Abstract

Smart Tourism Technologies (STTs) have become a key driver of digital transformation in the tourism industry, offering new opportunities to enhance tourist experiences and destination competitiveness. However, existing studies remain fragmented across different technological contexts and research perspectives. This study aims to systematically review the literature on the relationship between Smart Tourism Technologies and Tourist Experience. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Relevant articles were identified through international scholarly databases and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and mobile applications are the most frequently studied technologies. These technologies positively influence tourist experience by improving information accessibility, personalization, interactivity, convenience, and satisfaction. Despite these benefits, challenges related to data privacy, digital inequality, and technological readiness remain significant. This review provides insights for researchers and practitioners while identifying future research opportunities in smart tourism.

Abstract

Tourism as a Driver of the Local Economy: Analysis of the Impact of Mutiara Beach Development on the Livelihoods of Gumanano Village Community, Central Buton Regency. This study aims to analyze the economic impact of Mutiara Beach tourism development on the livelihoods of local communities in Gumanano Village, Mawasangka District, Central Buton Regency. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, with informants selected via purposive sampling. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, with validity ensured through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings indicate that the tourism sector positively influences community livelihoods through increased income, employment creation, and micro, small, and medium enteNrprise (MSME) growth. Based on the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, tourism has strengthened communities’ financial, social, human, and physical capital. An economic multiplier effect from tourism activities was also identified. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including limited business capital, suboptimal destination promotion, and the risk of economic dependency. The study recommends community-based tourism management oriented toward sustainable empowerment to ensure equitable distribution of economic benefits.

Abstract

Tourism is a strategic sector with great potential to drive local economic growth, particularly through the involvement of micro business actors as a key component of the tourism ecosystem. This study aims to examine the role of tourism as a driver of the local economy from the perspective of micro business actors, identify the structural challenges they face, and describe the adaptation strategies applied in responding to the dynamics of the tourism sector. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory research design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies of micro business actors operating in tourist areas, including culinary businesses, handicrafts, transportation services, simple lodging, and other tourism support services. Data analysis used the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2023), with data validity ensured through source and method triangulation. The results show that tourism plays a real role in increasing income, creating local jobs, and driving the diversification of micro business products. However, micro business actors still face four main challenges: limited access to capital, income fluctuations due to dependence on the tourist season, limited managerial and digital capacity, and competitive pressure from business actors outside the region. In response, micro business actors apply strategies of strengthening local product identity, business network collaboration, and the adoption of digital marketing. This study concludes that the inclusion of micro businesses in the tourism value chain is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving just and sustainable tourism development, requiring affirmative policies that are more systematically and structurally oriented toward local micro business actors.

Abstract

Sustainable tourism development requires effective collaboration among multiple stakeholders to ensure balanced economic growth, environmental conservation, and community well-being. Despite increasing attention to stakeholder collaboration in tourism studies, limited research has explained how collaborative governance facilitates value co-creation in emerging tourism destinations. This study aims to explore how stakeholder collaboration contributes to sustainable tourism development through collaborative governance in Mandalika, Indonesia. A qualitative case study approach was employed using semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify key patterns of stakeholder interaction and governance processes. The findings reveal that stakeholder collaboration is strengthened through institutional coordination, trust-building, and participatory decision-making, which collectively enable value co-creation in the form of tourism innovation, community empowerment, cultural preservation, enhanced tourist experiences, and local economic development. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including unequal community participation, disparities in economic benefit distribution, and differences in institutional capacity. This study proposes an Integrated Sustainable Tourism Collaboration Model that demonstrates the dynamic relationship between stakeholder collaboration, collaborative governance, value co-creation, and sustainable tourism development. The proposed model extends the understanding of sustainable destination governance while providing practical insights for policymakers and destination managers seeking to strengthen collaborative tourism development in emerging destinations.

Abstract

Community engagement plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable tourism by balancing tourism growth with environmental sustainability. However, limited research has explored how community participation simultaneously supports economic development and environmental conservation within community-based tourism destinations. This study aims to examine the role of community engagement in fostering sustainable tourism development. A qualitative multiple case study approach was employed involving 25 participants, including local community leaders, tourism entrepreneurs, government officials, destination managers, and environmental organizations. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, focus group discussions, and document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal four major themes: community participation strengthens tourism governance through inclusive decision-making; community-led initiatives enhance environmental stewardship; active engagement promotes inclusive tourism growth by creating local economic opportunities; and balancing tourism growth with environmental sustainability remains challenged by increasing tourism pressure, unequal participation, and institutional coordination. The study concludes that meaningful community engagement serves as a strategic governance mechanism linking tourism development with environmental conservation. The findings contribute to sustainable tourism literature by emphasizing collaborative governance and provide practical recommendations for policymakers and destination managers to strengthen community empowerment and participatory tourism planning.
