Abstract. Rifqiyati N, Wahyuni A. 2019. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) leaf  infusion effect on mammary gland activity and kidney function of lactating rats. Nusantara Bioscience 11: 101-105. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill) leaf, traditionally, is believed to have a potential in increasing and smoothing breast milk production. This study aimed to determine the effect of fennel leaf infusion on milk production and to know the side effects of its use. The material used in the research was infusion of fennel leaves (Foeniculum vulgare Mill) collected from Kopeng, Central Java. The research utilized 12 female rats each with 5 newborns off springs. The experiment was designed in Completed Random Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications. Histological preparation of mammary glands was set using paraffin method with HE staining. Kidney function was observed through uric acid level in the blood. The results showed that the diameter of lactiferous ducts and of its lumen diameter were significantly influenced by 15 days fennel leaf infusion treatment. The largest lactiferous duct diameter observed was on P3 treatment group (452.97 ± 75.033 µm) and the smallest was observed in control groups (273.17 ± 38.746 µm). The numbers of active alveoli observed in treatment groups, i.e., in P1 (20 g/300  mL), P2 (40 g/300  mL), and P3 (60 g/300  mL), increased than inactive alveoli. The blood uric acid level observed was 4.0-4.6 mg/dl. The results suggested that the infusion of fennel leaf with a treatment dose of 60 g infusion in 300  mL distilled water administered for 15 days can significantly increase the diameter of lactiferous lumen of female rat mammary glands, and increase the diameter of the alveoli and the number of active alveolar mammary glands. Histological picture of mammary gland also showed that the female rats treated with dose of 60g infusion per 300  mL aquadest increased milk secretion and than the other treatment groups. The treatment also showed no significant side effects.

Abstract. Kalbi S, Fallah A, Hojjati SM. 2014. Using and comparing two nonparametric methods (CART and RF) and SPOT-HRG satellite data to predictive tree diversity distribution. Nusantara Bioscience 6: 57-62. The prediction of spatial distributions of tree species by means of survey data has recently been used for conservation planning. Numerous methods have been developed for building species habitat suitability models. The present study was carried out to find the possible proper relationships between tree species diversity indices and SPOT-HRG reflectance values in Hyrcanian forests, North of Iran. Two different modeling techniques, Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and Random Forest (RF), were fitted to the data in order to find the most successfully model. Simpson, Shannon diversity and the reciprocal of Simpson indices were used for estimating tree diversity. After collecting terrestrial information on trees in the 100 samples, the tree diversity indices were calculated in each plot. RF with determinate coefficient and RMSE from 56.3 to 63.9 and RMSE from 0.15 to 0.84 has better results than CART algorithms with determinate coefficient 42.3 to 63.3 and RMSE from 0.188 to 0.88. Overall the results showed that the SPOT-HRG satellite data and nonparametric regression could be useful for estimating tree diversity in Hyrcanian forests, North of Iran.

Abstract. Syamsuwida D, Aminah A. 2020. Phenology and potential reproduction of turi (Sesbania grandiflora) at Cibinong, Bogor, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 12: 13-20. Turi (Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers.) is one of a prospectus energy woody species to be developed in establishing renewable energy base forest plantation. The development of this species cannot be separated from the basic information of its reproductive biology. The study was aimed to evaluate flowering phenology and reproductive potency of S. grandiflora so that information could be elaborated to estimate the fruit production potential produced. The research method was carried out by direct observation of samples of flowering trees. Data were analyzed descriptively. The number of tree samples observed for flower and fruit development and reproductive success of 10 trees, from each tree were observed three flowering branches distinguished from the west and east branches. The results showed that S. grandiflora did not experience generative bud dormancy so that flower initiation was thought to occur throughout the year and could flower and bear fruit throughout the year. S. grandiflora at the observation location has a flowering-fruiting development cycle of about 3-4 months which begins with the emergence of generative bud at the time of the observation in April and developed into flower shoot in the same month. Blooming flower (anthesis) in May, develop into young fruit in June. Mature fruits can be harvested in June-July. The reproductive potency of S. grandiflora was low with a value of fruit set (fruit/flower ratio) at the eastern and western branches were 19% ± 0.07 and 17%±0.06 and seed set (seed/ovule ratio) of 87% ± 0.12 and 83% ± 0.16, respectively. Reproductive success was 18% ± 0.07 for the eastern branches and 17% ± 0.05 for the western branches. Most reproductive variables of S. grandiflora did not show a significant difference between the eastern and western branches (P>0.05), except for fruit number (P<0.05).

Abstract. Purba JH, Sasmita N, Komara LL, Nesimnasi N. 2019. Comparison of seed dormancy breaking of Eusideroxylon zwageri from Bali and Kalimantan soaked with sodium nitrophenolate growth regulator. Nusantara Bioscience 11: 146-152. Eusideroxylon zwageri is a very strong and durable wood, which can be used as building materials. This wood plant needs 6-12 months to germinate, but it can be shorted with special treatment (e.g. cracking). Therefore, it is important to conduct research to stimulate E. zwageri seed germination using sodium nitrophenolate growth regulator. The purpose of this study was to analyze the comparison of the fastest time to breaking E. zwageri seed dormancy from the Bali and Kalimantan island. The research method was factorial randomized block design, using the X factor (soaking time) and Y factor (sodium nitrophenolate growth regulator). There were four soaking time treatment, i.e., immersed (soaked in a really short time), 12 and 24 hours soaking time. While the Y factor was the concentration of sodium nitrophenolate with 4 treatments: without sodium nitrophenolate solution or 0 mL (control), soaked in a 1 mL/L of water, 2 mL/L of water and 3 mL/L of water solution. The study results showed the best treatment of E. zwageri seeds germination speed was soaked for 24 hours, and by giving 0,3% sodium nitrophenolate concentration, while the interactions of both showed no significant effect. The soaked time treatment, sodium nitrophenolate concentration, and the interaction of both show no significant effect on germination percentage. The breaking of E. zwageri seed dormancy from Kalimantan has a shorter time to germinate than E. zwageri seeds from Bali.

Lilium longiflorum Thunb., an Easter lily, is a common ornamental plant used as potted plant, cut flower, cosmetic and medicine. The research on tissue culture technique to induce shoots and callus is expected to increase the yield of lilies quickly and efficiently. This study aims to determine the effect of plant growth regulator combination of Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) and Benzyl Amino Purine (BAP) on the development of leaf culture and the best concentration for callus induction and shoots of lily plants. This study was conducted in a completely randomized design using leaf explants in Vacin and Went medium, with combination of NAA and BAP (0; 0.5; 1 mg..L-1 ) as the treatments. The result of the eight-week observations shows that the plant growth regulators significantly affected either in days initiation callus, days initiation of shoot, percentage of callus, percentage of shoot, diameter of callus, no of shoot and length of shoot. The combination of 1 mg.L-1 NAA and BAP had the best effect in the percentage of explants forming shoots (100%), means number of shoots (5.8), and means length of shoot (11.6 cm).

Abstract. Nahdi MS, Kurniawan AP. 2019. Ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants in karst environment in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 11: 133-141. The use of traditional medicinal plants has been a culture of the people in Yogyakarta including in Gunung Kidul District. This research aims to reveal information on medicinal plants in karst environment in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia by focusing on how medicinal plants are used, managed and inherited by the community. The research was conducted in Planjan Village and Giricahyo Village in Gunung Kidul District from June to September 2018. The method used in collecting data was exploratory survey and Participatory Rural Appraisal. Data of community knowledge and uses of medicinal plants were obtained through in-depth interview and structured interview. The identification of species was applied to every plant used. The study found that there are 46 species from 26 families used by the people in the two villages for medical treatments with the largest number of species is from Zingiberaceae family, followed by Fabaceae and Rutaceae. The medicinal plants are mostly packaged into six herbal medicinal plants called jamu beras kencur, kunir asem, paitan, kebyokan (uyup uyup), sirih and temu lawak with different compositions and efficacies. The result showed that people's knowledge about medicinal plants is obtained from elders who have a long experience in making concoction and trading the medicinal plants as traditional herbal medicine. In addition, the people are also obtained additional knowledge from any sources to make the medical plants to have economic value to improve their welfare. Most of the medicinal plants are obtained from the outside of the villages since it is impossible to cultivate in karst soils. Thus, the study is expected to help develop the local potential of medicinal plants to become more modern, can support the conservation of local wisdom and plant biodiversity, as well as be used as a source of material for developing national database on medicinal plant and its usage.

Nusantara Bioscience 11: 142-145. Bhoi cake is one of the traditional Acehnese dry snacks with basic ingredients of rice flour or wheat flour, castor sugar, eggs and vanilla. This study aims to evaluate nutritional value and consumer acceptance by organoleptic tests on bhoi cake substituted with pumpkin flour. Design of the study was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and three replications. The treatments was the various level of pumpkin flour substitution (0%, 20%, 30%, and 40%). Consumer acceptability with the organoleptic test was carried out by 20 panelists, namely students of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Syiah Kuala University using a 5 points hedonic scale. The results showed that the nutritional value of bhoi cake with pumpkin flour substitution was good and have appropriate nutritional value. Sensory evaluation by organoleptic test showed that 30% pumpkin flour substitution was the best formula preferred by the panelist. Taste, aroma, color, texture and overall acceptability of formula C (30% substitution of pumpkin flour) of bhoi cake had the highest score (likes), with the characteristics of the bhoi cake were golden yellow, fragrant aroma, sweet taste, and soft texture.

The application of palm-oil waste as organic materials on three pineapple accessions cultivated on post-tin mining land in Bangka Island, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 12: 40-45. Tin mining activities in Bangka Island have produced a vast extent of critical lands that contain clay and tailings. Bangka local pineapple accessions have a high potential to be cultivated in the post-tin mining area as they are able to adapt to drought. The aim of this research was to investigate the growth performance of three pineapple accessions planted on post-tin mining land in Bangka by utilizing solid waste of oil palm as organic materials. The study was conducted in Dwi Makmur village, Merawang Sub-district, Bangka District from November 2017 to June 2019. The experiment used Factorial Completely Randomized Design (FCRD) with two factors: the first was three pineapple accessions (i.e. Toboali Bikang, Peranak and Bogor) and the second was palm oil solid waste (i.e. palm oil empty bunch (POEB) and palm oil bare ash (POBA)). We measured the parameters of vegetative and generative and the values were compared using Fisher test followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test (? 0.05). We also conducted organoleptic tests and total dissolved solid tests to assess the quality of the fruit. We found that the application of POEB as organic materials affected the vegetative and generative parameters. We also found that the interaction of POEB with Peranak accession resulted in the best fruit productivity. Our results suggest that Peranak accession is potential to be cultivated in post-tin mining land in Bangka with the application of palm oil empty bunch as organic materials.

Abstract. Rahayu SYS, Prihatini W. 2020. Characterization of metallothionein protein from hepatopancreas organ of Pilsbryoconcha exilis collected from Cikaniki River, Western Java, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 12: 1-5. Freshwater environment, undergoing various changes due to the presence of dangerous toxic anthropogenic waste. It causes pressure on the freshwater biota that lives in it, such as Pilsbryoconcha exilis mussel at the bottom of freshwater. This pressure is controlled by the body through the synthesis of a set of stress proteins. Endogenous proteins, metallothionein (MT), in the body of freshwater biota absorb heavy metals in the body of biota, in the form of stress control. This research identified MT protein on P. exilis from contaminated waters such as the Cikaniki river with the average of mercury levels in water, sediment, and hepatopancreas of mussels using AAS method were 0.001 mg/L, 0.120 mg/L, and 1.318 mg/L respectively. Hepatopancreas of P. exilis was extracted using a Tissue Extraction Reagent I kit (Invitrogen), with procedures following the factory manual. The extract was purified by filtration using Sephadec 50; then, the filtration results were migrated together with the PageRuler TM Unstained Low Range Protein Ladder (Fermentas) in Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS PAGE) gel medium on Biorad Protein II electrophoresis. After completion of electrophoresis, the gel was stained using Page Blue Protein Staining Solution (Fermentas), following the factory manual procedure. Characterization at this research has succeeded in obtaining the MT-I isoform protein measuring 5, 10, and 25 kDa from the hepatopancreas organ of P. exilis.

Abstract. Susanto D, Auliana, Kusuma R, Amirta R. 2019. Effect of organic manure fertilizer on the growth of Macaranga gigantea. Nusantara Bioscience 11: 166-171. M. gigantea planting research has been conducted in several habitats such as natural forest gaps, drained peatland and soil with highly degraded land for rehabilitation. This study investigated the effect of organic manure fertilization on soil, tissue chemical properties and growth performance of Macaranga gigantea planted at dense space of 2,5 m x 2,5 m. The experiment used a randomized block design with treatment of fertilization using goat manure with five gradual concentrations namely P0 (0 g), P1 (100 g), P2 (200 g), P3 (300 g) and P4 (400 g) in which each treatment consisted of three groups with 20 replications for each group, totaling 300 seedlings observed. The results showed that organic manure fertilization promoted stem height, stem diameter, leaf number and nutrient concentrations in the leaves of four-month-old M. gigantea. The best growth performance was gained from the treatment of P3 (300 g), followed by P2, P1, P4, and P0. The highest nutrient contained in leave tissue was potassium, followed by calcium, magnesium, nitrogen and available phosphorus.
