandular, colorless or brown tinged hairs throughout the frond. P. stenophylla is characterized by havingdimorphic fronds and 3 to 5 pinnae clustered at stipe apex. D. subimpressa is marked by pale-green lamina and the largest basiscopicbasal pinnule in the lowest pair of pinnae. Similarly, the characteristic features of D. wallichiana are presence of huge frond size,glossier and dark-green lamina and dense browner scales in stipe and rachis. In present communication taxonomic description,synonyms, ecology and photographs are provided for each of these newly recorded species.

Kemka-Evans CI, Okoli B, Nwachukwu CU. 2014. Epidermal studies of three species of Vernonia Schreber in Southern Nigeria. Biodiversitas 15: 137-141.The leaf epidermal studies of three species of Vernonia namely V. cinerea (L) Less, V. amygdalina Delile.(bitter leaf and non-bitter leaf variety) and V. conferta Benth. were undertaken with the aim of revealing their foliar characters whichwill enhance their identification and determination of their taxonomic relationship. Matured leaves were soaked in Sodium OxochlorateII for 24hours to separate the epidermal surfaces. Data from the measurement of stomata and epidermal cells were analyzed. Thepresence of diagnostic characters such as contiguous stomata and sinuous anticlinal walls on the abaxial leaf surface of non-bitter varietyof V. amygdalina and on both leaf surfaces (adaxial and abaxial) of V. cinerea are of taxonomic importance. The irregular T-shapedtrichomes on the leaf surfaces of V. amygdalina (bitter leaf) and the cuticular striations on the adaxial surface of the same taxa could beused to delimit the taxa from the other species. The distribution of the stomata show hypoamphistomatic in all the three species studied.Anomocytic stomata occurred on all the taxa studied. Anisocytic stomata were found on the abaxial surface of V. conferta. Thesecharacters examined revealed interspecies relationship among the three species and also suggest that V. amygdalina (non bitter leaf) is avariety of V. amygdalina (bitter leaf) and should not be regard as another species of Vernonia. The epidermal leaf characters of V. amygdalina (non-bitter leaf) is also been reported for the first time.
