Abstract

The study was intended to establish whether there is a relationship between liquidity management and profitability of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs), which are tools of poverty alleviation, among other functions in an economy. A cross-sectional descriptive design involving both qualitative and quantitative approaches was adopted. A sample of 371 respondents was systematically sampled from four districts of Wakiso, Mukono, Kampala, and Jinja in Uganda. Findings revealed that liquidity management practices of MSMEs were ineffective, negatively impacting their profitability. Matching source and maturity terms of funds with activities and professionalized cash planning and investment are among our recommendations.

Abstract

The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in extraordinary shocks to businesses with unfavorable effects on their current capacities. To maintain a business competitive advantage, providing sustainable innovative products or services is inevitable. Small and medium-sized enterprises' survival, customer satisfaction, and lack of longevity continue to spark public debate and scholarly interest. Inadequate innovative strategy is one of the key problems to which poor customer satisfaction may be attributed. The purpose of conducting this particular study is to find out the relationship between innovative strategy and sustainable customer satisfaction amongst selected small and medium-sized enterprises in Lagos State. This paper conducted a survey research approach, using a sample size of 742, consisting of owner-managers of selected SMEs in Lagos State. Data was gathered using a standardized questionnaire that was adopted and validated for the research. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the questionnaire items varies from 0.77 to 0.88. The response rate to the questionnaire was 92.6%. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson product-moment correlation and regression analysis). The analysis of the data showed that in Lagos State, there was a strong link between innovative strategy and customer satisfaction (= 0.090, t = 3.029, F = 9.176, p <0.05). This paper concluded that innovative strategy is a resource that improves customer satisfaction, sustainability, and business performance with theoretical and practical implications. It is recommended that SMEs in Lagos State incorporate innovative strategy and sustainability into their strategic vision and plans to enhance competitive advantage, since it may be beneficial for the environment, marketing, product and service developments.

Abstract

In this world we live in with urgent problems, climate crisis, in particular, localism and/or localization can be one answer to divert from global capitalism towards an alternative form of organization. SMEs account for around 99.7 % of the total number of enterprises, and 70% of total employment, in Japan. This figure is similar elsewhere in the world. It shows their economic and social importance at the local, regional and national levels. In fact, SMEs are rooted in the local society in terms not only of the economy but also tradition, culture and history. Thus, their sustainability correlates with local sustainability and regeneration. And, it is the local resources and environmental protection that both rely on along with agriculture, forestry, and fishery. It would be the focal point to look into the correlation between SMEs and the local economy possibly for localization. This paper focuses on SME under such circumstances concerning how they would regenerate their economic sustainability and be challenging self-sufficiency in association with the locals. For this, the paper argues how they cooperate and/or collaborate with the local institutions, government, and other enterprises, creating a type of associational economy. Regarding such issues, several case studies in Japan are provided. In looking these case studies through their managerial and organizational direction, it is indicated that they are giving a concrete form of “so-called” localization. In actuality, localism and/or localization are rather strange terms in Japan. Therefore, localism and localization are examined from the viewpoint how these ideas correspond with the regeneration of local economy. The literature review showed: (1) Localism is a social movement distinctive from localization. (2) Localization is a theory that would be realized through the associational economy and attained its vision of resolving the climate crisis. (3) Localism could indicate localization, but not necessarily. (4) It is found that membership philosophy is the base for this economy in Japan, while a similar kind of philosophy may be found or created for elsewhere.

Abstract

Health insurance is a hedge against financial risks, unexpected health losses, and expenditures (Folland, 2009). Therefore, health insurance helps to ensure social security. Health insurance is an important instrument to reduce the financial burden on people in general and beneficiaries in particular when providing medical care, thus making health services more accessible. In their efforts, the governments of all countries are aiming to make this type of insurance nationwide and comprehensive. However, along with the aim of increasing the coverage for the people related to medical examination and treatment costs, now a large part of the people is taking advantage and abusing the health insurance fund for personal interests. In the world, research on insurance fraud and abuse has been done in ethical or social aspects. However, the profiteering and abuse of health insurance funds in Vietnam is now attributed to many loopholes in the implementation process, thus leading to the idea that if others can do it, we can also do it. This study is conducted to examine the influence of perceived fairness in terms of the process, attitude, and distribution outcomes on the intention to fraud from health insurance. The sample of this study included 139 people who received medical examination and treatment with health insurance cards at hospitals in Hanoi city.

Abstract

This paper aims to direct the socio-ecological system as a construct of organizational resilience able to include research to create a coherent and comprehensive analysis of the implications of uncertainty, complexity, discontinuity, and adversity. The analysis departs from the development of conceptualizations, definitions, methods, functions, operations, assessments, and measures. The methodology employed is based on transdisciplinary approaches to a qualitative and reflective analysis of the theoretical and empirical literature review. It is concluded that an integrated approach to organizational resilience must consider a socio-ecological system to assess the environmental implications of uncertainty, complexity, discontinuity, and adversity as a source of bouncing back and forward from organizational crises.

Abstract

Islamic Financial Institutions of Zakat and Waqf are considered Shariah-compliant institutions that effectively developed and impacted the role of developing Micro and Small Enterprises by sharing similar values, principles, and market activities under the Shariah-compliant business sector. Despite its relevancy, there is still low penetration of these Islamic financial institutions as instruments for business development in Gombe State Nigeria. However, the financing measures of MSEs are essential for societal development and economic growth of any society but receive less attention in the study area. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Islamic Financial Institutions of Zakat and Waqf on the development of MSEs in Gombe State Nigeria. A qualitative methodology was used in the research as a tool for gathering data through the review of relevant literature as primary sources and interviews with pertinent personnel on the topic from various perspectives as secondary sources. The findings justified that the development of MSEs with a significant number of business units and financing from Islamic financial institutions of Zakat and Waqf indicates a positive direction for the promotion and development of MSEs in Gombe State Nigeria. It also recommends that Zakat and Waqf funds can be used as new strategies for creating a partnership with internal and external investors for more effective models and application techniques for financing MSEs and addressing the rate of poverty and unemployment in the study area.

Abstract

Using data from in-depth interviews with owner-managers of small firms in the Philippines, we studied the entrepreneurial process experienced by nascent entrepreneurs in starting new businesses during the pandemic. We examined the effects of the developing pandemic crisis on both the nascent entrepreneur and the nascent enterprise. We found that most entrepreneurs were driven by the necessity to find alternative sources of income during the pandemic. Two common features identified among pandemic startup entrepreneurs were the ability to recognize new market opportunities quickly and use bricolage to begin the entrepreneurial process despite resource constraints. We also found that online social capital built mainly on social media platforms played an important role in the process as mobility restrictions hampered traditional offline social networks.
