Abstract

Ilmu Kalam is a branch of Islamic knowledge that focuses on theological discourse through rational and logical approaches. In the face of contemporary challenges, Ilmu Kalam must evolve to address complex modern issues that affect both individual and collective life. This article explores the relevance and contribution of Ilmu Kalam in responding to current topics such as religious pluralism, human rights, environmental crisis, modern science, and digital ethics. The thoughts of key Muslim scholars like Muhammad Arkoun, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, Harun Nasution, and M. Amin Abdullah are referenced to reinterpret core Islamic teachings in harmony with modern realities. This approach enables Ilmu Kalam not only to preserve essential theological principles but also to play a significant role in shaping a just, tolerant, inclusive, and sustainable society. Therefore, Ilmu Kalam should continue to be developed as a dynamic and forward-thinking discipline that bridges Islamic values with the demands and complexities of contemporary life.

Abstract

The mental health of Generation Z adolescents is under serious pressure due to technological developments, value disruption from globalization, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This phenomenon is marked by increasing symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression, which are often not addressed holistically. This article explores the potential of Islamic theology as an integrative approach to healing the mental health of Gen Z adolescents. Using a literature review method covering sources from 2020–2025, the study finds that Ilmu Kalam principles such as tawhid (divine oneness), qadar (destiny), and the wisdom behind trials provide a profound rational-spiritual framework for understanding suffering and fostering psychological resilience. Practices such as dhikr (remembrance of God), tawakkul (trust in God), patience, and Islamic counseling-based therapy show significant effectiveness in improving adolescents' mental well-being. However, the implementation of Ilmu Kalam faces challenges, including social stigma, the complexity of theological language, and a lack of youth-friendly digital platforms. Therefore, adaptive strategies such as the digitalization of Islamic theology content, multidisciplinary collaboration, and strengthened intervention research become crucial.

Abstract

Contemporary Qur’anic exegetical studies demonstrate a strong tendency toward multidisciplinary approaches, one of which is the integration of sociological perspectives. This approach is significant because the Qur’an functions not only as a normative text but also as a guide that interacts with dynamic social realities. This article aims to analyze the contribution of sociological approaches to the development of Qur’anic exegetical methodology, to explain the application of sociological theories in the analysis of Qur’anic verses, and to assess the relevance and challenges of integrating sociological perspectives into tafsir studies. Employing a qualitative approach through library research on classical and contemporary tafsir literature, works in the sociology of religion, and related studies, this article finds that sociological approaches play an important role in the contextualization of verses, the development of thematically oriented tafsir based on social issues, and responses to contemporary socio-religious problems such as social justice, gender equality, and environmental crises. Nevertheless, this approach also faces methodological and theological challenges, particularly the potential for tension with normative exegetical interpretations. The article concludes that the integration of sociology enriches Qur’anic exegesis when applied critically and grounded in the established principles of tafsir methodology.

Abstract

Recent developments in Islamic studies have begun to show signs that Islam is no longer understood solely in historical and doctrinal terms, but has become a complex phenomenon. In its evolution, various approaches have emerged to examine different dimensions of Islamic teachings. One approach that can be employed to understand religious teachings is the philosophical approach. This paper aims to describe the contribution of the philosophical approach to Islamic studies, including its application in Qur’anic studies. Using a qualitative method of library research, this paper finds that, first, the philosophical approach in religious studies emphasizes a philosophical framework in investigating religious teachings. Philosophy continually raises questions that help maintain the relevance of religion, such as those concerning the existence of God, the nature of the human self and soul, as well as the purpose and ultimate end of human life. The philosophical approach in religious studies positions religion as an object of rational inquiry using philosophical tools, rather than as a branch of theology. It is characterized by being logical, metaphysical, comprehensive-ontological, epistemological, and ethical. Second, the presence of rational elements in philosophy makes a significant contribution to the development of the Islamic scholarly tradition. This approach has encouraged the formation of disciplines such as ‘ilm al-kalām (Islamic theology), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and tafsīr (Qur’anic exegesis). Third, this approach opens space for hermeneutical methods, which now play a crucial role in contemporary Qur’anic studies.

Before the digital age, religious authority came from formal institutions such as Islamic boarding schools and seminaries. The legitimacy of scholars and religious leaders is obtained through systematic education and affiliation with established institutions. However, social media has disrupted traditional religious authority. Platforms like YouTube and TikTok are becoming new spaces for religious content without institutional filters. The shift in religious authority has an impact on the authenticity of interpretation in digital content. This study aims to see how the dynamics of religious authority shift and how the challenges of interpretation authenticity in the digitalization era are as well as how to maintain the authenticity of interpretation in the digital era. The approach used is a qualitative approach with the Literature study method. The results obtained indicate that there is a shift in religious authority, from traditional to conventional. then there are three challenges to the authenticity of interpretation in digital content, namely: data validity and reliability of digital sources, content simplification, content manipulation and disinformation. And the efforts to maintain authenticity are Digital Education and Literacy, the Role of Ulema and Religious Institutions, Collaboration with Digital Platforms.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of al-hikmah in the Qur'an Surah An-Nahl [16]: 125 using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Al-hikmah is one of the important da'wah methods in Islam, especially to convey messages to scholars and the highly educated public. The purpose of this research is to explore the layers of the meaning of al-hikmah through the analysis of denotations, connotations, and myths according to Barthes' semiotic theory. The research method used is qualitative with a library research approach, collecting data from various literature of interpretation and Arabic dictionaries. The results of the study show that at the denotation stage, al-hikmah means wisdom. At the connotation stage, al-hikmah is interpreted as the ability of the preacher to invite to the way of Allah with true knowledge, conveyed meekly without violence and coercion. Meanwhile, at the mythical stage, al-hikmah reflects moral values and communication ethics that strengthen tolerance and mutual respect in society. This research contributes to understanding the importance of a wise approach in contemporary da'wah.

Abstract

This article examines the position of axiology within the philosophy of science as a normative foundation that guides the use of knowledge in the modern era, which is characterized by technological advancement and social complexity. Through a qualitative approach based on literature studies, this research explores how ethical, moral, and humanistic values are integrated into scientific practice to ensure that scientific development is not only objective but also socially responsible. The analysis indicates that modern scientific practice is never value-free; the selection of research topics, methods, and the application of scientific findings are consistently influenced by particular value orientations. The integration of values into science is essential to prevent the misuse of scientific knowledge, strengthen the responsibility of scientists, and promote innovations that prioritize human well-being. This article asserts that axiology must serve as a key pillar in the development and application of science so that scientific processes remain relevant, ethical, and positively contributive to modern life.

Abstract

This article examines a comparative analysis of civilizational cycle theories proposed by two prominent Islamic thinkers, Ibn Khaldun and Malik Bennabi. Ibn Khaldun adopts a sociological approach by emphasizing the concept of ‘asabiyyah (social solidarity) as the primary force in the formation and decline of civilizations. In contrast, Malik Bennabi highlights a psycho-religious approach by focusing on the role of ideas, creativity, and human spirit in determining the destiny of a civilization. This article aims to analyze the similarities and differences between their perspectives and to assess the relevance of their ideas in understanding the dynamics of modern civilization. The study employs a qualitative approach based on library research and applies a comparative analytical method to provide a clear philosophical examination of the civilizational cycle theories of Ibn Khaldun and Malik Bennabi. The findings indicate that the approaches of Ibn Khaldun and Malik Bennabi are complementary rather than independent and should be understood as operating simultaneously. While Ibn Khaldun emphasizes external and structural aspects, Malik Bennabi focuses on internal and spiritual dimensions. The integration of these two perspectives provides a solid theoretical foundation and serves as a source of inspiration for the development of a sustainable Islamic civilization.

Abstract

Pesantren, as indigenous Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, play a strategic role in character building, moral strengthening, and maintaining social stability. However, in the era of digital disruption, pesantren are vulnerable to hoaxes and misinformation that can negatively influence public perception. This study aims to map the typologies and motives of hoaxes targeting pesantren, analyze their impact on socio-religious image, and explore mitigation strategies through digital literacy grounded in Islamic values and community collaboration. The research employs a qualitative social approach using literature review, thematic analysis, and critical discourse analysis, with source triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings indicate that hoaxes targeting pesantren manifest in various forms: ideological-political, moral-social, economic-financial, and theological. The resulting impacts are multidimensional, including social stigmatization, psychological pressure on students and educators, political polarization, and threats to national stability. Mitigation efforts are carried out through digital literacy, media ethics, digital da'wah, and community collaboration. These findings underscore the importance of Islamic values-based digital literacy in building a healthy information ecosystem and strengthening socio-religious resilience.
